zaius··on The Complete Guide to HTTP/2 with HAProxy and Nginx
It was - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11217477

I guess people paint with a broad brush based on their experience. nginx is a pretty fantastic piece of software - it runs a significant proportion of the web. nginx retries put / post requests if the application server times out. This quirk can be dangerous if you don't know about it, and nginx really should allow you to configure it, but it can be patched, and only affects you if you have multiple application servers.

zaius··on Go vs. Swift vs. C++ microbenchmark
I'm guessing s/he's misreading your bio line in your profile.
zaius··on Ooc – a small programming language that compiles to C99
This is a really interesting idea. I'm surprised this is the first language I've heard of that targets C. C's major strength is portability, but that means change is slow. When browsers stagnated, coffeescript filled the void, which in turn influenced new versions of javascript.

A certain subset of C++ seems to solve a lot of peoples' problems with C, but it also seems there's no consensus on what that subset is. So people stick with C because at least the rules are defined. Compile-to-C languages like this could have all the benefit of switching to C++ without the downsides

zaius··on Ember.js 2.0 Released
I just finished getting this working - if you clone that branch there is an example ember-cli app inside tests that has some examples which are great starting points.
zaius··on To End Soccer Riots, Brazilian Club Forces Fans to Sit Next to Rivals
The jigsaw technique is a cool hack. I'd never heard of it. And yep, you should post it. Random wikipedia articles like that make it to the front page all the time.
zaius··on ES7 Array and Generator comprehensions
They're simple examples that fit into one line. The difference is more notable on longer chains. I think people currently avoid this block style[1] syntax in JS because it's verbose. Arrow functions fix that.

[1] Again, not sure of the correct term for this - functional style?

zaius··on ES7 Array and Generator comprehensions
While I really like comprehensions, as soon as you need a conditional, or any level of nesting, you pretty much have to break it out into a loop to keep it readable.

OTOH, block syntax (I don't think that's the correct term for it) has always irked me in JS, due to verbose function declaration, and no implicit return. So beautiful syntax in ruby like:

    some_array.map { |el| el.length }
    # Or the succinct version:
    some_array.map(&:length)
Looks like this in JS:

    someArray.map(function() { return this.length; });
Now that ES6 has arrow functions with implicit returns, we can do this:

    someArray.map( s => s.length );
Since both comprehensions and implicit return functions are being released around the same time, I'll be interested to see which of the two gets more adoption.
zaius··on ES7 Array and Generator comprehensions
You can use it now if you preprocess with babel - https://babeljs.io/
zaius··on Solved by Flexbox
Also worth mentioning that you can avoid having to deal with most of the problems of the multiple syntaxes if you're using sass by using bourbon's mixins - http://bourbon.io/docs/#flexbox (or you can just not care about < IE11...)
zaius··on [dead]
Maybe I'm just feeding the trolls here, but why? He wasn't hiding it. I can see a disclaimer needed for something that's open to bias like "competitor X sucks and beyond is way better", but just for saying he likes what we've done?

He had nothing to do with this fundraise, he's had nothing to do with the product so far. He saw the link on HN, said he thinks it's great. I hired him because he thinks it's great.

zaius··on [dead]
I submit lots of stories about my co to HN. Most of them get no votes or comments. If I had "sockpuppets" I hope I'd have a better track record.
zaius··on [dead]
Kam started with us 2 days ago. If he didn't think it's a great idea and a great product, then I would be pretty sure I'd hired the wrong person.
zaius··on RancherOS: An OS for Docker Containers
Regarding the "Ideal for Production" tagline - how would I go about running this in production? Specifically on linode - would I have to run a "regular" linux and then use kvm to run the rancheros iso?
zaius··on Twitter CEO: 'We suck at dealing with abuse'
I think Reddit is really interesting in this respect - you have pro skub and anti skub subreddits sitting side by side. Yes, they get caught up in downvote brigading and whatnot, but battles aren't the status quo like on twitter.

On reddit, the subreddits you subscribe to are your choice, but if the groups of users on twitter are homogenous enough then I wonder if you could automate siloing of users. People with correlated behavior get moved into their own silos and then if you or other users in your silo block a person, they don't show up in your feed.

zaius··on PostgreSQL’s New LATERAL Join Type
I'm a huge believer in postgres' json store, but anything above the basic queries can get a bit messy. Lateral joins really clean up aggregate data queries on json columns. E.g.

        SELECT id, COUNT(keys)
        FROM users,
          LATERAL json_object_keys(login_history) keys
        GROUP BY id;

zaius··on C3.js: D3-based reusable chart library
I just switched a project from dimple to c3. Dimple's requirements for data organization were very rigid and it was extremely slow on datasets more than a couple MB. Docs are sub-par for both but c3's examples were much more relevant and understandable (at least for my case).
zaius··on How the Napa Earthquake Affected Bay Area Sleepers
Interesting data. Some things that jumped out at me:

1. Apparently everyone in Santa Cruz goes to bed early and gets up early.

2. I would have expected bigger jumps on the hour. Maybe I'm the only one that sets my alarm on the hour though.

3. Why would there be dips in the AM? People hitting snooze perhaps?

4. How long do you have to moving for UP to think you're awake? How long do you have to be still for the UP to think you're asleep?

zaius··on Beyond Pricing – Automatic Dynamic Pricing for Airbnb
Yep we need to be a bit more explicit about that. Currently we're only in SF, but that should be changing very soon.

That said, you can preview the prices for a listing without logging in - click the "preview your listing" button on the demo page.

zaius··on Beyond Pricing – Automatic Dynamic Pricing for Airbnb
Apologies - I'm developing on firefox aurora and haven't had a chance to test it on older versions yet. I honestly wasn't prepared for a HN submission but some more cross browser testing and mobile testing are very high on my todo list.

This is my first project where I've developed with an IE10+ only policy, which is actually really nice because of flex box, but it's easy to accidentally break other browsers if you miss a single prefix.

zaius··on Beyond Pricing – Automatic Dynamic Pricing for Airbnb
Not yet... We don't price enough properties yet for it to make a significant change to city wide prices, but hopefully that's a problem we have to deal with.

zaius··on Firefox Dev Tools: Box model highlighter, Web Console improvements
I love the look of the font preview. One of my major gripes with web fonts and listing multiple sources is not knowing which font rule is actually applying. Looks like this might solve my problem.
zaius··on Show HN: Email Templating API
This is awesome. I have been half assed building an identical product for a while now, but I just can't stand dealing with html email templates. You will definitely have me as a customer for my next project. A couple thoughts:

1. The "with" in your logo is the same color as your links. Since your links aren't underlined, it makes the "with" look like a link. You should change the color of one of them.

2. The error message when I click 'execute command' without changing my email isn't obvious enough.

3. I want to see the editor. What is the interface the marketing team will see? Maybe put the template you are going to send next to that curl box.

4. Do you have decent html and responsive templates? If so, this is a selling point on its own.

zaius··on Show HN: Email Templating API
I imagine if your marketing team can write an ERB template, you don't need this. My current flow - marketing guy sends me an email saying "what does the 1 week follow up email say right now?". I send back the email. He sends back edits. I commit them and deploy.
