zachrose··on Reverse Engineering Bumble’s API (2020)
Download the Charles app on your iPhone, turn it on, use the app you’re interested in, then look at Charles to see what network calls the app made while you were using it.
zachrose··on Tell HN: SMS-based two-factor authentication is not secure
SMS 2FA isn’t secure, but what about a small retail/delivery business that uses SMS as the only means of authentication?

Payment is not done over SMS but separately through cash or Venmo, so it seems like the worst that could happen is a delivery gets nefariously ordered for someone who didn’t want it.

zachrose··on Etsy to buy fashion reseller Depop for $1.63B
To think that one day Etsy was one of those businesses, and now they have $1.63B to spend on the new thing
zachrose··on The history of lab leaks
The Nicholson Baker piece published several months ago made a compelling but not watertight case to me, a non-expert.

zachrose··on Why does every advert look the same? Corporate Memphis
Marshall McLuhan said something along the lines of the development of linear perspective in the Renaissance ushering in a world that had at last a single point of view. I’ll give Rudnick some rope.
zachrose··on Beyond Meat’s Beyond Burger life cycle assessment (2018)
I agree, but also find joy in the larger “burger experience” (toppings, bun, fries, soda, presentation, etc). I hope I’m not the only one.
zachrose··on Why we switched from Webpack to Vite
> But the decision to avoid actually writing javascript at all costs

Who's JavaScript is it anyway? ES7? ES6? Internet Explorer 11's? How do you isolate things for the sake of unit tests and then bring them together into a performant build?

zachrose··on Show HN: Paletter – Create Professional Color Palettes from a Single Color
But it seems like there's a lot more that goes into making a palette specifically for user interfaces: https://design.gs.com/news/color
zachrose··on 2021 Williams F1 Computational Fluid Dynamics
It seems to me that the aerodynamic picture of an F1 car would also have to account for all the air getting sucked into the engine and blown out the exhaust, no?
zachrose··on Manhattan DA says his office to stop prosecuting prostitution

zachrose··on Americans overwhelmingly say marijuana should be legal
Still though you’re right, those industries still don’t have has much clout as medical insurance
zachrose··on Americans overwhelmingly say marijuana should be legal
No entrenched industries except for alcohol, private prisons, medical cannabis and big pharma.
zachrose··on US bosses now earn 312 times the average worker's wage, figures show (2018)

zachrose··on Git as a NoSql Database (2016)
A lot of this was really cleared up for me by Evan Czaplicki's documentation for the Elm time library: https://github.com/elm/time
zachrose··on Why America's prisons are an unconstitutional moral horror (2019)
Would it still be unethical if your client was supportive of the larger strategy?

If your client were unaware of the strategy, would it be unethical to tell them?

zachrose··on Git as a NoSql Database (2016)
Except that ISO-8601 doesn’t include anything as useful as a political time zone, just an offset from UTC. That’d be good if UTC offset was useful for anything, but instead it just adds to the confusion.
zachrose··on Why America's prisons are an unconstitutional moral horror (2019)
Why doesn’t one do this?

Because it exposes their individual clients to greater risk?

zachrose··on NASA completes engine test firing of moon rocket on 2nd try
Took me a second to realize he said this before the election. Whew.
zachrose··on Earth’s magnetic field broke down 42k years ago, caused sudden climate change
Hmm. Something like, "humanity serves humans, not the other way around." If there are no humans around to enjoy the fruits of humanity, I don't assume that something is lost or wasted.

The problem I have with the "eggs in a basket" line of thinking is that it raises extreme moral hazard to say we don't have to care about everyone as long as a few people are saved. Losing a basket of billions of eggs to save a dozen is cold comfort.

(Yes, I realize magnetic pole reversal isn't the same as nuclear holocaust, but I still don't feel my scepticism is misplaced.)

zachrose··on Earth’s magnetic field broke down 42k years ago, caused sudden climate change
I never understand this sentiment. I get that "we" is "the human species" but in practice it just means "some people." A magnetic pole reversal would be nobody's fault, but knowing that some humans survived off-planet wouldn't make me feel better about it.
zachrose··on We are starting to operate our CNC machines remotely
What was this company? That sounds amazing.

zachrose··on Robert Caro and Kurt Vonnegut interview each other (1999)
I recently finished the audiobooks for The Years of Lyndon Johnson. It was 14 months of on-and-off routine listening.

The thing about these books is not only that they're about a famous person, but that they also are about a person that left a huge paper trail, was extremely social, and died young, leaving lots of people who remembered Johnson and were eventually willing to tell the unflattering stories of his youth. In this way it would stand alone as an incredible literary or investigative portrait of a person. The fact that it covers the central political developments of the United States in the 20th Century is just icing on the cake.

zachrose··on Big O Notation – Explained as easily as possible
I appreciate that the author was specific about “if you count addition as 1 operation.” Without saying this, it’s not obvious that the notation is such a simplified abstraction over operations and their costs, with all the limitations that come with that simplification.
zachrose··on Mexico is moving to legalize cannabis in 2021
> They're already involved in legal cannabis industry in the USA anyway.

How so?
