zheng··on Github: Major Service Outage
First off, as others have said, disabling port 80 is a great way to handle this, I don't really care that much if I can see/use github the website for a few hours, but I'd be much more upset if I couldn't pull my code.

Secondly, I kind of like when big sites go down when I'm not in desperate need because it means a really nice aftermath write up is on the way. Can't wait to hear more about this one.

zheng··on Git over FTP
I'm in need of this kind of project, but was looking at a python implementation[0]. Has anyone used either one, and any pointers either way?

zheng··on Git over FTP
Honestly, why post a comment at all?
zheng··on Is lightspeed really a limit? Solving super-luminal Special Relativity
Except that the heliocentric model greatly simplified calculations. Take a look at Ptolemy's (and others) many epicycle model for something super complex and still not very accurate.
zheng··on NASA: Mars rover Curiosity finds bright object
So the picture doesn't really make it obvious, but I believe they are talking about the item emphasized here[0]. I might just be dense, but why would NASA think that is a part of the rover, it really doesn't seem like it to me. As an aside, it also doesn't seem particularly "bright".

zheng··on Coursera's Functional Programming - Cheating Discovered
The point is that Coursera eventually does want their classes to be resume busters
zheng··on Facebook's Release Engineer
> I've long thought Facebook could do with a "dislike" button for everyone. Keep it private...

Well, we all know why this wouldn't ever see the light of day /snark

Facebook would do well to implement something like this, but it would never be private, at least to advertisers. Maybe from other people, but that takes more work then just making it visible.

zheng··on What Happened to the Facebook Killer? It's Complicated
It's generally so that the person in question knows they've been hellbanned, as it can be difficult to tell if you have been without someone mentioning it.
zheng··on Zurb Foundation vs. Twitter Bootstrap
Others have mentioned it, but for those looking for much less than Bootstrap/Foundation offer, there is always skeleton[0], which is a very lightweight grid and only a little more. There is also a SASS port[1], or my fork[2] which handles more like the original Skeleton.

zheng··on Filepicker.io's "Don't write off HTML5" contest
I think they mean that you can design your application to be used on a mobile phone as long as it runs in the browser, not directly on the phone.
zheng··on The Pull Request for Designers
CubicleNinjas, your post is dead, but you seem to offer some good feedback for the Layervault team. Just a heads up that you might want to create a new account and repost.
zheng··on Freelancers: High quality projects. Prompt payment.
That's a fair point, but when you say that you want nothing to do with a company because they use a billing model that you don't like, it sounds bad.
zheng··on Freelancers: High quality projects. Prompt payment.
Right, because a middleman that finds work for you and handles making sure you get paid, taking your potentially risky freelance business and making it slightly more like a stable job deserves exactly zero of your precious money. I don't understand people sometimes.
zheng··on Keccak wins the SHA-3 competition
Let's say I know a little bit about crypto in general, and wanted to write a software implementation of Keccak/SHA-3 as an academic endeavor. How hard would it be? I'm not looking to produce something that will be certifiably secure against side channel attacks, just something that is reasonably performant and can produce the correct results.
zheng··on Why I think Rust is the "language of the future" for systems programming
Does Go not have higher order functions and pattern matching? If not, are they on the roadmap?
zheng··on California launches online voter registration
I would almost certainly trust UDP more to actually deliver my ballot, forgetting things like security, etc.
zheng··on Slashdot and SourceForge sold to Dice Holdings
I have very little perspective here, but this seems like a low price for /. and SourceForge ($20M). The article states that last year alone the two sites brought in that much revenue, but I'd assume they weren't bought if the purchaser didn't think there was growth potential.
zheng··on Editing text is the opposite of handling exceptions
Really interesting application of category theory, I'd love to see a nonlinear editor with a good UI. Don't know if the general public would bite, but I think there could be a niche market there.

As an aside, thanks @ColinWright for another high quality submission. HN needs more of these kinds of articles.

zheng··on Yahoo Removes Registered Trademark (R) From Logo
It might just be me, but the (R) is practically invisible when looking at the logo on the whole. The TM is much more obnoxious, but I can see why they might be hesitant to use four rectangles askew without it.
zheng··on Plan 9 from Bell Labs (1995)
Ok, first question, why aren't we all using Plan 9 instead of a linux-based OS? Maybe more importantly, what could the next upstart kernel/OS do different than Plan 9 if it wants to be more successful?
zheng··on '; CREATE TABLE `Capture the Flag`; -- Stripe CTF Web Edition coming next week'
So what are the chances of someone who's never really dealt with web security capturing the flag? Last year's results don't make it seem too promising, 12k unique IP's -> 250 captures.
zheng··on 256 CSS Classes Can Override an #id
This seems to be taken from this answer on a question about HTML/CSS specificity

zheng··on Fly to 6 Continents in Style
Would love to read a bit more about your experiences, that sounds like a ton of fun! Consider this a request for a blog post.
zheng··on MySQL vs PostgreSQL
Slightly OT, but I'm going to reiterate a comment from the older submission, this is one of the best written comparisons of two similar technologies I've ever read. Generally you either get one-sided pieces or supposed "fair fight" pieces which slant the view towards whatever the author has chosen as the better solution for them. Those can be helpful, but something divorced from justifying a decision like this is amazing. So thanks to the writer(s)!
zheng··on Google Maps now has schedules for 1 million public transit stops
I wouldn't say schedules are useless, they are actually pretty helpful to humans (e.g. the bus is scheduled for 5:13, but in rush hour that means it will probably be there closer to 5:20). Tracking is clearly more helpful if available, however.

As an aside, thanks to the GP for showing me OneBusAway, it's exactly what I've been looking for!

zheng··on Anic - Faster than C, Safer than Java, Simpler than *sh
At first I thought this was a joke due to some of the copy, but after reading through the tutorial a bit, it seems pretty interesting. Less hyperbole would be nice though. From the FAQ, ANI (the language, anic is the reference compiler) is faster than C because it is automatically parallel code. Not exactly what I think of when someone says "faster than C".

Nevertheless, for a modern take on a dataflow language, ANI is intriguing. If nothing else, the paradigm is probably different enough from imperative/OOP/functional that it is worthwhile to learn even if ANI doesn't take off.

zheng··on Javascript Fundamentals: Development for Absolute Beginners
I only looked at the first couple episodes, but be warned that this is javascript for the absolute beginning developer. They are really slow-paced if you have ever done any coding before.

Not to knock the videos, if you are in the target audience, they are really good, and fill in a lot of gaps that other tutorials may not. Things like "Wait, why am I saving this file like that?" or "What is a DOM?"

zheng··on My biggest problem with Vim
ehsanu1, your comment is dead, don't see any reason for it.
zheng··on Blizzard Network Breached; Change Your Battle.Net Passwords
Blizzard operates in a free market. Average consumers don't care that much about security until something happens, then they forget. Therefore, security isn't a priority to Blizzard. It is really as simple as that.
zheng··on Show HN: Sell your stuff for more money with less hassle
Sounds like what I would have done if I was trying to overthrow CL (http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4324452). Great idea, I look forward to using Bidkat in the future.
