zczc··on Ask HN: Do you recall any book or course that made a topic finally click?
I've got a similar insight from The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. The main theme of this book is creativity, and author explains why it is psychologically useful for creator to think about inspiration and help from higher beings like muses and angels.

zczc··on The Dangers of Microsoft Pluton
Interesting naming. "Microsoft Hell God".

Pluto (Greek: Πλούτων Plouton, "giver of wealth", Pluton in French and German) the most common name for the classical ruler of the underworld. Plouton was one of several euphemistic names for Hades, described in the Iliad as the god most hateful to mortals. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pluto_(mythology)

zczc··on Ask HN: Is anyone else genuinely scared that this is the start of WW3?
All geopolitical goals are just an optional cherry on top of the main internal objective which is deliberately put Russians into besieged fortress survival mode to keep Putin in power.

Or as George Orwell wrote in 1984 about perpetual war in the totalitarian state: “The social atmosphere is that of a besieged city, where the possession of a lump of horseflesh makes the difference between wealth and poverty. And at the same time the consciousness of being at war, and therefore in danger, makes the handing-over of all power to a small caste seem the natural, unavoidable condition of survival.”

I doubt any concession from the Ukraine would satisfy Putin. See https://fablesofaesop.com/the-wolf-and-the-lamb.html

zczc··on Scientists must resist cancel culture
Godwin's law does not invalidate argument. “[Godwin] rejected the idea that whoever invokes Godwin's Law has lost the argument, and argues that appropriate application of the rule "should function less as a conversation ender and more as a conversation starter"” - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law
zczc··on Scientists must resist cancel culture
"Racial cleansing" in German universities took part in 1935, the "Final solution" (started in 1942) was unthinkable at the time, and the immediate consequences of the "cleansing" was that "just" "some people were not being able to give lectures", but that policy alone had indeed been detrimental for science in Germany. We have payed the price for those lessons, and have the right to learn from them.

zczc··on How I spend less time on YouTube
What helped me was moving channels from YouTube subscriptions to RSS feeds. Thus I stopped opening YouTube homepage and play videos straight from RSS client.

zczc··on Apple CEO Tim Cook 'secretly' signed $275B deal with China in 2016
"In the end, the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it. It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it. Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality, was tacitly denied by their philosophy. The heresy of heresies was common sense. And what was terrifying was not that they would kill you for thinking otherwise, but that they might be right. For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable? If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable—what then?" — George Orwell, 1984

Moreover, Disney will just register its decade of works as a single multipart work, so this regime would encourage further monopolization
zczc··on Ask HN: What browser extensions are a must-have in 2021?
Firefox extensions:

- uBlock Origin

- Firefox Multi-Account Containers

- Tree Style Tab

- Context Search Origin - Allows searching from bookmarked search providers, killer feature is "Search All in Tabs" option which opens a tab for every provider in bookmark folder

- FoxyProxy - I've defined rules for blocked sites to open in Tor, much more usable than using Onion Browser, though less privacy
