zakk··on Ellen Pao: My lawsuit failed. Others won’t
> "rightful reasons"

Not according to the judge.

You may say they were rightful, and many people are discussing it.

But at the same time you have to understand that a person trained and appointed to determine if the reasons are rightful, said they are not.

That's were the story started to have two sides.

zakk··on Ellen Pao: My lawsuit failed. Others won’t
I think it's clear that the other side of the story is a concept that applies chiefly to controversial stories. And this story is extremely controverial.

No wonder people rightfully remind there's another side.

zakk··on Steve Bannon Wants to Change How the Law Treats Google
Indeed, separating Facebook as is would be close to impossible.

However, a first step would be imposing FB to expose all features and user data using an open protocol to be defined.

That would be a good thing on its own, given that it would make possible for other networks to federate with Facebook. (And when you think about it, it's much closer to the usual Internet, think of SMTP, BGP... A monolithic service like FB is actually the exception!)

Moreover, it would set the ground for splitting Facebook into two (or possibily more) federated networks.

zakk··on Where’s all my CPU and memory gone? The answer: Slack
Yes I have, and I have used interfaces which were as rich, or even richer, for decades, without the need of embedding web content.

For instance GTK apps in the earlies 2000s were easily displaying content as rich.

zakk··on Where’s all my CPU and memory gone? The answer: Slack
Since when you need a web browser to display content?

Slack could easily use native widgets, without embedding any HTML.

> since when is a lack of comments in the body of a method a good thing?

I think that's the rationale: you are supposed to explain what you do, not how you do it. The function is short enough that a global comment is enough.

I agree with you, that a couple of comments in the function body wouldn't have hurt.

I like Rust, but I hate with a passion the borrow system. So I was looking for an unsafe-by-default Rust and I found D, thanks to the suggestion of a kind HN user. I must admit that I love it!

zakk··on Madrid cracks down on 'manspreading' on public transport
Yes, the repeated, systematic usage of a sexist slur makes me sick.
zakk··on Madrid cracks down on 'manspreading' on public transport
People may invade your personal space for many reasons: because they are taller than average, because they may be commuting for a long time and need to move their legs a bit, because they simply forgot or think about something else, because they come from different cultures with a different culture of what is personal space (try using public transportation in Beijing and then in Tokyo), or because they are assholes.

I think that we can just try to be humans and ask, it's not really a big deal. As I said even eye contact is enough most often, is it so difficult.

There's no need to start a war, leave along a pointless, sexist war like the proponents of the term "manspreading" are doing.

I am wondering why the GNU version uses

zakk··on Madrid cracks down on 'manspreading' on public transport
The point is that this feminist trend of sticking a "man" label over common problems makes me sick. It's unnecessarily confrontational, just like your comment.

And btw yes, the problem, as it is described by the sexist slur "manspreading", exists just in a feminist's mind.

In my experience men and women are equally represented among assholes. I'm glad you shared your different personal experience, though.

zakk··on The electric car has dropped out of favor in Denmark
Is there clear evidence that this reasoning justifies such a ginormous tax rate?

It looks to me a lot about the story that if you run, you'll sweat. If you sweat, you'll take a cold. If you take a cold, you'll sneeze. If you sneeze, you'll catch pneumonia. And if you catch pneumonia you'll die. So don't run.

zakk··on Madrid cracks down on 'manspreading' on public transport
I am much taller than average, way above the 99th percentile. On public transportation and on planes, as a matter of fact, I occupy more space than most people. Sometimes seats are designed so that I cannot help but invade someone else's space. Usually it takes just a second a tiny bit of common sense to ask someone to move a bit. Most often just eye contact is enough.

On the other hand I saw my fair share of jackasses on public transportation (feet over a seat, bringing in bikes during peak hours when it is explicitly forbidden, screaming on phone, drinking beer and then throwing the can on the floor, occupying more than one seat) and -- surprise surprise -- males and females were equally represented among jackasses.

This feminist trend of making up problems and sticking a "male" label on it really makes me sick!

zakk··on The electric car has dropped out of favor in Denmark
I am skeptical that a 180% tax on fuel-powered cars is good policy, however I can see the point given that Denmark is extremely concerned about the environment.

That said, I think that the same bracket on electric cars is a truly draconian measure.

zakk··on Comey's opening remarks [pdf]
User are encouraged to flag content the judge off-topic. And the definition of off-topic is quite broad:

On-Topic: Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity.

Probably people don't find their intellectual curiosity gratified by the umpteenth post about Trump. Also consider that many users are not American.

zakk··on “Let her speak please”
No good reason for being sexist, in my opinion. Even assuming you are right, two wrongs (or two sexisms) do not make a right.
zakk··on “Let her speak please”
You miss the point: as you note, there's a sexist behaviour observed in some men. You have to choose a word to describe this behaviour. If you choose a word that suggests that a whole category has that certain behaviour, then you are being sexist.

Let me show that with a simple example.

Some women are always complaining and whining. You have to find a word for this behaviour. If you choose a word (femmwhining, maybe?) that implies that all women are always complaining and whining, then you are being sexist.

zakk··on EC: An Expressive and Intuitive, C Style Object-Oriented Programming Language
I was well aware of the existence of D, however I always thought of it as an extension of C++, so being more complex and more bloated.

Clearly I was wrong, and I spent the last hour playing with D!

Many thanks for your advice!

zakk··on EC: An Expressive and Intuitive, C Style Object-Oriented Programming Language
I have been looking for a long time for a C-like language, with a small number of object-oriented features and support for some functional primitives.

The closer I got is Rust, but I really hate the borrow system, I suppose I could program in unsafe Rust.

The alternative is C++, which feels too broad and complex, so I am sticking to C.
