zecho··on Peter Thiel’s Bet on Donald Trump Pays Off
lol I never said that. I said people who work in computer science who say that <50% is a majority have a serious problem with math and should look for work elsewhere given the nature of our field.
zecho··on Peter Thiel’s Bet on Donald Trump Pays Off
Everyone else.
zecho··on Peter Thiel’s Bet on Donald Trump Pays Off
Psst. 59,704,886 < 59,938,290 + 4,072,835 + 1,218,065 + 804,228

If you can't do basic arithmetic, you should lose your career in this field, imo.

zecho··on Gawker Files for Bankruptcy, Will Be Put Up for Auction
oh yeah for sure man
zecho··on How the Internet will disrupt higher education’s most valuable asset: Prestige
Thought I was reading The Onion for a moment. Nobody cites Frank Bruni as a source unironically, do they?

>"...it will be harder and harder for Yale to explain what it offers for all that money except a piece of paper that says you went to Yale."

Yale has been clear about that since roughly 1693.

zecho··on When to join a startup
I think there's always been naive people in the labor force. See also: unpaid interns working at national magazines.
zecho··on How three teenagers invented an app to police the cops
Wow yeah. HUGE oversight by The Economist, imo.
zecho··on The Best Books I Read in 2015
Ah yes, David Brooks, who once complained about an extravagant around-the-world trip because he couldn't stop to stare at a painting for four hours like another famous person once did. He's the worst kind of middlebrow writer.
zecho··on Twitter announces layoffs
We very much need twitter. What other platform is there for teens to say 'DADDY' to world leaders? What other platform is their for those world leaders to put their feet in their mouth? These are the important things to online bullies and comedians.
zecho··on LibreStock – do-whatever-you-want stock photos
It sucks.

zecho··on Unethical behavior by Manning, the publisher of our book “Big Data”
Seems a bit overwrought over a font size.

Anil Dash started a document for folks to show support. He says he'll be in touch with the family soon.

zecho··on Ashley Madison founder steps down
Put an egg in your shoe and beat it, smart guy.
zecho··on How companies make millions off lead-poisoned, poor blacks
Fascinating businesses. I bet some smart hacker could totally improve this process, though.
zecho··on Bootstrap 4 alpha
From mdo's answer in the Slack chatroom:

> more people use SCSS, libsass is crazy fast, syntax is more explicitly clear, and I'm lazy and use SCSS at GitHub

zecho··on Bootstrap 4 alpha
Like which? Ember continues to depend on it. Angular uses a lightweight version. I don't think there's a lot of interest in reinventing the wheel as far as cross-browser JS libraries go.
zecho··on Bootstrap 4 alpha
To be clear: It's optional. Off by default.
zecho··on Self-Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson (1841) [pdf]
Not only did you get the wrong Concord resident, you trotted out the biggest misconception of the book with the subtitle "Where I Lived, and What I Lived For." Whenever this complaint comes up, it is very clear the writer didn't bother to read the book, or even its most famous passage, where Thoreau explains exactly what he was doing at Walden:

> I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion.

zecho··on How yuppies hacked the hacker ethos
The problem with TLDR summaries is that they're always overly blunt and often wrong and they tend to serve as dog whistles for people who are overly blunt and often wrong themselves.
zecho··on Show HN: Flexbox.io – a free video series on learning CSS Flexbox
If you're unwilling to spend two and a half hours learning flexbox, you're asking for a bad time with CSS in general. The flexbox spec alone is about 18,000 words long, which is about an hour and a half reading time for most people, to say nothing of comprehension or grasping the nuanced details.

One could spend a lifetime learning the geometries of grid systems, so 2.5 hours seems pretty reasonable to me.

zecho··on Online Cheating Site AshleyMadison Hacked
I think he stuck the landing pretty well, but I also don't go into a blind rage whenever I think about government spying.
zecho··on Homejoy says goodbye
> 1. The cleaners were not professionals. It felt like they were just recruiting anyone who wanted a job. You could really feel this with the lack of passion from the cleaners and the severe lack of quality cleaning. Most of the people complained and were quite rude sometimes. Cleaning is very much a skill as much as it is manual labor.

Maybe their passion wasn't cleaning your house for you and they just wanted some money to pursue real passions.

zecho··on Vim's 400 line function to wait for keyboard input
Yep. There's nothing worse that maintaining code that doesn't change, or rarely changes. All that doing nothing because the code works, or works well enough, to avoid anybody noticing it. Yes, that's the classic example of why legacy code is a nightmare to maintain. When I think of maintenance, I think of constantly refactoring things that work.
zecho··on The Disney Recipe (2013)
This is the better, link, imo. As the OP just swiped the image from this article.
zecho··on The Disney Recipe (2013)
Superhero media today, owned by Disney.
zecho··on The Really Big One
Man. In times like these—the northwest falling into the ocean or whatever—it's unimaginable to think about the sheer amount of data loss that could occur. I'd probably be really worried about that loss of data or, worse, the loss of services if millions of people suddenly died.
zecho··on React.js Introduction for People Who Know Just Enough JQuery
This is a good tutorial for people who think the React way is weird.

zecho··on Safari is the new IE
Handoff actually works for you? You're one in a million.
zecho··on Dynamics.js, a JavaScript library to create physics-based animations
Yes. I agree. Not all animations are bad. I think animated GIFs can also be an entertaining distraction from hacking on my business.
