zakk··on Flang – A Fortran compiler targeting LLVM
That's what I would define as a "some obscure edge case", see my comment above.
zakk··on Flang – A Fortran compiler targeting LLVM
...and then your Javascript code will run on node.js, and the instance will be Dockerized for ease of deployment to a VPS. How many layers of abstractions are there?
zakk··on Flang – A Fortran compiler targeting LLVM
Except for some obscure edge case, it wouldn't really be a great idea to run them on a JS vm... FORTRAN code still in use is computation-heavy stuff for use cases where speed makes a big difference, the performance hit of a VM wouldn't be acceptable.
zakk··on Ask HN: Online vote using blockcahain?
The problem is that people interested in manipulating the election could come to your place and offer you money in exchange for your vote.

That's a damn good reason for using polling booths in public places.

zakk··on The great British Brexit robbery
On the hand hand, Trump supporters are claiming that Soros is -- more or less legally -- financing left wing organisations and influencing the political debate in many countries.

You know what? Both of them are right, and actually this is not a new phenomenon, rich people have been influencing democracy for a long time now.

zakk··on Macron condemns 'massive' hacking attack
Some say that the free market is an advantage to everyone.

Other say that that in the end it's always a zero sum game, as you do.

However, in the latter case, given that participation to the EU is on a voluntary basis, more and more countries may decide to exit.

zakk··on Macron condemns 'massive' hacking attack
Maybe you misread my comment. Weaker Europe does not mean collapse of EU and collapse of Eurozone.
zakk··on Macron condemns 'massive' hacking attack
Italy contributes more money to Europe's balance than it gets back. So a weaker, smaller Europe would mean that more money remains in Italy.

Also weaker EU does not mean collapse of EU, so tourism would be the same, as would be trade.

I am not necessarily an advocate of this solution, however, just pointing out that the current status of EU is not the best possible world for each one of its 27 members States.

zakk··on Macron condemns 'massive' hacking attack
Very debated issue, but many think that the Souther countries (Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal) may have a lot of benefits from a weakened Europe.
zakk··on The licensing program for MP3-related patents has been terminated
A bit like not believing in the law, something you can scream while they drag you to prison.
zakk··on Gender and verbs across 100K stories: a tidy analysis
The gender is strongly correlated to the biological sex. The biological sex is, in turn, strongly correlated to physical strength, aggressivity and other traits.

I enjoyed the technical description, but the results didn't exactly shock me!

zakk··on Kazakhstan spells out plans for alphabet swap
I don't know about Turkish, but German is not phonetically spelled.

Of course it is better than the mess English is, but there are still many exceptions, silent letters, dypthongs, etc.

For an almost phonetic language try Italian, for a completely phonetic one try Serbian with the Cyrillic script.

zakk··on Pi-hole – A black hole for Internet advertisements
Stupid question: how does it work when the majority of traffic is through SSL, making a request to an ad and a request to actual content indistinguishable?

I don't think all websites serve ads from a different host. Do they?

zakk··on CIA malware and hacking tools
Are they implying that Facebook is being DOS'ed?
zakk··on What's Really Warming the World?
I can accept that in an infographic meant for a wide audience very strong correlation may imply causation. The aim of the infographic is, indeed, praiseworthy.

However the missing y axis for the second factor really upsets me! What's the normalization? How has data been rescaled? That can affect __a lot__ how visually correlated two datasets appear.

zakk··on US billionaire helped to back Brexit
Rich people backing political causes? Is it something new?
zakk··on Reddit Is Being Manipulated by Big Financial Services Companies
I've heard a lot of theories about Reddit, but nothing about HFT. Do you have any link/source?
zakk··on Reddit Is Being Manipulated by Big Financial Services Companies
> I know that stormfront regularly organizes brigades and disseminates talking points to disrupt conversation on Reddit

Any proof of this?

I am a bit skeptical of right-wing astroturfing/brigading having happened on Reddit, because it would have been a total and utter failure, given that Reddit is really left-leaning these days, even in non-political subs.

zakk··on Reddit Is Being Manipulated by Big Financial Services Companies
So why is he calling President Trump 45?

HN is a place for serious discussion, I think we should call people by their name.

zakk··on Reddit Is Being Manipulated by Big Financial Services Companies
45?
zakk··on Ask HN: What're the best-designed things you've ever used?
Regarding chopsticks and one-handed eating: you could do the same with a fork, as long as the food is already cut in small bites, like Asian food usually is.

On the other hand you cannot eat a steak with one hand, neither with chopsticks nor with a fork.

I think that the good design is in the food, rather than in the chopsticks.

zakk··on Universities admit students who are 'almost illiterate', lecturers warn
You are assuming that (nearly) everyone, given a good secondary education, is able to become university material.
zakk··on Mark Zuckerberg: Building Global Community
Not so easy, when your friends are on Facebook, often the only feasible way of advertising your business is on Facebook, if you are an artist everyone will ask for a FB page, many services integrate with Facebook.
zakk··on Universities admit students who are 'almost illiterate', lecturers warn
The same headlines in Italy, last time a couple of weeks ago. And still the European Union calls for a higher percentage of university students.

I have come to the conclusion that not everyone is fit for higher education, unless we lower the bar.

zakk··on In Just 5 Moves, Grandmaster Loses and Leaves Chess World Aghast
No, it's not, someone is simply rude and talks over everyone. A rude person will talk over men, women (without being sexist), black people (without being racist), etc.

Either you demonstrate that the arrogance is specifically targeted towards women and because they are women, or you cannot speak of sexism.

zakk··on In Just 5 Moves, Grandmaster Loses and Leaves Chess World Aghast
What you describe is being rude and bad-mannered. Being rude to a woman is not automatically being sexist.
zakk··on Hyper – A terminal emulator based on JavaScript, HTML and CSS
You will take my terminal to run it through a browser from my cold, dead hands.
zakk··on FetLife Announcement
> The main evidence is to take these companies at their word instead of assuming they're trying to cover something up.

I'm not implying that the are trying to cover something up, but it just seems absurd to me that a payment company may be liable for what its customer are doing, and I would like some clear, circumstantial evidence of that.

The laws you are referring to prosecute whoever detains, distributes, sells, imports, mails, transfers obscene material.

However I cannot see how payments providers can be liable, can you produce some evidence in this direction?

I am not a lawyer, but it seems to me that the payment provider is no more guilty that the electric company powering the servers.

zakk··on FetLife Announcement
> How is your proposal to regulate what private sector social media companies are required to publish any different in substance than a (clearly unconstitutional) proposal to regulate what private sector newspapers can and cannot publish?

I am talking about service providers, not users.

Suppose there's only one printing house in town and within a 1000 km radius. This de facto monopoly means that if you are denied their services you cannot publish a book.

My proposal is: we should mandate that the service provider (i.e. the printing house) provides the same services for the same price to all customers.

Of course that would require a definition of who will be considered a service provider, but I think that the FetLife controversy clearly shows that some freedoms are being endangered: outside the Internet no monopoly/oligopoly is so strong that can send virtually anyone out of business in a matter of a week.

zakk··on FetLife Announcement
Do you have any evidence that payment processing companies are dropping business customers because they fear lawsuits?
