zen_1··on Yubikey Authenticator
To avoid this 2:n issue, I make 2 yubikeys that are clones of each other, and leave one in a secure location at all times. The sites cant tell the difference apart from serial number
zen_1··on Bankman-Fried used $100M in stolen FTX funds for political donations, US says

I'm arguing based on reasoning, not authority. Are you a satire account by any chance?
zen_1··on I would rather see my books get pirated than this
I am morally opposed to most IP laws and believe they are categorically illegitimate.

One of the few sentences more depressing (when relevant) than "Stallman was right" is "Ted Kaczynski had a point".

zen_1··on A brief glimpse at recent events in Egypt
This is significant because historically the most common way for men to avoid conscription was to emigrate for school/work and just not come back until they'd acquired dual citizenship (which usually* exempts you from conscription).

A nice side effect of this is a pretty significant brain drain, when your people are motivated to leave because they want to avoid 1-3 years of military service for basically no pay (3 if you're selected to serve as an officer, so Doctors, Engineers, and I believe certain other specializations, 1 otherwise).

It's funny (and depressing) to think about how were it not for some luck and some hard work, I'd probably be in my first of 3 years of conscription right this second. Instead I'm on HN :)

* Subject to the feelings and competence of the bureaucrats processing the paperwork, as well as any presidential decrees which might interfere with this policy.

Signon bonus: Free relocation (one way) for you and your family.

Benefits: Corporate housing with armed security guards.

Who could refuse such an offer?

Just a nitpick, Muslims specifically don't believe that Mohammad is god/allah. Good point otherwise though
zen_1··on EEVblog 1555 – LK99 Ambient Temperature Superconductor Busted [video]
The title is a bit clickbaitey but I didn't want to editorialize it. Dave recreates the video demo accompanying the recently announced LK99 superconductor using a (non superconducting) copper clad PCB and HDD magnet.

>We could outlaw math.

Maybe that's why math education is being sabotaged.

zen_1··on Data brokers selling license plate location and analytics data
This comes down to the difference between certain people around town recognizing your car if they happen to see it pass by, vs them hiring dedicated car-watchers all around town to keep track of your comings and goings and selling the data to anyone who comes asking. One is acceptable, the other is simply not.

I think you may have missed the part where games are supposed to be enjoyable (for all parties involved!)
zen_1··on Young people are flocking to astrology
God is dead, and his faithful have replaced him with shiny trinkets and wafty nonsense. Fitting.
zen_1··on Young people are flocking to astrology
Or guessing at geopolitics "My friend on telegram said Wagner are about to invade Belarus" and so on
zen_1··on Young people are flocking to astrology
Yes, but the hackers don't tend to think literal demons will invade earth unless the ~crystal chakras are aligned~ doom is ported to everything more complex than an opamp

>Who is prejudiced against North Africans and why?

I think France, Germany and the Netherlands have some degree of prejudice against North Africans (specifically Moroccans and Algerians).

As for why, you'd need to consult at a history book and look at the socioeconomic statuses of the aforementioned North African diasporas in those countries.

zen_1··on Injunction issued in case about social media pressure from US Government
Huh, so like Voldemort then. Fun.
zen_1··on 55 GiB/s FizzBuzz (2021)
The convention I'm used to uses .S to denote hand-written assembly files (usually tracked in git) vs .s for machine generated assembly which can be overwritten as needed.

> No idea how people have more than one kid...

Looking at the families I know, the mother (or grandparents if they're local, willing, and able) make child-rearing their top priority. Either that or they live in a country with dirt-cheap childcare due to cheap labor.

zen_1··on Hacker News evading criticism by selectively adding noreferrer to certain links
No.

;)

I tend to agree with you (finding the leading No\n grating when it's used as a "well actually" replacement) but ime its sometimes used by people from cultural backgrounds where the standard for communication is more direct than what the English-speaking world is used to, and not intended to come across as smug or know-it-all, and I don't mind it as much in those cases.

zen_1··on Searchable and sortable H1B salary database
I know more than one person who made more than $500,000 as a new grad, so it's not completely unreasonable. Most of that will be RSUs/cash bonus though, so not counted as part of H1B salary data as I understand it.
