zcid··on A Growing Problem in Real Estate: Too Many Too Big Houses
There are too many loopholes with holding property. You can create and diversify among enough companies and eventually you won't have to pay tax at all.

No politician will vote for this because they know where their bread is buttered. It would be suicide as they would find out when they lose every large donor. I doubt we'll ever get people into office that would vote for anything to disadvantage property holders.

Even if you vote it in through a referendum, I expect a judge will crush it through some weaselly interpretation of the constitution or other precedent. California in particular has had several major referendums reversed by the courts. Will of the oligarchy, not that of the people.

zcid··on A Growing Problem in Real Estate: Too Many Too Big Houses
Then we need to fix that. No state will pass legislation along these lines because it will put them at an economic disadvantage to every state that doesn't.
zcid··on A Growing Problem in Real Estate: Too Many Too Big Houses
We really need some stronger regulation on renting.

I'd like something along the lines of federal rent control. Limit the rent that can be charged to reduce the profitability of buying up house after house. This would be unpopular with the current owners of homes as it would lower property values, but over time they would remain much more stable.

zcid··on Mozilla patches Firefox zero-day abused in the wild
It should be available pretty soon. Void has already released the new version and they're a very small group.
zcid··on How LinkedIn exfiltrates extension data from the browser
Not providing an app for FirefoxOS is not the same as refusing entrance because your phone runs FirefoxOS. The LinkedIn case seems to be closer to the latter.
zcid··on Classes vs. Data Structures
Have you read Starship Troopers? It's one of Heinlein's finest novels.
zcid··on When we work out rigorously, our bodies limit our ability to expend energy
I wouldn't recommend using weights for any kind of distance. If you want to up the intensity, it's generally considered safer to do 400m/800m sprints, hill sprints, sled/prowler, etc.
zcid··on On the Future Computer Era: Modification of the American Character (1968)
The disenfranchisement is seen as part of the sentence. Traditionally, the crimes deserving of this were very serious such as murder, rape, felony robbery, etc. The people committing these crimes were considered as having violated the social contract in such a manner that society could no longer trust them.

Unfortunately, many less serious offences have been classified as more serious in order to be "hard on crime" leading to many generally trustworthy citizens losing rights.

zcid··on Oberlin College case shows how universities are losing their way
Multiple school officials were actively participating in the demonization of the business and using their authority to create economic sanctions on the same. I don't see how you can justify their behavior. Especially since Gibson's was an actual victim of a real crime unlike the narrative the school was trying to paint.

There was also a link to another article laying out the evidence of collusion by school administrators to do economic harm to the owners of the bakery. Do you defend that behavior as well?

zcid··on 8chan served with search warrant [pdf]
I hesitate to demonize 8ch solely on the basis that they require legal protocol to be followed. I expect all organizations to require warrants before handing over data to the authorities.
zcid··on How the pursuit of leisure drives internet use
It loaded without issue for me with js and cookies blocked.
zcid··on How the pursuit of leisure drives internet use
Leisure is one thing but mindless consumption is another. I worry about the future of the world's societies as they venture further and further into a state where consumption of media becomes the ultimate goal of life.
zcid··on Long, Pointy Shoes in Medieval Fashion
Thanks for the link. I hadn't heard of Sunstein before. I hadn't realized this was openly talked about by people in his station.
zcid··on Canada Plans to Ban Single-Use Plastics, Joining Growing Global Movement
A lot of our environmental issues have gone out of vogue because they tend to clash with the trendier value of immigration. It's easier for politicians to grandstand about carbon taxes and straws than face the real problems.
zcid··on Canada Plans to Ban Single-Use Plastics, Joining Growing Global Movement
I've seen this tossed around a lot the last few months, but I've yet to see any evidence of its truth. Do you have a link to a study or some other source for this?
zcid··on Desktop Neo – rethinking the desktop interface for productivity
That's a horrible analogy. And factually wrong. We use boats because wheels don't work very well on water. We use planes because they're faster. We don't use either anywhere near as much as we use trucks, cars, rail, and wheelbarrows.
zcid··on Long, Pointy Shoes in Medieval Fashion
I've always been amused by the conspiracy that flat earth is a smoke cloud put up to make all conspiracy theories look bad.
zcid··on America's rural radio stations are vanishing
A lot of the phones in the US will have a radio but no internal antennae. The radio is only activated when headphones are plugged in as they become the antenna.
zcid··on GDPR adtech complaints keep stacking up in Europe
Surprisingly, Techcrunch is a great example of a site that works very well without JS. Very clean.

Nothing makes me happier than rolling into an article and not having to enable JavaScript for 50 different domains to read 200 words of text.

zcid··on VPN – Very Precarious Narrative
I use a very similar list of addons. In addition I recommend:

* CanvasBlocker https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/canvasblocker...

* Cookie AutoDelete https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/cookie-autode...

and I block cookies by default using uMatrix.

Thanks for pointing out CSS Exfil Protection. I hadn't seen that one yet.

Edit: I also recently switched to NoHTTP instead of HTTPS-Everywhere. This way I have to explicitly allow any non-HTTPS connections.

zcid··on Reddit's /r/Piracy is deleting almost ten years of history to avoid ban
But political subreddits didn't start seeing bans until 2016. Around the same time, the face of the major news subreddits drastically changed as well. I don't know if it was a result of the election, but the timing does seem to consider further consideration of motives.

zcid··on The 3dfx Voodoo1
I still have my original Voodoo card. It's the one piece of computer hardware I've never been willing to throw away. I still remember spending 8 hours downloading the Quake demo and having my mind blown. The only other time that holds a candle to that is when I got the GLQuake version. No other game has ever taken me on a ride like that.

I'm sure it (far-right violence) exists. But most of the videos I have seen online show antifa initiating violence. As far as I can tell, antifa seem to be the soldiers for the extreme left. Are we just more willing to accept their behavior because they are fighting for the "correct" side?
zcid··on Stoicism's Appeal to the Rich and Powerful
Or stoicism applies most relevantly to the ups. From a Buddhist perspective, attachment to perceived pleasant moments leads to greater suffering when fortunes are reversed.
zcid··on Stoicism's Appeal to the Rich and Powerful
My first is on the way. I can't say for sure what my views will be in 5 years, but even with pregnancy I know there are things that could go wrong. Will I suffer if something goes awry? Absolutely. But will I let it adversely affect my future state of being? I hope not.

"So it goes"

zcid··on Stoicism's Appeal to the Rich and Powerful
I have found a stoic attitude a great method by which to weather the ups and downs of life. Whether that means stubbing my toe, dealing with death, or finding myself without an income or a place to live, acceptance of the situation as it is prevents wasting time and energy railing against the inevitabilities of life.
zcid··on Facebook to ban white nationalist content
I've talked to some people that didn't seem so much white supremacists as pro-white. They were mostly concerned about the willingness for society to ignore attacks on white people while vilifying the smallest transgressions against other groups.

I've also seen the violence from the masked, hard-left types while never any initiated from the other side. At least in some parts of the US. I can't speak for what occurs in Europe.
