zappo2938··on GameStop Is Rage Against the Financial Machine
Meanwhile a handful of families still own and control 70% of all stocks which aren't traded, that is they aren't buying or selling and will likely transfer the ownership to family in decades time. The only way that will change is by changes in taxation. What we are looking at with WSB and GME is a very, very tiny perspective of the entire machine. It is interesting but a very small influence on the entirety. Nonetheless, all these instruments, such as short selling and options, are designed to create liquidity and stability. It's working by design. This isn't a bug, it is a feature.
zappo2938··on Claude Shannon Demonstrates Machine Learning (1952)
"The norms of consumer culture and domesticity were disseminated via new and popular forms of entertainment – not just the television, which became a fixture in middle-class American households during the 1950s, but also women’s magazines, popular psychology, and cinema. Shows promoting the values of domesticity, like Leave it to Beaver and Father Knows Best, became especially popular. These shows portrayed the primary roles of women as wives and mothers. Lucille Ball, in I Love Lucy, inevitably met with disaster whenever she pursued job opportunities or interests that took her outside of the household." [0]

What is striking about this video is not only the advancement of technology but also women actively working outside the home which was counter culture for the time even though the one woman sitting down symbolically is in a subordinate position with the man standing over her.

(Yeah, I know better than to mention something like this here.)

zappo2938··on Python's Type Checking Renaissance
I recently started working through python tutorials in videos, books, and blogs on statistics and machine learning. As a front end developer who has over the last several years started to adhere to using immutable objects and functional programming in JavaScript and subsequently TypeScript, which doesn't matter as much from my point of view. All the bugs that arise in the python tutorials from data mutation and side effects in class methods (looking at you inplace=True in Pandas) is what disturbs me the most about my first exposure to Python.

I really hope to start seeing some immutable architecture and structuring in Python more than type checking, as my first impression.

zappo2938··on The Battle of GameStop
The jury is still deliberating whether WSB is an effective cartel or not. At the end of the day, the members total investment is so small that it doubtfully makes any difference. It is probably more analogous to Ed Thorp's Beat the Dealer. He devised an algorithm to count cards. Ran a simulation on a computer at MIT, got bankrolled, and went to Reno to test it in person. Why didn't he continue counting cards in Nevada? Because hedge funds are more lucrative per effort.

Nonetheless, after he published Beat the Dealer casinos greatly benefitted rather than a situation where they lost revenue from Blackjack card counters. Thousands of people believing that they could make a fortune using his system went to the casinos. Between the free drinks and the inability to focus, people lost fortunes instead. Moreover, Blackjack remained hugely popular.

You never hear about people losing money in Vegas, only about that one time someone won big. It's the same with WSB, sort of. They do lose money and lots of it. Moreover, they post the losses. It is only during squeezes like with Tesla do we hear about it in the media.

Still, at the end of the day, they invest a very, very small sum of money and can't have much influence. I thought for a while that maybe there were outside influences driving memes to get the cartel to behave a certain way, but decided they are not much of a force.

zappo2938··on Facebook Says It Is Removing All Content Mentioning 'Stop the Steal'
‘Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.…’

Winston S Churchill, 11 November 1947

Don't give up on democracy. It is hard. Nonetheless, it will always remain the best form of government we have seen. The United States Constitution is resilient as it has proven time and time again.

zappo2938··on A bit on scaling chess.com's database
They mention the huge bump in traffic from Netflix's "The Queen's Gambit". However, it is worth seeing the Google Trend for searches for both the show and chess since they wrote the blog post. Initially there was correlation between interest in the show and the game, however, as interest in the show wained, interest in the game remains steadily high.
zappo2938··on Archivists Are Preserving Capitol Hill Riot Livestreams Before They’re Deleted
Clearly you haven't looked at it. The MAGA riot had people with guns, pipe bombs, and wrist ties. It was not a party. It was an attempted insurrection against a lawfully elected government while the military was ordered to stand down and stay away while it happened.

Thank you for the recommendation. I build admin dashboards using stock (double entendre?) charting libraries and recently have been using my own d3.js visualizations with dynamic content. At this point, I might as well start to delve into data science and have been investing time developing math skills with calculus and linear algebra. I would like to also take some time and learn basic statistics concepts. I want a level up a little bit but don't see the point getting a Ph.D. in machine learning. I only need the basics to start from.

Also, we might have a far better recycling technology in 100 years and will know where to find the material. Perhaps it is better to simply store it somewhere for the future. Only now we should make sure it doesn't find its way to the oceans.
zappo2938··on What If You Could Do It All Over?
Maybe. Trying to emulate other people's success always ended in failure for me whether in life or opinionated coding frameworks. Americas Test Kitchen approach to recipes when they first explain all the ways they failed is infinitely more valuable to me than just the one successful recipe.
zappo2938··on What If You Could Do It All Over?
I tell any young adult who will listen the mistakes I made. It's nice when they stop by with stories and whiskey the days before Christmas and see them come up strong, happy, and on a solid path towards success. It's only through the stories of our mistakes that we can escape the clutches of time.

zappo2938··on Why you should re-read Paradise Lost (2017)
When I first read it I thought about how hell experienced all the forms of government in the Republic with democracy leading to tyranny. Then a few years ago I started to reread it and couldn't find the pattern as though I made it up all those years ago. It was just that I was so sure something was some way and in the end it was just a hallucination.
