zeroCalories··on Jeff – Jev-compatible 0.8B decision models, trained at home, ~30 ms
I've always been more afraid of these types of models than LLMs. These are what enable mass surveillance at scale and autonomous real time combat drones. Now they are spreading and being optimized. Gg.
zeroCalories··on GPT-6 Astra
Can it? Last I checked, all my free software operating systems and browsers were still hacked together trash. I can't wait for AI to actually be good so I can spam a bunch of AGPL code with it.
zeroCalories··on If You Build It, They Will Come
The stigma is pure cope. Most nerdy types I know wasted a ton of time on some stupid hobby. If not video games, it was some other dumb geek thing like anime, comic books, or furries.
zeroCalories··on If You Build It, They Will Come
That's the cost of doing business. Luckily, you can't go bankrupt from hurt feelings....
zeroCalories··on Goodbye, and Thanks for All the Bikesheds
Lol this feels trite to say, but tech bros are not ideologically homogenous. You and the author are mixing up different people commonly identified as tech bros.
zeroCalories··on Young adults are poor despite every metric which suggests otherwise
These are not mere personal goals, they provide value back to society, which in turn helps others to achieve these goals. That's why we are concerned with them. We have a generation of leeches and losers that are only concerned with maximizing their consumption, not leaving behind a legacy.

zeroCalories··on Ask HN: How do you effectively communicate or present?
I'm a horrible communicator, but these are some tips that have helped me:

1. Give the conclusion first, ramble the details after so people don't get lost.

2. Only share something if it impacts decision making, otherwise it's just noise.

3. Prefer arguments based on facts, because "I don't like it" is too vague for others to make decisions on.

zeroCalories··on Bun has been converted to rust. Now what?
Then you would expect to see several related CVEs and outages related to this? How many? Would you be willing to bet on it?
zeroCalories··on Bun has been converted to rust. Now what?
To be fair, who cares about ai slop websites? To be honest, they're often better than the average webdev garbage. Language runtimes are held to a much, much, higher standard.
zeroCalories··on Bun Has Been Converted to Rust. Now What?
I would trust a zig -> rust translation far less if it didn't make liberal use of unsafe, because that implies an order of magnitude more aggressive refactoring
zeroCalories··on Bun Has Been Converted to Rust. Now What?
Depends on who vibe codes it. At the end of the day the Bun developers are the ones responsible for the quality of their software. If they've reviewed the code closely, tested it, and eat their own dog food, then I don't see why I should treat it any different from any other untrusted 3p dependency.

IMO, the main problem with vibe coding is that it empowers reckless behavior at companies like Microsoft, and that people with no serious investment in outcomes are empowered to make things. Does that apply to Anthropic? The Bun team? It's not 100% clear yet.

zeroCalories··on Mythos Finds a Curl Vulnerability
Sometimes you gotta let people know how awesome you are. The real question is if you're misrepresenting yourself(all marketing, no substance).
zeroCalories··on Over 97% of the 'Linux' Foundation's Budget Goes Not to Linux
What you mean is that you can't have everything you want on minimum wage
zeroCalories··on Over 97% of the 'Linux' Foundation's Budget Goes Not to Linux
Maybe you need to watch more Clavicular streams
zeroCalories··on Over 97% of the 'Linux' Foundation's Budget Goes Not to Linux
No one really "needs" anything. You can live perfectly well on minimum wage. But really, you could survive perfectly well as a slave. Infact, the world is content for you to die and get nothing. All "need" is "want". All you deserve is what you have leverage for.

zeroCalories··on Banned by Anthropic
After getting to the point where vibe coded slop is getting pushed to production it's not clear to me if a future where AI can replace me is a worse future than we have now.
zeroCalories··on The buns in McDonald's Japan's burger photos are all slightly askew
Yeah just say horse radish geeze
zeroCalories··on Ask HN: Are your product managers sending PRs?
I told my PM they can send me PRs if I can send them PRs for review.
zeroCalories··on Anthropic silently downgraded cache TTL from 1h → 5M on March 6th
Several thoughts went through my head before I realized what's wrong:

1. I guess longer caching means more stale data, which is why it's a downgrade? 2. Maybe this isn't the TTL I thought it was? 3. Maybe this isn't the cache I thought?

Then I clicked on the link and realized I had been mislead my the title.

zeroCalories··on Why Switzerland has 25 Gbit internet and America doesn't
If you could find people to do this work below market rate this wouldn't be a problem to begin with.
zeroCalories··on My university uses prompt injection to catch cheaters
I also struggled with exams, but that's because my understanding was often shallow, due to a lack of effort to study and understand the material. I'm very suspicious of people that say they're smart, but can't perform on exams. That said, there's plenty of ways to structure things to avoid this. Have weekly, easy, pass / fail exams that ensure you've read the material at a basic level, or understood some basic concepts. Lab work. Presentations with live grilling from the professor to ensure you understand the topic.
zeroCalories··on Why Switzerland has 25 Gbit internet and America doesn't
I have a lot of ability. I'm not gonna flex it for others without pay that gives me significantly higher living standards than the average person. Are you going to force me to work?
zeroCalories··on Why Switzerland has 25 Gbit internet and America doesn't
Then as the local government, maybe start by removing that regulation. Or if the regulation is required, you're going to have to pay a premium for people willing and able to put up with it.
zeroCalories··on Why Switzerland has 25 Gbit internet and America doesn't
Depends on how much margin there was. Sounds like there's not enough.
zeroCalories··on My university uses prompt injection to catch cheaters
Better than "how to get a passing grade in cs/swe"
zeroCalories··on My university uses prompt injection to catch cheaters
It's pointless. Just an arms race of gimmicks. There's really no option besides making homework all optional, and putting 100% of the grade into in-person exams. I basically don't trust that any new graduate has earned their degree, and won't until schools do what's necessary to crush cheaters.
zeroCalories··on The Hateful Eight is 85% of S&P 500 Decline
It's actually easy. Just sell and invest somewhere else.
zeroCalories··on The Hateful Eight is 85% of S&P 500 Decline
Silly. You should be selling off th ese trash stocks. Don't know why people keep recommending market cap weighted funds when they're being manipulated by scam artists like Elon and Trump into making the world's retirement funds into bag holders.
