zapu··on Let's stop bashing C#
Works fine for me.
zapu··on Carbon monoxide poisoning from 3D laser printer may have killed Berkeley couple
Damn, I need to invest in some CO sensor. Very sad to read.
zapu··on TheFacebook.com’s darker side (2004)
I assumed there is some sort of rivalry between Stanford and Cornell - I'm not in US so I wouldn't know. But you would not see this kind of statement in a paper nowadays, that's for sure.
zapu··on Paper is the real 'killer app'
Thank you very much for the answer!

So the pens that Whynote sells are just branded Staedtler 305, is that right? Not having to ship the pens from abroad and being able to buy them locally would sell the product for me.

Are there any other unexpected caveats there? Like, I don't know, do your fingers get dirty because of small particles of the ink that didn't stick, which add up over time (think whiteboard markers but on smaller scale)?

Because this really looks too good to be true, at least for me. Maybe I should order and see myself...

Wipebook, on their webpage, claim they are available in Staples: https://wipebook.com/pages/faqs

Woah, I kind of want one now.
zapu··on Container Tabs
Oh wow, didn't even know about that in Chrome. Thanks.
zapu··on Moving beyond localStorage
I don't understand how any encryption like this helps, unless it's end-to-end. When somebody breaks in, they just get the encryption keys as well, no? Can anyone point out what am I missing here? Thank you.

Doesn't look like anything to me.
zapu··on The first web site
I have some as well, I wonder from which extension, probably Vimium ;)
zapu··on Can Sweden tackle the throwaway society?
Thank you. I don't think I would be able to touch anything newer than that, honestly. Especially with current-generation devices, where everything is literally glued together, to a point where disassembling it and assembling back is next to impossible unless you have the specific tools (and skills) already.

I have iPhone 5S and the battery is kind of giving up. Still going to try to find a shop (too bad it won't be Apple official one) where they'd do a battery replacement before buying a new one.

Where I live, there is a disposal fee for tires as well. It's about 2$ per tire, though ;) With tires, however, it's not like you buy a new one because you got bored with your old tire. You change them to maintain road safety.

Recently I managed to repair an old iPod Video - it's about 25$ if you want to buy used, working one. I managed to order the parts from AliExpress for about 10$ total. I make enough money to buy myself a new music player if I wanted to, but the fact that there will be one less potentially toxic piece of garbage somewhere in a landfill feels really good.

zapu··on Deleting the golang subreddit
I didn't know, thank you! I've edited my post so it doesn't misinform people.
zapu··on Deleting the golang subreddit
I'm far from stating that t_d used bots to push submissions up, because there is no definite proof, but what I know for sure is that the US election ruined browsing /r/all for me. While it was mostly porn and memes before, every now and then I would bump into something interesting from a subreddit I didn't know. But during the election it was 90% of either t_d or sandersforpresident.

EDIT: Apparently reddit has changed the /r/all algorithm so this is no longer true. Thanks everyone for informing me!

zapu··on Deleting the golang subreddit
There is a thread on golang subreddit about this. Users are not happy.

https://www.reddit.com/r/golang/comments/5eqs64/proposal_to_...

From what I understand, the golang team does not want any association with the subredit or reddit as a whole. But I don't understand how /u/spez actions have triggered this. It looks like the proposal of /r/golang deletion is either a political statement, or go team wanted to get rid of it before and were just looking for an excuse.

Everything at expense of /r/golang (and therefore the go language itself) users.

zapu··on Firefox Focus – a free, fast and easy to use private browser for iOS
Is either able to use JIT for JavaScript engine or is it only enabled for Apple's "blessed-process" iOS Safari?
zapu··on Keybase chooses Zcash
That's an important example. Person A can make a perfectly legal transaction with Person B who is involved in illegal activities, without Person A knowing that. Then, external observer, not knowing the transaction details, might as well associate Person A with the same illegal activities. A false positive in metadata analysis.

Thank you for explanation.

~3 year OVH user here, multiple dedicated servers. No problems whatsoever, and DDOS protection that actually saved us a few times.

I've been in that position before, where people would find my e-mail address as a supposed tech support for something I have no relationship with whatsoever. Usually when you tell them they have a wrong e-mail, they get really angry ("I want to talk to your manager!" kind of angry). So it's better to just not respond at all.
zapu··on Why did ProtonMail vanish from Google search results for months?
Can you elaborate how free tier is almost useless? I'm using ProtonMail as my secondary e-mail and I'm on free tier, and it is pretty useful. Much more useful than FastMail which pretty much forced me to switch to paid plan right away or else I will be unable to send e-mail - all this to combat spammers.
zapu··on TLS 1.2 Comes to Mono
I wanted to post "Patches welcome!", but then I remembered, wasn't mono backed by commercial company and then bought by Microsoft? It's a shame that they are lagging behind in security critical areas.
zapu··on Xiaomi Mi Air 13.3in Notebook Review
I agree. Not quite "retina" but almost too high DPI for unscaled Windows.
zapu··on Mark Zuckerberg's virtual reality demo [video]
They are working with what they have. There are no face cameras or anything like that in Oculus Rift, so the expressions are literally "gestures", from what I've read. You raise your hands, your avatar is "happy", you wave your head, your avatar is "sad" etc.

This should change in next generations of VR helmets.

zapu··on There's no easy way to say this
Probably, yes. I'm guilty of taking jobs like these in the past as well.

Oh, wow. I totally had this on one PC back in the day. I thought I was going insane, cause these were the times when I was spending way too much time in front of the screen.

Ah, the times of getting a perfect setup for music games: the combination of a simple TV with low lag (introduced by picture scalers and other processing), and a simplest stereo connected with RCA cables.
