zajio1am··on Spain orders blocks on Archive.today and its mirrors
This terminology change is mostly limited to anglosphere. Outside of that 'liberal' is still commonly used for economic-right low-intervention position.
zajio1am··on Spain orders blocks on Archive.today and its mirrors
Depends on country. Here in Czechia, Communist party is one of most socially conservative one, while conservative christian party is center-left economically. Social democratic party, when it was relevant, was also pretty socially conservative, which makes sense considering their working class demigraphics.
zajio1am··on I don't want to read what you didn't write
That would be true if there is only one receiver and if i could exactly predict how the receiver would interpret these 300 bits. But i could use LLM to expand these 300 bits to 1000 bits of more explicit information that gives enough redundancy and context that minimizes risk of misunderstanding and increase easiness of understanding, then validate such expanded message (and possibly do iterative corrections if LLM did not understand those 300 bits correctly), and finally release expanded message to (potentially large and heterogenous) group of receivers.
zajio1am··on The Effect of CRTs on Pixel Art (2024)
> I remember these transition points, so I can say definitively that there was a time when we thought the newer stuff was indeed an improvement.

Exactly. Around 1999, I switched from 17" CRT to 14" LCD, as the sharpness of the LCD was breathtaking and made up for the smaller screen size.

zajio1am··on The Effect of CRTs on Pixel Art (2024)
Note that classical pixel art was not necessary particularly fat/blocky. Since SVGA become common, games like SimCity 2000 or Transport Tycoon Deluxe run in 640x480 on 14" CRT, which is ~60 DPI. Later (in second half of 1990s), higher resolution became common, but also higher screen sizes, so DPI was in 70-80 range. That is not really that different from full HD on 24" LCD (~92 DPI), which dominated later era.
zajio1am··on Jabber/XMPP: How Do We Gain Traction?
I have no problem with that with XMPP. Conversations automatically reconnects after each switch within few seconds, so it is transparent for users. On IRC that is huge pain, true.
zajio1am··on Jabber/XMPP: How Do We Gain Traction?
I use XMPP (with OMEMO) extensively and my main problem with it is absence of some basic key trust chains and bad handling of group chats

1) With OMEMO, each client/device of a user has its own key, but there is no trust relationship between them or some common master key. I can verify and trust counterparty key, but then counterparty adds another client/device and i have to do manual verification again.

2) Group chats do not have group key, but one encrypt messages for each group member (pairwise), which means that everybody has to do key exchange with everybody. This does not scale, especially with 1), which means that even if membership is stable, new keys may appear. Some clients (Conversations) do not allow to send message to a group when they do not know some keys of some group members/devices, which is fail situation that happen pretty often.

zajio1am··on Don't Use a gmail.com Address
None/negligible. It was ISP in Czechia, about 50% was @seznam.cz, 15% together two smaller local freemails, 10% @gmail.com, 25% individual/unique domains.
zajio1am··on Don't Use a gmail.com Address
When i worked in small ISP, i did some stats on customer accounts (about 2k customers) and only about 10% was @gmail.com. But it was 5 years ago and in EU.
zajio1am··on True Rate of Unemployment
Why? Here, being registered has significant benefits (direct benefits and health insurance paid by state) and minimal costs (once a month visiting labor bureau, doing some minimal effort) that only people i know that are unemployed and not being registered are ones with psychiatric conditions.
zajio1am··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
Well, loss of (control over) shared narrative was one of complains of the Church against the printing press ...
zajio1am··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
> AI will kill the internet because it is killing the incentive to make it.

You could make the same argument for Wikipedia (that webs get less traffic if people get their answers from Wikipedia article returned as the first from web search, which is based on internet sources).

zajio1am··on The Dunning-Kruger effect may just be a data artefact (2020)
The replication crisis is not limited to psychology, that was just the first area where it was noted. I saw some meta-study comparing multiple social sciences and according to it replication failure in sociology and educational science was even worse than in psychology.
zajio1am··on Wikimedia Foundation refuses union recognition, hires union-busting law firm
And now the union is an organization whose sole purpose is to ensure that management cannot do anything with it (as any significant reduction of expenses means significant reduction of workforce).
zajio1am··on Long Range Wi-Fi – Pushing 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi to the limits (2019)
When we started wireless ISP in in early 200x, it was common to run 2.4 GHz links with 5+ km distance, having 24 dB antennas on each side. with the basic 17 dBm radio one was 20 dB over EIRP limit...

Here in Czechia, there was also another unlicensed band, 10.5 GHz, that has more sensible regulation - instead of EIRP limit, there was PA limit (power before antenna). So one can do long-range links with large enough antennas and most long range links was later converted to these. Unfortunately as this is local unlicensed band, radios for that were orders of magnitude pricier than generic wifi.

zajio1am··on Protecting our FLOSS commons from LLMs
I agree that they are fully within their rights to decide how they want to run services they provide. However, i do not think it shields such decisions from public criticism.

If they were some random corporation making business decision, everybody would have an opinion about it and express it, not just say 'it is reasonable according to majority of board/shareholders and that is only thing that matter.'

zajio1am··on Judge approves $1.5B Anthropic settlement for pirated books used to train Claude
Civil justice is primarily about restoring damages, not about punishing wrongdoing (although common law in US it is more punitive than civil law in european countries). Therefore compensations are based on damages, not on profit from wrongdoings.
zajio1am··on LG monitors silently install software through Windows Update without consent
Not making the specific decision (showing ads) but making the general decision (giving power to Microsoft). Blaming customers for buying MS products is not really much different than blaming Trump voters for voting for him. In both cases risks were obvious beforehand.
zajio1am··on Who's running all those tiny RPKI servers?
Also note that ASPA validation prevents only hijack by peers and customers, not by providers. Due to way how ASPA validation works, providers could always announce to their customers routes with valid-looking AS PATH with hijacked ASN appended at its end.
zajio1am··on Who's running all those tiny RPKI servers?
Note that the first hop has to publish both ROA and ASPA records, as ASPA records describes a set of valid providers.
zajio1am··on Ask HN: Is GitHub preparing to go behind a login wall?
No, it is pretty much the same, both means agreeing to a contract.

It is not really much different than paying for cleaning, the cleaning person also sees inside of house.
zajio1am··on Renting a sewing machine from the library
At least in EU, private book/media rental is not legal without special licensing from copyright holders, while public libraries have exception for this.
zajio1am··on Renting a sewing machine from the library
Tool rental is a service that is commonly provided by private sector. I do not see a reason why this should be provided by a government. This seems like unfair competition to e.g. community hackerspaces.

Yes, but EU would have to convince Google and Apple to get a new root certificate to browsers.

50% property tax is just seizure without compensation, which is generally considered human rights violation.

If government wants 50% of shares, it can just buy it (or expropriate it with compensation) and use its ability to get cheap long-term loans to finance it.
