zapzupnz··on Apple's Liquid Glass: When Aesthetics Beat Function
And yet macOS Tahoe reverses a lot of "getting rid of desktop design patterns", such as Launch Pad (which emulates the iPadOS home screen) being replaced by a more generic list of apps using the same interface as Spotlight.

Again, I think what people see as "getting rid of desktop design patterns" in macOS is mostly aesthetic. Mac apps remain Mac apps, they retain all the aspects of their interfaces that make them Mac apps.

More evidence in the way iPadOS 26 adopts certain aspects of the macOS interface, but does them in an iPadOS-oriented way that you wouldn't really say the two OS are converging, more that they're doing really weird impressions of each other — but underneath the grease paint, the same actors as always remain, each with their strengths.

(In saying that, System Settings is an abomination)

zapzupnz··on Apple's Liquid Glass: When Aesthetics Beat Function
Not only who asked for it, but who believes it? This tired line has been the same drum for well over a decade with no proper evidence to support it other than “tHeY lOoK tEh sAmE”.
zapzupnz··on Bill Atkinson's psychedelic user interface
See, that's helpful. Those are directions in which to be pointed. A bit America-centric but better than nothing. Thank you.

I mean, it's not the same is it, because I can tell you where I can at least find beer drinkers … down the pub, at the bar.

If your bubble has people in it who have access to psychedelics, then great. If one's people doesn't have that, "just talk to people" is profoundly unhelpful. That's a very odd and specific conversation to bring up within some circles.

zapzupnz··on At Least 13 People Died by Suicide Amid U.K. Post Office Scandal, Report Says
I’m curious to know how American legal system is better than any other country’s. From the outside looking in, it looks just as broken if not worse.

You may have been kidding, but I’m sure someone will genuinely think so and have some decent arguments for it.

zapzupnz··on Nintendo Switch 2 Slammed for Poor Display–120 Hz with 30 FPS Response Times
The comments on that article are wild. They're of people who seemingly play tech specs rather than actual games.

All that mixed in with plenty of people spouting some of the talking points about the screen protector, how the screen in supposedly fragile, etc. that also applied to the Switch OLED. All in all, a lot of unjustifiable, manufactured rage from people who neither own the console nor ever intended to get one.

For $500, were people expecting to put an LG G5 in their backpacks?

Also, I know that we don't editorialise titles on HN, but I wish we could for this: "30 FPS response times" comes directly from the article, but they mean "30 ms", not "30 FPS".

zapzupnz··on Discord Is Threatening to Shutdown BotGhost
That makes sense.
zapzupnz··on Discord Is Threatening to Shutdown BotGhost
I'm not sure how the two are remotely comparable. I don't go to Reddit for live discussion, voice and video chat, etc.
zapzupnz··on Apple's Liquid Glass is prep work for AR interfaces, not just a design refresh
In the Apple ecosystem, grey hasn't meant 'disabled' for years except for glyphs and text. In Liquid Glass, glyphs and text haven't changed their colouration.
zapzupnz··on Apple's Liquid Glass is prep work for AR interfaces, not just a design refresh
Funnily enough, I thought 7 dialled it up with windows no longer going opaque when maximised and the default blue being slightly more translucent-looking than the sky blue in Vista.
zapzupnz··on Framework Laptop 12 review
I think the person to whom you're replying may not have realised you're talking about one of the Framework 13s, not the Framework 12.
zapzupnz··on From SDR to 'Fake HDR': Mario Kart World on Switch 2
I don't think it's unusual at all, depending on what genre of games they play. For example, they may be thinking of the likes of many PC strategy games where the music seems to just come in seemingly at random and distract, or completely ruin the ambience that the game world is trying to set.
zapzupnz··on From SDR to 'Fake HDR': Mario Kart World on Switch 2
I can’t believe that in 50 years, you’ve been unable to imagine people disabling music. I turn it off in games like Minecraft because it serves no purpose, and my husband routinely disables it in Factorio. Then you’ve got people with hearing difficulties I would rather hear the sound effects as they help gameplay.

Truly, in 50 years, none of this has occurred to you or you’ve never witnessed it in friends or family? That seems hyperbolic

zapzupnz··on From SDR to 'Fake HDR': Mario Kart World on Switch 2
> Mario Kart World generally looks more saturated than previous games if anything, so it definitely meets that minimum.

Compare any of the retro tracks to their World counterpart, then say that again. The game’s general palette and design is so washed out and bland compared to the DS, Wii, 3DS, and Tour versions of those tracks.

zapzupnz··on VisionOS 26 keeps pushing Apple's newest platform toward the future
People don’t pay attention to how true innovation comes through iteration. We didn’t just magically have the devices we have today from nothing; they are the result of years of subtle improvements over time.

That anybody on HN doesn’t realise this blows my mind, but perhaps they’re only young and think the world has always been full of amazing devices like this since the get go.

zapzupnz··on VisionOS 26 keeps pushing Apple's newest platform toward the future
This timeline isn’t right. The MacBook Air preceded that particular MacBook, but they were different categories (Air didn’t have a Retina display, for example).

The MacBook Air eventually took on the general unibody design of the 11” MacBook, then improved upon it in most ways.

It’s version 3. 2 was last year; 2.5 just released
zapzupnz··on Apple announces Foundation Models and Containerization frameworks, etc
The theatrics of being *forced* to use completely optional, opt-in features has been a staple of discussions regarding Apple for years.

Every year, macOS and iPadOS look superficially more and more similar, but they remain distinct in their interfaces, features, etc. But the past 15 years have been "we'll be *forced* to only use Apple-vetted software, just like the App Store!"

And yeah, the Gatekeeper mechanism got less straight-forward to get around in macOS 15, but … I don't know, someone will shoot me down for this, but it's been a long 15 years to be an Apple user with all that noise going on around you from people who really don't have the first clue what they're talking about — and on HN, no less.

They can come back to me when what they say actually happens. Until then, fifteen dang years.

zapzupnz··on Apple announces Foundation Models and Containerization frameworks, etc
Not quite. As another user mentioned, there's Swift Playgrounds which is complete enough that you can even upload apps made in it to the App Store. Aside from that, there are also IDEs like Pythonista for creating Python-based apps and others for Lua, JavaScript, etc. many of which come with their own frameworks for making native iOS/iPadOS interfaces.

In Settings -> Accessibility -> Display, you can enable Increase Contrast or Reduce Transparency to get rid of some of the worse glass effects, and Settings -> Accessibility -> Motion, you can enable Reduce Motion to get rid of the some of the light effects for content passing under glass buttons.
zapzupnz··on Containerization is a Swift package for running Linux containers on macOS
It's not that surprising. Much of Swift and its frameworks are contributed by the open source community.

They’re more likely talking about their use of SwiftUI on Windows
zapzupnz··on Mac Themes Garden
The pipeline from Windows to Linux is fairly clear. The pipeline from Mac to Linux is less evident; the dyed in the wool Mac users tend to stay that way, using Linux for work rather than a daily driver.

Queue a Mac-to-Linux user to contradict this, and there's plenty of them, but we Mac users are truly the dictionary definition of the sunk cost fallacy in more ways than one.

zapzupnz··on Native visionOS platform support
It no more smells of desperation than when Apple contributed modern ScreenCaptureKit support to OBS Studio. They want great experiences for their own platforms and sometimes that means reaching out to other projects.

It's true that the Vision Pro hasn't seen the uptake that Apple's other platforms did at launch, like the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, etc. — but it's nearsighted to think that Apple can't play a long game. It has the patience (and money) to play it all the way to the eventual release of their glasses; by that time, the platform will already have plenty of fantastic software ported from iOS and, eventually, other platforms through ventures like this.

You must mean CuriosityStream because most of my favourite Nebula creators are also YouTubers. Usually, the Nebula version of their video is slightly longer, too.

zapzupnz··on Marsha P Johnson: A Chrome extension to highlight trans erasure
I know that on HN it is discouraged to say things like “did you even read the page?” But I feel it’s apt — not only will you see it’s an unsigned extension (so not on the Chrome Web Store, meaning the extension itself isn’t the channel for activism; the GitHub page’s README.md does that all on its own) but they provide examples of the trans erasure, particularly heinously by the US federal government.

The erasure you claim isn’t happening is right there, plain as day.

When you are not personally affected by something, clearly having no stakes in the matter, I borrow another example of what we generally avoid on HN but feels so apt: sit down.
