zeku··on Amazon workers on Staten Island vote to unionize
The simple fact is that an adult needs X amount of money to be able to live with roommates, eat, drive their car to your job, etc.

That amount of money is about $15 most places in the country at absolute minimum and that will be a struggle.

If you can't afford to pay someone enough money at 40 hours a week that they can live with 1 other person in an apartment, eat, buy a car, maintain a car, buy gas, and have a small amount of cash left over--then your business isn't a viable business man.

It's "simple economics"

zeku··on Latvia wants permanent U.S. troops, foreign minister tells Blinken
The US doesn't want to "shrink our monster".

Read the thread! The EU and many small allies like South Korea and Japan have absolutely ROSEY relations with The US because they need The US.

This is a massive strategic advantage that no sane American wants to give up.

It's also one of the few things in politics that is a win win. It largely discouraged bad actors from war(despite Ukraine rn we have still lived in relative peace for a long time). EU gets defense, US gets clout to negotiate with everywhere. Best friends.

zeku··on Google mandates workers back to Silicon Valley, other offices from April 4
I think the overall theme here shouldn't be "I'm sure we will lose ppl and that's fine".

Instead you should be an advocate for mixed teams. Why can't your remote coworker just zoom into the meeting with you onsite?

We can all be accommodating to each other.

I think it's important to not confuse WFH life with WFH life during a global pandemic.

Many people WFH and their kids have been stuck at home, they dont feel safe popping to the coffee shop for a few hours of work, and they dont feel safe going to social events.

Once people feel fully safe doing those things and the kids are back in school in person WFH life will elevate for so many.

zeku··on Acute aerobic exercise to recover from mental exhaustion
Just want to add to this thread: Walking. Just take a walk no need for something special! If we are talking a workout routine then that's different, but if it's just a mental reset after a challenging couple hours of work then go on a 15 min walk!
zeku··on Why Won’t Anyone Teach Her Math?
I graduated in 2018 from a state school in the USA.

No helping other students on assignments.

All exams are: closed book(this means no notes or textbooks with you during the exam) and done with a pencil and a BLANK white sheet of paper. I still managed a 3.75 CS GPA, but we were literally writing syntactically correct C and C++ on blank paper. Why oh why?

Early on before I had learned C++ well, I would get marked off something to the tune of -30 for missing a curly brace.

No one will miss that IRL when the IDE shows you the visual prompt that it's not there, OR you waste maybe a minute of your life if you forgot it when using VIM... -30 man oh man.

zeku··on Why are semi trucks in the US and Europe so different? (2018)
You can get a Truck Simulator game, and purchase gaming equipment for it. You can have a real life steering wheel, shifter, and pedals.

Image of such a setup: https://imgur.com/xUdS3wD taken from the trucksim subreddit.

zeku··on The case against masks at school
I still wear my mask to slow the transmission of covid so that less vulnerable people die, and so that our hospitals can stop being overrun.

I also personally think of this as well: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/27/health/coronavirus-mask-p...

Masking may reduce the severity of your covid infection, which would be pretty sweet.

So it's not an all or nothing.

zeku··on Tackling the crisis of care for older people: lessons from India and Japan
I think he was being too short to address your criticism.

America only ends up with a majority because the system creates and only has room for 2 political parties.

If America had a more hand wavey European like system, then America would likely have 2+ parties.

zeku··on Americans are rethinking where they want to live
Yes in the Nashville area we are very aware of it.

Most of Nashville Metro and surrounding counties are actually transplants or children of transplants. Once you go to a county that doesn't border metro Nashville the culture and accent change tremendously.

Everyone in the area is aware of "outsiders" and resents it to some degree.

I'm a young SWE from TN. I can't compete with SWE's from the coasts who have immense savings up on me and they're buying up all the homes.

SWE's who are 40+ in the area immediately bought brick 4 bed homes in the burbs in the nicest part of town when they got hired 10+ years ago. SWE's closer to 30 who are local are just able to buy an apartment if single income.

However it's a huge tide, this money coming in, the issue is most locals don't have ships to ride it.

zeku··on Americans are rethinking where they want to live
Honestly I'm from rural Tennessee. They aren't worried about you being an "outsider" they're most likely wondering if you're rich so they can overcharge you for work on your property.

zeku··on Swedish study finds discrimination against men in female-dominated occupations
Your comment is the kind of comment we have to stop if we are going to actually be able to push mens rights issues.

You're using divisive language with your second sentence and poison pilling the entire argument by attacking feminists.

This doesn't have to be a feminist vs whatever war, it needs to be a conversation around male issues and we need everyone at the table to make things better.

zeku··on Why Is German Internet So Bad
These speeds look pretty good to me to be honest. What's the line between bad internet and good internet, seriously?

For personal use and regular work use wouldn't it be maybe 100 down?

I'm more concerned about data caps once my speed can reach 100down, at least currently.

edit:

Also stability is huge. My partner's old house had 100down, but it would bottleneck or drop out about every 10minutes which made the service garbage for everything other than casual static web browsing.

zeku··on Diet soda may prompt food cravings, especially in women and people with obesity
Yep. Coke is every carbonated sugar drink. You have to get all the way to la croix for it to stop being a coke. South-Eastern USA aka "The American South"
zeku··on Diet soda may prompt food cravings, especially in women and people with obesity
It's normal to give to children due to marketing and it has not 1 but 2 addictive ingredients. Sugar && Caffeine. I was addicted to soda as a teen and it was very difficult to quit I had huge cravings.
zeku··on The big alcohol study that didn't happen
This is completely anecdotal, but Whoop data could be used to uncover what moderate drinking does to you as people are self reporting their habits daily.

It is common knowledge in the Whoop community that any amount of alcohol will impact your recovery score(a in house metric combined of HRV, amount sleep gotten, amount sleep needed, recent activity strain, & more) for near 72 hours.

zeku··on Researchers successfully potty-train cows
I've recently become vegetarian because of this. I just can't justify the lives of these animals just so I can eat a burger that is only 25% better than an impossible burger or whatever.

I'm not against making animals work for us, but I think they need to be treated with a level of dignity that their lives deserve.

Currently find myself in-between meat eating and vegan camps so I don't make a lot of friends with this haha

zeku··on Monitoring my home's air quality with AirGradient's DIY sensor
In Tennessee myself and it is only just now getting to a temperature/humidity that is bearable to be outdoors.

March spring hits and the pollen is crazy until June and by then it's too hot to really be outside without tree cover from 9am-8pm until around now.

My area is one of the worst pollen places in the country. You owe it to yourself before moving to look at a pollen map as well.

zeku··on Israel’s Covid-19 boosters are preventing infections, new studies suggest
I'm not an expert, but my intuition is that it shouldn't be a big deal since vaccines are meant to start your body's response to a pathogen. I'm sure we build antibodies to all kind of weak baby viruses all the time throughout our lives without even knowing it.
zeku··on Rugby: Head impact study shows cognitive decline after just one season
My HS rugby(USA) someone got a concussion pretty much every single game.

I decided to quit the sport after HS despite how fun it is, it's not worth my future.
