zests··on The U.S. Air Force just admitted the F-35 stealth fighter has failed
Where's the quote from the Air Force saying the F-35 failed? There is none. As far as I can tell this article is just misrepresenting a quote to push a narrative.
zests··on Letters from House members to cable providers [pdf]
You can compare yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theatre to a lot of speech, for example, speech that is against a military draft. This was the original comparison.

Luckily we (the United States) prevent our government from restricting this type of speech.

zests··on We haven’t seen a quarter of known bee species since the 1990s
As soon as the "ecological collapse" stops, extensive speciation will occur. Nature always wins. There's a lot to be hopeful about even when it seems like there might not be.
zests··on YouTube blocked chess channel after mistaken detection of racial slurs
Chess24 has the highest level of commentary by far but chess.com can come close. Also, Peter Svidler is on the roof.
zests··on YouTube blocked chess channel after mistaken detection of racial slurs
Chess commentators might use various phrases that sound $COLOR-supremacist at different rates like "$COLOR is better" or "I prefer $COLOR".

Thank you
zests··on 'New car smell' is the scent of carcinogens
California "may cause cancer warnings" may cause people to ignore "may cause cancer warnings". Is this coffee carcinogenic or cigarette carcinogenic?
zests··on “User Engagement” Is Code for “Addiction”
Here is a rough ranking of information sources by amount of "user engagement".

Books < TV < Video Games <= Social Media

The rankings are potentially different per individual and each information source effects people in different ways. This is my mental model of different user engagement sources. The hard part is where to draw the line and the inevitable fact that pandora is already out of the box.

zests··on How They SRE
What's it like being an SRE for a FAANG? To me it sounds like you need to know practically everything about software engineering (network stack, linux stack, web app stack) so it appeals to me as a generalist.
zests··on Bill Gates Has a Master Plan for Battling Climate Change
The carbon that makes up the cardboard was carbon that was once in the environment. I’d rather landfill it and remove it from the carbon cycle than spend resources attempting to reuse it.
zests··on Alternative Shells
And the cost has to fit in to your budget. I'd rather spend my budget on learning emacs, for example, instead of spending it switching to a new shell.
zests··on Alternative Shells
How often do you find yourself forced to use bash? ssh/machine init scripts/etc. I could never use an alternative shell full time because I need to stay good at bash.
zests··on Quest for Hollywood fame splits Redditors at heart of market frenzy
The parts of wall street that lost were part of the 1%. The part of wall street that won were the funds that managed teachers' retirement accounts.

This is the narrative. It doesn't matter which narrative makes the most sense or is the most correct, it only matters which narrative spreads the most and the quickest. The narrative that wins will always be the victory narrative.

zests··on Illegal CFC emissions have stopped since scientists raised alarm
I object to this slavery analogy entirely. I do not believe it is appropriate.
zests··on Illegal CFC emissions have stopped since scientists raised alarm
Brazil, Indonesia and other countries with similar levels of development are simply "late to the game" in regards to environmental destruction. Countries that developed sooner destroyed their own environments before there was scrutiny.

If western countries want to stop developing countries from using their own resources, some financial compensation should be involved.

zests··on SDL Moves to GitHub
I do this using magit. I’ve never split a commit directly (I’m sure its possible) but manipulate commits at the file/hunk/line granularity which I did not think was possible with git.

Same with histedit, that’s in magit as well.

zests··on AI maths whiz creates tough new problems for humans to solve
Sometimes popular science is itself the misinformation. The authors stretch the findings to land in prestigious journals. The news stretches the findings further to sell clicks (c.f. Gell-Mann Amnesia effect). The people on the internet selectively quote articles and selectively ignore others. The algorithm tries to only show you content that you like.

The truth doesn't have a chance.

zests··on Making Vaccine
I have no doubts about the safety of vaccines in healthy people. I have some harmless curiosity about people who are not known to be healthy. How do you actually determine if someone is "too immunocompromised" for a vaccine?

This must be a question with no good answer.

Can you provide more information about how vaccines can cause damage?
zests··on Homebrew 3.0
I've never used MacPorts. Go figure, I just realized that "MacPorts" means "bsd ports for mac". I'll have to try it sometime and see if I prefer the look and feel of MacPorts.
zests··on Homebrew 3.0
It's a shame that the windows experience is so poor that it negates any positives introduced by the developer experience improvements.
zests··on Homebrew 3.0

zests··on McKinsey to pay $573M to settle claims over opioid crisis role: source
I am unconvinced that any mandatory training is useful (ignoring the fact that the act of implementing the training itself is useful to the people who implement the training.)
zests··on The divide between political parties is smaller than we think (2020)
That's quite the stretch. We can lawyer our way out of anything if we try hard enough.
