zelda-mazzy··on We investigated France's mass profiling machine
I read their report on Rotterdam's welfare fraud prediction system a few months ago and it was fascinating. Really opened my eyes to a lot of things, specifically how fast any bias can create a feedback loop that causes one demographic to be investigated more often than others.
zelda-mazzy··on 37, the median value for the second prime factor of an integer
Im going off what the article originally said:

"We see that 37 is the prime where roughly half of all numbers have something less than or equal to 37 as their first prime! So we’ve proven that 37 is the median second prime!"

I admit I read it wrong at first, but it made sense to me at the end of the article. So I don't believe median was misleading. My initial thought was, as numbers get larger and larger, the chance that the second most common prime factor is 37 so 50%, which didn't make sense because of how common 3 and 5 are. By the end I realized the function is taking into account the range of prime factors as an aggregate.

Now I understand that with enough composite numbers, the chance that their second prime factor is 37 OR BELOW converges to 50%, which is pretty neat.

It was a bit difficult to grasp at first, but it clicked after realizing it's all primes up to 37, not just 37. Kind of a neat fact, and I enjoyed reading this. Thanks for posting!
zelda-mazzy··on Ask HN: How are you using LLMs or ML to improve your SWE?
I use ChatGPT on problems where I have really specific questions about them. For instance why I'm getting a certain return value, why a function isn't working, etc. It's a lot less headache than fumbling through Stack Overflow or the official documentation (most of the time I do check documentation first, but there are times where it doesn't have my answer). I haven't started using Github Copilot yet but plan to soon.
zelda-mazzy··on HTML First
In theory these principles are really good concepts from an education standpoint. Where I teach, we teach students vanilla javascript and HTML as much as possible before moving on to frameworks that make things easier.

Some of these points I'm a bit confused on... is the point behind "Where possible, maintain the right-click-view-source affordance" supposed to be to make the learning barrier lower? While I understand the sentiment behind this, tools like React or Angular have significantly lowered the barrier to entry in their own ways.

zelda-mazzy··on A speed camera app for phones might save lives
I'm not sure how this would help in the long term. As it stands, most people ignore those flashing signs that tell you to slow down, or immediately speed back up once they pass the sign. Two ways we can really reduce speeding in the long term are better street design and building cities that don't require the use of a car. Mediumly-dense, mixed-use development means people can live close to where they work and shop and won't require cars. Better street design means a lot of things, but essentially it boils down to more tree-lined streets and narrower lanes. When lanes are wide and there Are no obstacles, drivers feel safer to blow past the speed limit, as opposed to when roads are narrower and there's a constant, looming threat of running into a tree trunk or bollard if they go too fast.
zelda-mazzy··on A Dutch graphic artist reconstructed Tenochtitlan in 3D
Thanks for putting this together and doing all the research. 1.5 years is a long time but the end result looks amazing. Are there any plans to let educational institutions or historical museums use this? I imagine such a presentation would be invaluable for Mesoamerican studies.
zelda-mazzy··on Uiua: A minimal stack-based, array-based language
Well this is neat. In an odd way it reminds me of how Assembly uses short commands, but instead of 1-4 letter cmdlets it's just symbols, but with many more arrays. It makes for a visually interesting codebase.

The thing that stands out the most to me is how the language itself functions as a work of art.

zelda-mazzy··on The most copied StackOverflow snippet of all time is flawed (2019)
I hardly ever just copy and paste for the exact reason the author talks about. Instead, I try to make sense of the solution, and if I have to, I'll hand-copy it down line-by-line to make sure I properly understand and refactor from there. I also rename variables, since often times there are so many foos and bars and bazes that it's completely unreadable by a human.

Also if I come across the problem a second time, I'll have better luck remembering what I did (as opposed to blindly copying).

zelda-mazzy··on ARPA-H looking for proposals to protect digital healthcare infrastructure
US-led initiative ARPA-H is currently looking for proposals to protect hospitals and clinics around the US from ransomware attacks - especially clinics in under-served, rural regions. They are looking for "proven technologies developed for national security and apply them to civilian health systems, clinical care facilities, and personal health devices."
