zadler··on We will see a completely new type of computer, says AI pioneer Geoff Hinton
But don’t worry; they say that they’re definitely _not_ going to build The Terminator.
zadler··on Apple blocks Coinbase Wallet
You’re suggesting that coinbase launched NFT support on its app so it could make a pittance in gas fees?
zadler··on The persistent and pervasive impact of bullying in childhood and adolescence
There isn’t one of these steps that bullied children are not doing that they could do to resolve their issue. If your point is that their issue could be solved with education; well maybe, maybe they need parenting also…
zadler··on The persistent and pervasive impact of bullying in childhood and adolescence
As well as that the parents of the victim are easier to deal with even when the child is damaged than the parents of the bullies. And the parents of the victim may also be complicit in the victim blaming. It’s absurd to think it’s something that could be fixed in a generation also.
zadler··on Ooh.directory
Love to see this
zadler··on Something New Is Brewing
Love the idea, sorely needed. Not sure about the name.
zadler··on Twitter's engineering workforce could be down by 90%
The way he’s acting is consistent with having flipflopped his way into the deal and resenting the whole thing slightly. He seems very worried about the money aspect. This fits with having tried to back out. If this is the case then he’ll need to get a handle on that.
zadler··on Twitter's engineering workforce could be down by 90%
I think that what you’re describing is a dogmatic / authoritarian leadership style, which in tech can signal incompetence, but that’s not neccesarily what Elon is doing. He is being demanding and brash, and somewhat arrogant.
zadler··on The Alternative Genesis Block of Bitcoin
Adam back wasn't late to the game, he was there in 1998.
zadler··on I am offering a $100k bounty to the person who sets me up with my life parter
But if they just want a child it’s kind of more manageable
zadler··on Bitcoin is largely controlled by a small group of investors and miners
Das Kapital?
zadler··on The New Thermodynamic Understanding of Clocks
The light is fundamental... without particles bouncing between planetary bodies there would be nothing keeping them in sync.

Thought experiment: imagine a box through which 0 information passes; no light, heat, radio waves nothing. There’s a clock in the box. Does the clocks progress reflect the progress of time outside the box?

No, because time is based on causality and in space that’s propagated largely by massless particles.

zadler··on Launch HN: Fella (YC W20) – Tackling men's obesity using medication and coaching
What’s the connection between stress eating and metabolic disease?
zadler··on SpaceX’s Starlink near-misses with other spacecraft are getting ‘out of control’
It’s also possible that starlink are somewhat neglecting their responsibility to keep appropriate distances between satellites because they find that financial risk acceptable and want to signal to other operators that they should get out of the way. Essentially a game of chicken where Starlink has the upper hand because a loss is not such a problem for them.
zadler··on Poly Network hacker returns $258M after stealing $600M
Of course they are going to cry foul but they don’t have a legal right to get their money back so there very much is a point.
zadler··on Faster CRDTs: An Adventure in Optimization
And let’s face it, anything is better than writing JavaScript.
zadler··on The daunting task of writing longhand and why you should do it
Like film cameras.
zadler··on The mermaid is taking over Google search in Norway
We seem to be approaching a point where it could be worthwhile to get a distributed index involved even if it is very slow and inefficient to update.
zadler··on The mermaid is taking over Google search in Norway
Said it before and I’ll say it again, when Reddit finally becomes inaccesible via searches we will have lost a huge and very useful database of succinct information.
zadler··on A shift in American family values is fueling estrangement
Though it’s unclear if they are no contact because they have no appreciation for what their parents might be going through (since they don’t yet have kids) or if their parents are just too toxic to deal with at all (perhaps contributing to their not having kids).
zadler··on Dutch official calls for complete ban on Bitcoin
Not a lot of stuff is bought directly with gold either. Itd’d be more like banning gold, except harder to enforce.
zadler··on History of the Nautilus loudspeaker
Curious to know what you would recommend sub $500.
zadler··on Amazon refused to refund $7k after shipping an empty box instead of a Sony A1
The problem is not lack of tech, it’s that consumers are easier to attract to a platform than vendors so the rules tend to favor the vendors.
zadler··on Trials begin on lozenge that rebuilds tooth enamel
Is it safe? I’ve read that it might cause bone loss and the long term safety has not been established.
zadler··on Mars Helicopter Lands Safely After Serious In-Flight Anomaly
I don’t think the article mentions whether or not they can update the code remotely. Can they patch it?

Edit: appears so: https://astronomynow.com/2021/04/11/nasa-delays-mars-helicop...

zadler··on Google is going to turn on 2FA by default
Isn’t it great how they will let you sign up for an account with just a password then demand a phone number later on when you’re already using it.
zadler··on Google is going to turn on 2FA by default
It asked me for a secret question and answer when I signed up years ago. Didn’t make any difference though.
zadler··on Google is going to turn on 2FA by default
I never agreed to this insane 4 factor authentication. I feel like google has locked me out just to reduce costs on its end.
zadler··on Google is going to turn on 2FA by default
Tried to log into an old gmail account recently.

Did not have access to associated phone number.

* gave correct password * gave correct secret question response * have access to backup email address

“Thank you for verifying that you have access to the backup email address.

We have been unable to verify your ownership of this account”

Are you serious?? Google must seriously want to tie everything to real world IDs.

zadler··on I’ve had the same supper for 10 years
Still, it’s hard to justify a grouse signaling a coming death by sitting on top of a house. That is magic to us at this point and such a tale would usually be met with skepticism. The things about the weather I don’t have much of a problem with.
