zephyrfalcon··on Why has Plan 9 chosen statically linked binaries instead of dynamic ones? (2004)
Granted there isn't much to be gained by making your code look like an angry fruit salad. But I do find it useful in some cases, e.g. to make comments stand out from the rest of the code. Also, unterminated block comments or strings will immediately show up as well. And if you are not very familiar with a language, it might help to highlight keywords, so you don't accidentally use them as variable names.
zephyrfalcon··on In France, Comic Books Are Serious Business
It seems so. On Amazon I found Yoko Tsuno, Gomer Goof (English name of Gaston Lagaffe), Spirou & Fantasio, Valerian and Laureline. Personally I would like to add recommendations for stuff like Lucky Luke, Ekho and Blacksad.

Location: Gainesville, FL

Remote: yes

Willing to relocate: sort of; I am willing to relocate to certain areas, esp. Jacksonville Beach or similar, provided some form of relocation assistance is available... Other areas in the US are currently not an option.

Technologies: Python, relational databases (MS SQL Server, Postgres, MySQL), web crawling, GUI development, scripting, automated testing, SQLAlchemy, web development (esp. Flask), ETL, REST APIs, parsing. Web development: mostly React. Languages: Python of course, Scheme, Prolog, Lisp. I have some familiarity with many other languages, like C, C#, Ruby, OCaml, Elixir, Clojure, Haskell, etc, and in most cases I can probably quickly become productive in them, if you have an existing projects in one of these languages. (I am always eager to pick up new programming languages or technologies.)

zephyrfalcon··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (January 2019)
SEEKING WORK | Gainesville, FL | remote/freelance

I am looking for full-time or part-time work, either one is fine. If you are looking to get a small project done, or you have an existing project where some maintenance work needs to be done (perhaps on a regular basis), then I would love to hear from you.

I am a very experienced Python developer, having used the language in all kinds of areas and situations, including web development (Flask, Django, Pylons, Google App Engine, etc), desktop GUI development, database access (MS SQL Server, MySQL, and Postgres), ORMs, REST APIs, scripting, backend development, automated testing, web crawling/scraping, data extraction and parsing/ETL, parsing, language implementation, games, etc.

I have a lot of experience with relational databases and SQL as well, especially MS SQL Server and Postgres. In fact, in all of my previous jobs I have used SQL, including designed database schemas, writing queries, measuring performance and optimizing queries, writing views and stored procedures, etc.

I am also available for technical writing (I kept a programming blog for many years, mostly about Python), and for front-end development using React.

(For the record: Although Python is my main programming language, I am also interested in, and have worked with, many other programming languages, including C, D, Delphi, Go, C#/Mono, Ruby, OCaml, Prolog, Lisp, Scheme, etc, on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux systems. I am also available to work on projects in these languages.)

zephyrfalcon··on The fate of reduce() in Python 3000 (2005)
It appears to work without list comprehensions as well:

    Python 3.7.1 (default, Nov  6 2018, 18:49:54)
    Type 'copyright', 'credits' or 'license' for more information
    IPython 7.1.1 -- An enhanced Interactive Python. Type '?' for help.

    In [1]: lookup = {}

    In [2]: a, lookup[a] = 'xy'

    In [3]: a
    Out[3]: 'x'

    In [4]: lookup
    Out[4]: {'x': 'y'}
I wasn't previously aware that this was possible, but I guess it's no different from

    a = 'x'
    lookup[a] = 'y'  # i.e. lookup['x'] = y

zephyrfalcon··on Show HN: Analysis of 2018 Hacker News “Who Is Hiring” Job Posts
When you look at the job postings in your browser, and do a simple string search for ".net" (so not a regex search), it doesn't show up all that often. E.g. if I look at this month's posts (4 pages), I see it 31 times. By contrast, Python shows up 251 times. I suspect the posts were searched with a regex like /.net/i without escaping the ".".

This line alone tells me I'm going to have infinite recursion. That would be a problem in any language, of course, and isn't particularly hard to spot here.

zephyrfalcon··on Prolog Under the Hood: An Honest Look (1992)
If "some shifty person introduces a problem", then that's bad news for any code base in any language. Nothing specific to Prolog.

By that reasoning, software written in Javascript must be extremely reliable and easy to debug. >.>

zephyrfalcon··on The Birth of Prolog (1992) [pdf]
It did... it was compiled, and had some of the standard stuff that came with Borland's other Turbo* languages (like screen manipulation routines). Which came with a price... Turbo Prolog code is pretty much incompatible with any other Prolog version due to its use of static typing and Pascal-ish declaration sections for domains, predicates, clauses and goals.

For those who are interested, I think old manuals (and software) can be found on archive.org.

zephyrfalcon··on Show HN: An Easy Programming Language That Runs in the Browser
A few things come to mind... Installing it. Setting up a project. Learning the whole language. Reading other people's code. Understanding how things work behind the scenes. Less surprising code, in the sense that it does what you expect.

I would add, "finding a third-part library", but that was mostly because there were not as many. :) Then again the current glut of libraries is a bit of mixed blessing. I can look for a library that does X and find dozens of them. Very few of them will be mature or do what I want. But that has more to do with the ecosystem than with Python-the-language.

zephyrfalcon··on Show HN: An Easy Programming Language That Runs in the Browser
I don't think the number of tutorials matters, otherwise Haskell monads would be super easy to learn. ;-)

Python circa 2000 was a language that was easy to learn. [1] What you saw was basically what you got. Python in 2018... well... it has grown lots more features, which might not show up in tutorials but a beginner will see them as soon as they look at actual code. List comprehensions, generators, context managers, metaclasses, async/await, decorators, 2/3 split, ABCs, etc. Useful? Yes. Easy to learn or understand for a newbie? Maybe not so much.

Never mind that setting up an environment is no longer as easy as creating a 'lib' directory somewhere in $PYTHONPATH and unzipping files in there. Now we have many package managers, virtual environments, competing Python versions, you name it. Back in the day I started a Python "project" with a single file and worked from there, growing as necessary. Nowadays I see new projects with a dozen files and directories. Again, there are (presumably) reasons for all this, but easier it certainly is not.
