zenocon··on New dev release of Sublime Text 3
I'm wondering if the release of atom.io started a fire...nothing like a healthy dose of competition?

zenocon··on Amazon Snags Older HBO Shows For Web Streaming
The Amazon Prime, Netflix apps are front-and-center on the Xbox and PS3 console dashboards. One click install, enter username / password, and you have a very easy to use navigation / search for instantly streaming anything. If you own one of these devices (a lot of people do), it is a pretty easy experience.

The problem I have with devices from Apple, Google, Amazon are that they limit them to make their own content front and center, and often they won't even allow sources outside their own. With a console, I can stream from Hulu, AMZN, Netflix, or a PC in the office. Plus if you add a DLNA server like http://playon.tv, you add hundreds of other sources.

zenocon··on [dead]
I give? On Mavericks, it just emits the sentence using TTS. Why is it interesting?
zenocon··on My Quest to Build the Ultimate Music Player
J. River Media Center is a fantastic media player for Windows. Recently they have ported it to Mac [2] and an early port is available for Linux. The Mac port was still a little buggy last I tried, but a quick scan of the absolute features identified in the OP blog seem to be covered. I use it on Windows as a Media Center to serve audio/video/pics to all the devices in my home via DLNA.

zenocon··on The Disruption of Cable Television Has Arrived
Really...there are hundreds of apps for those as well. I'd think weather and news would be the last thing you'd look to basic cable for. As a cord cutter for several years now, the only rationale I can find for continuing the Comcast train is sports. Movies are passe on live cable (want some movie with those commercials?) High-demand TV series are another, but many of them show up via on-demand services not long after broadcast (w/o commercials) -- or can be had by "other" means.

The cable + sports networks have people in a headlock, though. Want to sign up for Big 10 football? You must have Comcast. A lot of other sports networks are similar. The minute sports goes to an a la carte or subscription model that doesn't require a cable package, I think it will signal the death knell for big cable.

zenocon··on Veterans theory on missing MH370 goes viral

zenocon··on Show HN: My Desk Chair
My eyes aren't good enough to sit that far away from the monitor. I had back pain, and other aches too -- then I decided to just get in shape. I do high intensity circuit training (mix of cardio / strength) 3x a week, and all my physical problems disappeared. I've never felt better.

I often sit at my desk exactly how you are not supposed to: slouched with feet up on the desk...but b/c my core is strong, it doesn't ever phase me. I think most people will find if they just get in shape, a lot of these desk fads will just go away for them.

zenocon··on Squirt.io – Readability Meets Spritz Speed Reading
I'm not able to get the bookmarklet running in Chrome http://i.imgur.com/4osL2Bp.png -- albeit I do have a number of extensions running that mainly block lots of stuff, so I suspect one of them is the culprit.

> Trader Joe’s received higher overall quality ratings than Dominick’s and Jewel-Osco, and charges similar prices.

I could go on, but I guess you can do your own research. Seriously, their prices are on average, lower than most.

zenocon··on 'Secret agents' warning removed from Chrome incognito tab
I bet the folks over at https://groups.google.com/a/chromium.org/forum/#!forum/chrom... must get a good chuckle out the hysteria swarming over this

why can't we re-direct some of the trillions we spend on war and defense toward cancer research. seriously.
zenocon··on Honest Android Games
great idea, looks nice; consider adding a faceted search, or just general category filtering.
zenocon··on Mystery signal from a helicopter
This was a fascinating talk. Thanks for sharing it.
zenocon··on Mystery signal from a helicopter
This is the kind of article that makes HN worth coming back for.
zenocon··on Machine Learning in JavaScript
Article looks really good! Look forward to longer read tonight. Minor nit: I'd stick with idiomatic JS style/formatting. Looks like you mixed in styles from some of the other languages (tab indentation, braces, etc.) This is always a religious argument, but I write a lot of different languages, and always just try to stick with the most popular idiomatic way, regardless of whether I care for it or not.
zenocon··on Climbi
temp pastebin that removes code after 30 days -- looks nice.

zenocon··on How to Swap Out a Time Warner Modem With Your Own Faster One
So glad to hear this can also be done with Comcast. The better half pays the bills and I wasn't paying attention. I had no idea they were raping me for $8/mo for a cable modem. Turns out I have an Arris TM822 -- which doesn't look too bad, and is DOCSIS 3 capable. Another comment in here mentioned that the easiest thing to do is call and tell them you no longer want to rent the equipment, and then when you don't return it, they'll charge you $53 to own it. Sounds like a plan.
zenocon··on How to Swap Out a Time Warner Modem With Your Own Faster One
Did you do that, and were you able to get it re-activated... or did they not disconnect, but just charged you the $53 ?
zenocon··on Bitcoin and positive vs. normative economics
Placing a ceiling on the value of gold is mining technology, and the prospect that if its price gets out of whack for long on the upside a great deal more of it will be created. Placing a ceiling on the value of the dollar is the Federal Reserve’s role as actual dollar source, and its commitment not to allow deflation to happen.

Placing a ceiling on the value of bitcoins is computer technology and the form of the hash function… until the limit of 21 million bitcoins is reached. Placing a floor on the value of bitcoins is… what, exactly?

Where's the floor on the value of the dollar?

zenocon··on Inside Nick Denton's phony, hypocritical class war against tech workers
I don't consider it censorship. I view it as curated content, which is what I strongly desire. Censorship would mean you or I couldn't get access to valleywag to see what it has to say. That clearly is not the case.
zenocon··on Inside Nick Denton's phony, hypocritical class war against tech workers
> incredibly glad that HN auto-kills Valleywag links.

+1

zenocon··on Docker will change everything
VMWare has had a similar concept called ThinApp for Windows http://www.vmware.com/products/thinapp/ -- albeit it is more geared towards desktop apps as opposed to server apps, but similar concept.

If I recall it was an acquisition for them 4-5 years ago.

zenocon··on Reform Government Surveillance
“Reports about government surveillance have shown there is a real need for greater disclosure and new limits on how governments collect information. The US government should take this opportunity to lead this reform effort and make things right.” —Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, Facebook
zenocon··on An open letter from Carl Bernstein to Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger
Well trolled...time to move on.
zenocon··on How to Buy Bitcoin
Mining bitcoin isn't worth it and has not been for quite some time (from a newbie perspective looking to jump in.) I did some Litecoin mining about 6 mos ago, and experimented with: a) firing up EC2 clusters with MIT StarCluster http://star.mit.edu/cluster/ (which is awesome for other reasons) b) buying my own rigs with expensive, high-end AMD GPUs. It was worth it for a while. I also pre-ordered some Butterfly Labs HW, but bailed on it when they couldn't produce a timely delivery.

tl;dr: it is fun for dorks like us, but at this point, don't expect to build your retirement nest egg mining -- just buying coins on an exchange is going to have a much better chance at ROI.

zenocon··on ZeroMQ is just sockets
I don't find it that disingenuous. I recently used 0MQ on a project, and quite frankly it would have taken a lot more code to do what 0MQ provided out of the box.

0MQ implementation is built on Sockets. I can build the same features on top of Sockets, but why would I want to if it works well?

Side note: I'm interested in looking deeper in to nanomsg http://nanomsg.org/index.html -- which is a re-write of 0MQ by the original author.

zenocon··on Google says it is working on automatically updating Android’s WebView
Just a plug for my little side project: https://github.com/davisford/android-chromium if you need to do this now and don't want to wait... it can be done.
zenocon··on It’s time for Silicon Valley to ask: Is it worth it?
If the govt. will spend $600M+ on the steaming pile of dog poo that is healthcare.gov, I am sure they are successful in finding able-bodied hackers worth their salt that can build data mining infrastructure and router firmware hacks that lead to this mess we are in.
