zakember··on Poll: Switching from WhatsApp
If that can't happen, companies are better off forking Signal's code and making their own variant.
zakember··on Poll: Switching from WhatsApp
Out of curiosity, what do you use to communicate with friends / distant family members when you have to?

Most of my WhatsApp use has been to stay in touch with friends / families. Planning trips is almost impossible without WhatsApp for me and my groups.

zakember··on Poll: Switching from WhatsApp
Totally missed opportunity for RCS IMHO. If RCS was available worldwide (I believe it is mostly still US only) along with encryption, it would have been the obvious choice for most people by now since it would allow users to use their favorite (RCS supported) app
zakember··on Ask HN: Predictions for 2021?
> India might experience one or two major terrorist attacks.

I am very curious to know what made you predict this

Any resources you can suggest to point interested engineers in the right direction?
zakember··on GPT-3 Has Learned to Code, Blog and Argue
Nope. That part is outsourced to humans.
zakember··on No, you couldn't have made more money than the Twitter hacker
The reason why (I think) this was less likely to work was because of haste.

The hackers knew their tweets would be pulled down in a few minutes or so, so they had to put out tweets saying "in the next 30 mins" for people to send money immediately.

This works well in what they tried, but asking people to donate in the next 30 mins would certainly have made it look suspicious.

zakember··on My dad got scammed for $3k worth of gift cards
> Perhaps Target could should spend some of their data collection techniques on this instead of trying to figure out if your daughter is pregnant so they can send you maternity coupons.

Why though? One makes them money and the other... also makes them money but by doing nothing about it

zakember··on Parsing city of origin and destination city from a string
"I will personally pay $100 to anyone who can make this without a bug and passes every case out there. But if they take up the offer and fail, they have to pay me $1000"
zakember··on How Do I Get Rid of Search Results from India?
Just add '-site:quora.com' to your search query to avoid Quora altogether
zakember··on Visa is planning the biggest changes to merchant fees in a decade
Pardon my ignorance, but where you are from (assuming Finland), what do people use to pay for big amounts?

Like buying a house or a car?

zakember··on France fines Apple €25M for iOS software that slowed down older iPhones
Everyone keeps talking about how Apple is only being sued for €25M which is a small amount for them, but no one is talking about the fact that France cannot have different fine amounts for different companies based on the company's profitability.

They are expected to fine a standard amount based on a certain case and this amount should be big enough for all companies to avoid the thing in future, but at the same time not bankrupt the company either.

zakember··on What can you use instead of Google and Facebook?
I would assume that while they don't tie your search with your username (when you turn it off), they would still store it anonymously to your location, IP address, browser, etc. to 'improve their results using Machine Learning'.

Theoretically, this could be used to identify you if all those parameters were unique to you

zakember··on Ask HN: A New Decade. Any Predictions?
I think companies would fall back to OTPs to fix this situation

zakember··on Ask HN: To fight or not to fight piracy?
Try getting paid for ur app using ads instead. Making it free this way for the users would be a win-win situation for all. I don't know if this is possible on iPhone and iPad apps or not, but thats how some jar games on my Nokia phone work, so I'm guessing that should be an option for you too. You could post on your app's website (if u've any) that any interested advertisers can contact you if they wish to advertise using ur app :-)
