zests··on US agencies call for pause in Johnson & Johnson vaccine
Whether or not this is true, that is not what the messaging is.
zests··on Illegal Prime Numbers
There is no question that the person creating and publishing the prime is infringing copyright. However, they aren't the ones actually publishing the information. The copyright infringer creates the prime, proves something interesting about it and then the fan websites (like PrimePages mentioned in the articles) actually distribute the primes.
zests··on Anxiety is in your body, not your mind
I've realized a lot of the same things. My understanding now is that it is the physical feelings themselves that are the stress. Managing stress is about learning to identify it and then learning how to best take care of it (which you can only do when you are first aware of the stress and the toll it is having on you.)
zests··on Amazon workers vote against unionizing in Alabama
People aren't voting against the dues, they are voting against the union.

zests··on Gallup: U.S. church membership dips below 50% for first time
I read a book by Eckhart Tolle that gave me two takeaways. The first was that the book was full of nonsense. The second was that it was clear why this nonsense was so effective for people.

What are the downsides to suspending scientific accuracy for the purposes of doing Aikido?

zests··on Ask HN: Digital Nomads: What's Your Setup?
How hard is it to work internationally like that? I'd imagine its especially challenging to hop between countries unless you work for yourself.
zests··on Closing web browser windows doesn't close connections
What's the deal with service workers? I read up on them and do not see how they keep connections open when the page is closed.
zests··on Vim-gh-line: Vim plugin to open the current line on GitHub
I don't get the appeal of vim over vim emulators. I've always used essentially stock vim with no plugins so I find myself using JetBrains emulated vim. A language server has become necessary for me. If vim LSP competes with JetBrains LSP, I'd make the switch. I have never tried but if I was taking bets I'd bet on JetBrains for what I assume are obvious reasons.
zests··on Matrix multiplication inches closer to mythic goal
The problem is that each algorithm likely has a constant factor much larger than the previous. This does not matter for the runtime complexity of any individual algorithm but when you string them together the time complexity explodes.
zests··on Suez canal blocked by a massive ship
This link is extremely interesting. Keep zooming out all the way if you haven't already.
zests··on Matrix multiplication inches closer to mythic goal
This is what I choose to believe. Even if it is not true I will still believe it because it is so satisfying.
zests··on My survey article on P vs. NP (2017)
Even knowing a polynomial algorithm for SAT would not have practical implications unless the algorithm has a reasonable run time. Matrix multiplication is a great example of a problem where the best known runtime complexity algorithms are not used even though for matrixes the size of the universe they would be faster.
zests··on My survey article on P vs. NP (2017)
Even proving P=NP would not necessarily have any practical applications. Practicality is typically not a concern in complexity theory. Even some problems that have been shown to be in P are still usually solved with non-polynomial algorithms (Linear Programming).
zests··on MacBook Owners' Butterfly Keyboard Lawsuit Gets Class Action Certification
GNU Readline has destroyed my ability to work on non-readline editors. It's worse when I am using a machine where caps lock means caps lock. I have it bound to control (on hold) and escape (on tap). When I typo on a different machine and reflexively type ^A^K to kill the line, it comes out as capital "AK" instead. Repeat multiple times.

My MBP has a tactile escape key. A much needed improvement over the full touch bar.
zests··on Setting Up Arch Linux with KDE Plasma in Windows Subsystem for Linux 2
Apple wins in the hardware department by far. Even before M1. If this targets anyone it targets developers who play video games.
zests··on Red seaweed supplementation reduces enteric methane by over 80% in beef steers
There may be no incentive for the farmer but plenty of incentive for the scientist, the government and the philanthropist.

My conclusions is that GHG from cattle is simply not as big of a deal as the environmentalists would make it seem. Another comment mentions that decaying grass also releases methane so I'm not even sure if there are any accurate numbers on the true effect of livestock on emissions.

zests··on Red seaweed supplementation reduces enteric methane by over 80% in beef steers
I find this hard to believe. Here is my epistemic estimation: if this were legitimate, it would be huge news. I've been hearing about this for several years now but somehow it never amounts to anything. I would have expected large scale cattle studies by now but I have not seen any of those.
zests··on How to deal with difficult people on software projects
This website led me to a bit of self reflection, I enjoyed figuring out which categories I could place myself in.
zests··on Do not use redirection characters in your shell prompt
If you hit Control-X-E it will open whatever is set as $EDITOR in a temporary session you can paste your command in to. I'd recommend vim. You can even use vim to edit your command. Once you save and quit your command will be run.

The article mentions this but not the ^X^E shortcut.

zests··on YouTube tells foreign creators they will soon be charged American tax
Is this a new rule? I can't find anywhere that actually links or describes any new regulations but I am trying to figure out why this is just happening now.
zests··on Bill Gates Says that Bitcoin is bad For the Planet
In your example, you are giving concrete numbers. Concrete numbers are extremely useful. If you make a comparison without concrete numbers, it can often be misleading. It goes without saying that concrete numbers can be misleading on their own. It can be quite difficult to nail down rules for honest communication.
zests··on Bill Gates Says that Bitcoin is bad For the Planet
In the past few hundred years, technological progress has been anti-correlated with environmental health. We live in an age with the most prosperity and luxury but also the most pollution. Bitcoin is no different.

As bitcoin has descended into a new culture war, I'll mention that I believe decentralized payment systems are a huge step in the right direction, but I'll also mention that I do not think this comment should be used as part of the bitcoin crusades. Take it on my word that my opinion is nuanced and that I don't own any cryptocurrencies.

This article is a culture war article itself that does not say anything appreciably new. My opinion is that once everyone knows what side of the culture war they are on, discussion about the topic becomes meaningless.

zests··on Bill Gates Says that Bitcoin is bad For the Planet
Electricity per transaction is an extremely poor way to communicate anything useful. It says nothing about the actual harm of Bitcoin and only leaves readers (and bloggers) drawing their own conclusions.
zests··on Conversations almost never end when both parties want them to: study
Ask HN: how old were you when you started noticing this? It took me far too long to develop meta-conversational awareness. I must have been in my 20s before I picked up on it.

It feels like a superpower in some ways.

zests··on Beyond Meat signs global supply deals with McDonald’s, KFC and Pizza Hut
Do you find it strange that an article about methane does not mention what percentage of the greenhouse gas effect that methane accounts for? I'd ask everyone to read this article, write down what percentage you think methane accounts for and then read the wikipedia page on greenhouse gasses.

This is to say nothing other than that more nuance is needed when discussing the environment. It is important to reduce our emissions.

zests··on Beyond Meat signs global supply deals with McDonald’s, KFC and Pizza Hut
Think about it. Cows release carbon based green house gasses. Where does that carbon originally come from? Plants absorbing carbon based green house gasses. I'm not saying that they cancel out, but there must be some consumption of carbon from the atmosphere in order for cows to produce carbon.

If you're an environmentalist trying to convince people to support your cause, you aren't going to talk about the carbon that raising cows removes from the air. You're only going to mention the carbon that gets put back in the atmosphere. That way, the problem seems like a bigger deal. This is not a slight on environmentalists -- its just politics.
