zdkl··on Pocket-sized cloud with a Raspberry Pi
> Minio (S3-compatible block storage)

What are you using for storage? Powered HDD over USB or something?

zdkl··on Red Dwarfs Will Be Humanity’s Last Home Before the Universe Dies
I really like the IPFS solution to this. Basically a torrent where each chunk is addressable, so you get deduplication on each mirror even across unrelated file hierarchies.
zdkl··on StyleNeRF: A Style-Based 3D-Aware Generator for High-Resolution Image Synthesis
If it's "just code" someone somewhere is going to do it eventually, restrictions notwithstanding. Might as well do it in the open and publish about it so the problem space and its implications are (at least potentially) the object of further research. Oversimplification: Jurassic Park is about the lack of robust peer-review before going to prod!
zdkl··on Help preserve the internet with Archiveteam's warrior
AFAIK you can use IPFS (& clusters[0]) without relying on the crypto parts of that ecosystem. That ought to fit rather well with the use case.

zdkl··on Inflation rises 7.5% over past year, more than expected and highest since 1982
As `treis was pointing out, what matters is demand/supply of what. Assets? Labour? Cash?
zdkl··on Ask HN: Why do new browsers use Chromium instead of Firefox as their base?
Well, now we have PWAs. I'd be more than a bit bitter if I was a mozilla dev tasked with making those work on android/ios instead of on firefoxOs.
zdkl··on Self-Hosting Dozens of Web Applications and Services on a Single Server
I always hear about the easy setups, but never about total (man-hours included) cost of ownership through a couple release cycles on each component.
zdkl··on EU Commission to open source software
While 'competing' may not be a good word for it, there's an argument to be made that some software belongs in the commons. This sort of signature/certificate infrastructure is a good example. So why not have it hosted by a public entity? Maybe entrust a couple large libraries with operating and cross-mirroring repositories?
zdkl··on The Amazon Empire Strikes Back
A better keyword might be '(ultra-)liberal' rather than 'capitalist'.
zdkl··on Gigablast Search Engine
Well for starters, one could implement the API to return ActivityStreams formatted responses. That would be a good start to being compatible with the fediverse and stuff while not going insane in implementing a full and proper ActivityPub service. Been there, done that, way better tool for "lower level" features.

Step 1: don't post on HN about how you want to minimise your work-time I guess?
zdkl··on Django 4.0 release candidate 1 released
> either let it go or find some other way.

With Django as soon as I have anything to do with a database I seem to hit this with the ORM. So I start working around it. Next thing you know it all seems to fall apart because of how coupled the rest of the application is to Django's assumptions about views and entities in the DB.

So "You gave up instead of reading the docs.": I go back to flask, or recently FastApi where you have to figure your schemas and access patterns out for yourself in advance instead of building thorough and deep knowledge on how to deactivate parts of Django when they become redundant. Opinion my own, results may vary, IANA your dev, etc

zdkl··on Deldo is a sex toy control and teledildonics mode for Emacs
It's easier to control your grow lights than to write the equivalent for someone else. All the unspoken assumptions about how the system ought to work are yours. Therefore you don't have to fill in the gaps of someone else's attempt at describing what they want.
zdkl··on Trading cards are cool again
There is (was) this concept of "cinema ticket based" inflation index that linked consumer level effective inflation to the price of one entry for a movie across the years. I wonder if anyone has published a somewhat large scale estimation of the "post pandemic inflation" adjustment from a collection of these (consumer level) frothy assets.
zdkl··on Top officers of a Navy nuclear sub have lost their jobs over undersea collision
Even their own dialects, as if the acronyms weren't enough!
zdkl··on Trump’s new social media platform found using Mastodon code
Wouldn't a semi-malicious actor be mostly in the clear if they provided the upstream code and a statement declaring they make no modifications to the provided source directly? If so, what would the recourse be? I can't imagine a court backing a demand to reveal <malicious actor>'s production systems based on what little external evidence one would have in these circumstances.
zdkl··on Introducing the layer based SVG engine
> there's enough return on investment for them

Honestly, this sort of thing is more effective marketing to me than any communication strategy. In brand awareness and "employer-ability".

zdkl··on Show HN: Sending and Receiving SMS via APRS (VHF Amateur Radio)
Hold up, does that mean you are allowed to transmit on SMS/GSM/?? frequencies with a "end user/private operator" type license? Or do you have to fiddle with your phone to get it to listen to an alternative band? (As is probably obvious I have no experience with radio)
zdkl··on Maryland nuclear engineer and spouse arrested on espionage-related charges

zdkl··on Are software engineering “best practices” just developer preferences?
Define "specifications" and "conform" in terms that I might hear from a non technical client.
zdkl··on Record number of environmental activists murdered

Then you'll get annihilated by slander cases before any other inquiries even start. :(

zdkl··on Has AI found a new foundation?
> Everyone knows.

Well as one of my social circle's nerds with tenure, most of the questions about <AI/ML flavour of the month> I hear relate to their degree of agency/intelligence. So it may not be a novel statement that GPT-3 isn't intelligent but it is good to have references for the claim.

zdkl··on Many young people diagnosed with Tourette’s after watching a YouTube channel
I was about to jump in with the term "cognitohazard", from SCP lore. Imagine a future where you'd hear something like "Welcome to the Antimemetics Division. No, this is not your first day." (@qntm is a terrific story writer and also brought us hatetris)

zdkl··on How did American “wokeness” jump from elite schools to everyday life?
Why would you want to dismiss someone's research because you disagree with one of their premises? Do you automatically assume they've fudged their findings to fit? Because that sounds like source picking as well.
zdkl··on Pint – A Python package to define, operate and manipulate physical quantities
I second the appreciation of the lib name, and can relate to the "I programmed Pint to scratch my own itches" line, but how does it compare to Sympy? I feel like when you must deal with units, integration with other mathematical tools is indispensable. So while I guess numpy integration is more than good enough on that front, is this lib's api enough of an improvement over Sympy's to forego all the niceties the latter incorporates?

https://docs.sympy.org/latest/modules/physics/units/index.ht...

(edit: I'm very biased; Sympy's docs and code gave me a lot of fundamental mathematical intuitions -in python- that my education hasn't.)

zdkl··on Indian inventor dies in homemade helicopter accident
The old line of rotary-wing aircraft "beating the air into submission" is so gloriously accurate on every level. Those pilots are wired different, kind of like submariners (checklists, roles/responsability, ...) in order to deal with their complex environment.
zdkl··on The First Delta Force Trainee Class
Unless the situation you want to prepare is in/exfiltration of 30+miles of unfriendly territory, stuff like judo/jujitsu/... will be more immediately useful in real life situations. Less badass though, granted.
zdkl··on Jackson structured programming
Disclaimer: I have done exactly 0 research on JSP before today and come from python/lisp land. Being in the middle of developping an OpenAPI application with python's Pydantic (an extension of type annotations), I can't help but feel python is this close to being a combination of JSP and data model definitions. To go one step further if you write your modules with Hy (a lisp that interops & ~transpiles to python), you get a pretty darn elegant codebase that is a rather direct mapping of your domain problem to expressions which look a lot like these JSP examples.

Maybe I'm only just discovering for myself the "power of typed languages" (feel free to rib on duck typed devs here) but it feels like a huge progress in terms of productivity, bug count and readability. I love modern python.

zdkl··on IPCC: Sixth Assessment Report
Maybe proper productive conversation would be easier if you didn't label the entire population with differing opinion as "deniers ... refusing to share the same reality".

In other words, why would anyone get to "make politics" despite of anyone.
