zappo2938··on Food Delivery Robots Are Feeding Camera Footage to the LAPD, Emails Show
What did I miss? Someone stole a robot with a camera. Video from the robot's camera was given to the police about this case. Normally, all video from the robot's camera is deleted per a short retention policy.

While sitting a public area working on my computer minding my own business not interacting with anyone, a drug user who looked like some of the people abusing the robot in the video had threatened to beat me last week. I spoke with the business with a camera to see if they had evidence of this. The camera also recorded the voice. I called the police and made a report submitting evidence of the assault. How is this different. The camera and police acted as they should. Why is this bad? I'm happy there was camera recording.

zappo2938··on Digital nomads take over Mexico City: “You're a fucking plague, locals hate you”
I went to Mexico 20 years ago. I thought I'd try to find work for a few months. Even though I found a job other people prevented me from working. They were orders of magnitude more aggressive against me than I remembered Americans were in California against illegal aliens from Mexico at that time.

zappo2938··on Ask HN: How do you get out of a rut?
I’d start with making the bed in the morning with a mindset of mind over matter. It gives the feeling of being in control.

Also, buy a cheap ticket a couple weeks out and fly to a new city for a weekend, if in the US, Austin, New Orleans, or San Juan PR. Stay at a hostel and interact with people having fun.

zappo2938··on Why are there so many unfinished buildings in Africa?
If I had evidence I sure wouldn't post it from an account with potentially identifiable information. Let's say a New York Times investigative reporter for curiosity did a piece on where the associates of the Gambino family are today, don't be surprised if some of them own legitimate businesses mining and shipping natural resources from Africa. There are lists of associates and they have legitimate businesses that pay taxes. There really aren't secrets here. The activity is above board. So what if they are bribing people in Africa? The FBI doesn't care. The CIA doesn't care. Also, I'm careful about saying 'white, American-Italians' because there are likely dark complexion Sicilian Italians involved too. They are connected to North Africa, a hop skip and a jump away, however, the stories I've heard concern East and Central Africa.
zappo2938··on Why are there so many unfinished buildings in Africa?
> exploitation by industrialized nations

We hear a lot about how China invests billions in Africa building highways and such in order to have influence. I have a conspiracy theory based on stories I heard. It would be nice to know if is true or not. What Americans don't realize is that the Gambino crime family didn't just dissolve, they went to Africa, and they bought rights to natural resources such as coal. They have since the early 2000s become the brokers between natural resources in Africa and 3rd party buyers around the world and their business is violence.

zappo2938··on Who won the Amstel Gold Race? Human error in photo-finishes
> 216.75km long race by someone who (possibly) won by 0.016 seconds

In cycling races that are not time trials it is disadvantaged to be in the lead until the last 0.016 seconds. The peleton in the video was quickly catching up to the three lead riders not because they were tired but rather because they were fighting to be in third position. It is just as much like a strategic game of chess as an endurance sport. Because of this, the game only works if a contender can win by a hair's length.

zappo2938··on Where’s the evidence that grit predicts success?
The road to success: either "be the first, be the best, or cheat." I was on the transom of a mega yacht at Atlantis on Paradise Island and a tourist walking along the dock asked me how he can get one for himself. I shrugged, I wouldn't know, I only worked on it and said "work hard, I guess." He said that he works in IT, works his butt off, and does ok but will never have that type of wealth. But my assertion isn't quite the truth. It is more simple than my first statement. "Buy low and sell high." It helps coming from wealth however most of the Americans who own yachts are self made often coming from middle class or lower families. They started the process of buying low and selling high in the 60s and 70s. Most of the people I've met who own a yacht share a characteristic, they are passionate about making the deal. It is almost like they aren't passionate about making money but rather getting something below its market value and selling it above its market value.
zappo2938··on Ethical anti-design, or designing products that people can't get addicted to
> take a break

I write code now however I was a private yacht chef in a past career. I can make food that makes people high -- its a drug. When I started with yacht charters with 8 - 12 guests for a week or 10 days cruising the Exumas or BVIs and the guests were rude to me I responded by cooking the best food they ever tasted day in and day out knowing that they wouldn't be able to stop eating. If you are an asshole, you will eat the best tasting food on Earth. "Diplomacy is telling someone to go to hell and make them look forward to the trip."

On the flip side, I started working on private, not charter, yachts for a couple different families whom a decade later I still speak with. They, however, didn't eat as well. The dishes were a lot more wholesome and plain. The whole reason I started coding was because I was in the middle of the ocean bobbing around spending only 3 hours a day working, cooking for guests and crew and started hacking on my laptop on the galley table looking for something to do to stave off bordom which we all know causes mutiny on ships. Nobody can eat restaurant style food breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It causes people to be fat, heart disease, and diabetes. Of course, for special occasions, anniversaries, birthdays, or the owners want me to show off for a night to their guests I would use the skills I developed working years in in 2 and 3 star Michelin restaurants, however, the rest of the time, we would all * take a break * from eating fancy food. Sometimes I'd kick of the owners off the boat sending them to a restaurant for the night but they preferred my simple dishes where ever we went. It is appreciated.

When I started with charters at the beginning working on yachts I was instructed to provide multi course restaurant food. On my first charter a guest said they love the food however seeing the fish sandwich I prepared for the crew asked if they could just eat the same things they saw me serving the crew. It is a hard pill for a chef to swallow that people don't want fancy stuff all the time. What is my purpose? To pass the butter? That moment forth I cooked the same things for guests and crew accept for when people are assholes. A lot of chefs are insecure if they aren't doing restaurant style food. I'm lucky that I have already proven myself so I don't have to anymore. It became the dumbest easiest job ever with the hardest part having to catch dinner first.

But, yeah, I get how it is healthy to take a break.

zappo2938··on React and D3.js
Especially if the developer is building with React Native which doesn't have canvas or svg natively but rather requires a shim for svg. zappo2938··on React and D3.js
I can't imagine d3 being performant with dynamic data input when all the d3 code inside the useEffect() is rerun over and over again. Also, how do you handle the data flow with events such as tracking mouse movements and sharing that event data between d3 and react?

I wonder if is better to have the d3 function inside of useCallback() and pass data as a parameter where the function isn't re evaluated rather than in useEffect where the function is run from the top again?

zappo2938··on Moderna mRNA sequence released to GitHub [pdf]
Wow Looks like it is analogous to having a header on a TCP packet. [0] Here is an animation of mRNA encoding translated to proteins inside a ribosome. [1]

"The ribosome is composed of one large and one small sub unit that assemble around the messenger RNA, which then passes through the ribosome like a computer tape. The amino acid building blocks, that's the small glowing red molecules, are carried into the ribosome attached to specific transfer RNAs; that's the larger green molecules also referred to as tRNA. The small sub unit of the ribosome positions the mRNA so that it can be read in groups of three letters known as a codon."

Very analogous indeed.

zappo2938··on Based Cooking
I was a professional chef for 17 years, 11 in Michelin star restaurants and 6 as a private yacht chef. I used Cooks Illustrated America's Test Kitchen's[0] cookbooks on the yacht, mostly The Best Recipe. [1] That set of recipes was perfect for what I was doing and freed me from having to think about what to make. There are was so much available I was doing a different dish every night and day for months on end. I always enjoy doing stuff I haven't done before. Bobbing around in the ocean one week in from the last supermarket and another week before access to another decent one, it is nice to have a reliable source of new recipes to plan with. What is really important is that it is one thing that every recipe in a cookbook works, often they don't, and it is another thing that not only does every recipe work but they always have fantastic results. More or less that set of cookbooks made my life so easy, I found a new hobby on the yacht writing code. As for a monthly source, Cook Illustrated and Cooking Light are my favorite sources. As a private chef, I can't make restaurant food everyday for my clients because restaurant food is more or less an unhealthy drug that makes people fat so I'd use Cooking Light for inspiration although the recipes are not as guaranteed for perfect results as the Cooks Illustrated recipes.

Until four months ago I used PHPStorm although I haven't typed a line of PHP code in at least 4 years. Since all my coding is with TypeScript I decided to switch to VSCode and not renew my Idea subscription.

(edit) Nightclubs have often been used for laundering money. Changes in how money is laundered because people going cashless using credit cards, legalization of the billion dollar pot industry, and technology have changed that. zappo2938··on Naked shorting: The curious incident of the shares that didn't exist (2005)
Does this mean that there is still only 100% of stocks available and the ratio of iou's to total stocks 113/100?

I guess that makes sense that a person can borrow a stock, sell it, borrow it again from the second buyer, sell it again. The number of stocks floating around stay the same, however, the number of iou's increases. Likewise, a person can buy the one share, return it, then buy it again, and return it again to settle the second of the iou's.

Interesting that nobody is really explaining the mechanics of how this works. Makes me wonder if a lot of retail investors are about to get hurt.
