zelias··on Tell HN: Azure outage
Anyone have betting odds on when Google will go down next? Are we looking at all 3 providers having outages in the span of 3 weeks?
zelias··on Apple M5 chip
Do I want to buy this, an M1 or an M4?
zelias··on Buckle Up, the Smart Glasses Backlash Is Coming
How can there be backlash against something that has yet to take off?
zelias··on Cracker Barrel Outrage Was Almost Certainly Driven by Bots, Researchers Say
I got a similar vibe from the “controversy” over that Sydney Sweeney American Eagle ad. Not a single human I talked to about it, left or right, gave anything approaching two craps about it.

It’s almost as if there are companies out there now selling outrage-as-a-service because outrage drives engagement and thus, attention market share, ideally translating into sales. Who knows if that last assumption has any merit though.

zelias··on ChatGPT Pulse
Man, my startup does this but exclusively for enterprises, where it actually makes sense
zelias··on ChatGPT Pulse
Yet another category of startups killed by an incumbent

zelias··on Shai-Hulud malware attack: Tinycolor and over 40 NPM packages compromised
How many packages now have been compromised over the past couple of weeks? The velocity of these attacks are insane. Part of me believes state actors must be involved at this point.

In any case, does anyone have an exhaustive list of all recently compromised npm packages + versions across the recent attacks? We need to do an exhaustive scan after this news...

zelias··on Robert Redford has died
I found the Watchmen HBO series alternate universe version of Redford as “liberal version of president Ronald Reagan” a fascinating thought experiment
zelias··on Meta just suspended the Facebook account of Neal Stephenson
Clearly the counter-AI that counteracts the ban happy AI isn’t in place yet
zelias··on Time travel is self-suppressing
wouldn't backwards time travel merely create an alternative timeline? for all we know, we simply live in the timeline that had to exist prior to the invention of time travel technology itself
zelias··on They tried Made in the USA – it was too expensive for their customers
Sounds like a good argument for Pyanodon....
zelias··on Making 2.5 Flash and 2.5 Pro GA, and introducing Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite
The finish reason is `length`. I have tried setting minimal token budgets, really small prompts, and max lengths of various sizes from 100-4000 and nothing seems to make a consistent dent in the behavioral pattern.
zelias··on Making 2.5 Flash and 2.5 Pro GA, and introducing Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite
Not sure where else to post this, but when attempting to use any of the Gemini 2.5 models via API, I receive an "empty content" response about 50% of the time. To be clear, the API responds successfully, but the `content` returned by the LLM is just an empty string.

Has anyone here had any luck working around this problem?

zelias··on Prompt engineering playbook for programmers
Since modern algorithmic driven brainrot has degraded the ability of the average consumer to read a complete sentence, let alone write one
zelias··on Trump announces 100% tariffs on movies ‘produced in foreign lands’
The rumor I heard is that Trump watched _Escape From Alcatraz_ over the weekend, which resulted in this decree in addition to the "we are reopening Alcatraz" decree
zelias··on Reddit is experiencing an outage
let the wild speculation commence
zelias··on "Slow Pay, Low Pay or No Pay": Blue Cross Approved Surgeries Then Refused to Pay
The "customer union" is supposed to be the government

But of course that has been captured as well

zelias··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
I fail to understand what is "malicious" about the idea that we, as a single species, can someday achieve an equitable and global state of cooperation despite historical tribal / racial / religious differences.

Just because an idea originated in Europe doesn't make it a bad one out of hand.

zelias··on Occupry your next lease to negotiate a better deal
Why is this flagged?
zelias··on Show HN: Factorio Learning Environment – Agents Build Factories
I dunno, main bus strikes me as an efficient way to feed all the mall assemblers in the early game before I can scale up to a train based base.

After the early game, totally agreed, ban the bus.

zelias··on Show HN: Factorio Learning Environment – Agents Build Factories
Fantastic! Now I can sit back and watch the factory grow itself!

More seriously, I think this is a great "next step" in the evolution of benchmarks. Contemporary benchmarks are really just standardized tests, but the Factorio problem set presents an unbounded canvas of creativity for solutioning.

zelias··on "Ensuring Accountability for All Agencies" – Executive Order
I admire (though do not agree with) the spirit of your argument. What I don't understand is how, given everything we know and have seen about Trump and the content of his character, you could possibly expect him to do the "honorable thing" when push comes to shove.

The Founders fought and bled and sacrificed together for the free principles that this country was founded on. Trump has done none of these things. In fact, he goes out of his way to show contempt for large swathes of the citizenry on a regular basis. The man is famous for refusing to pay his bills. Why would one expect this nakedly self-interested man to show a shred of honor at the eleventh hour when he has the chance to become a powerful tyrant for the remainder of his life?

zelias··on Scientists invent "slime" – could be used in medical, energy, robot applications
I always wondered how "living slimes" made their way into various low level video game sewer systems.

Now I can see it...this stuff dumped down the drain, mixed with refuse and the occasional decomposing organic material...who knows what it could produce

zelias··on The Zizians and the rationalist death cult
you wouldn't say that there are people in positions of great power in society who likely hold some of these beliefs?
zelias··on X partners with Visa to enable money transfers on the platform
Here's a hypothetical:

1) you put a bunch of money "in" this

2) you say something on twitter Elon dislikes

3) you get banned

4) you lose access to your money???

Seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen

zelias··on Show HN: Factorio Blueprint Visualizer
I actually found the new mechanics on Fulgora and Gleba very enjoyable. Fulgora especially, for whatever reason. I enjoyed spaghetti-ing my way through all the planets by primarily using the resources available on that planet ("starter" rocket full of belts and power poles notwithstanding).

Aquilo is just so barren. The new mechanic it introduces locks down player choice, as opposed to the other planets that are rife with opportunities for exploration and creativity.

zelias··on Show HN: Factorio Blueprint Visualizer
I burnt out mid-Aquilo. RIP
zelias··on Morgan Stanley Follows Citi, BofA in Quitting Climate Group
I think it's a shame that ESG/DEI/etc all got lumped in together by the culture warriors on various ends of the spectrum. It makes logical sense that a business that acts responsibly vis-a-vis its environmental externalities would generate greater value in the long run (whether because they've avoided fines, or reduced the negative externalities, or whatever) [0]. I don't think we'd have as much of this climate backtracking if the "E" had been kept separate from the "S" and the "G". Unfortunately, now it's all been lumped together as part of the never ending culture war. Shame.

[0] This doesn't speak to the problem of "greenwashing" investments, but that's a different thread imo.
