But I think you strike on the point that big problems are relative. To me a huge problem is the lack of tech scene in my new area I've moved to, yet only a few hours away is a bustling one. But to most people that's a tiny problem.
If you're talking about ones that affect everyone, there are at least a few startups that I can name off by head (though mostly stealth) that are tackling big problems. It's quite an over-arching statement to suggest he knows every startup's mission.
The truth is from what I can gather and what this posts says, they're very passionate people. They don't want their name attached to a half-baked product. Nor do they want to deal with it anymore. It makes a lot of businesses sense to deal with things they ARE passionate about. $75k is small change. They don't need the hassle.
They have their own in-house development team. I can bet you we've not come anywhere close to that and the site is absolutely HUGE.
I suspect somewhere someone was given this as a budget and they had to spend it, or lose it.
I currently work in a designer studio and I'll be introducing everyone to Git soon. But most designers I know have some programming knowledge (for implementing) and would be able to use Git :)
The first line about people no longer trusting Paypal. People haven't trusted Paypal for many years, but used them anyway.

Not saying cyanogen is evil, or that these are unusual or unreasonable, or even missing the point about how carrier bloatware will inevitably lead to truly evil things like Carrier IQ. It's hard to get away from this kind of crap these days. The irony just struck me, that's all."
I think a lot of people are taking people's anti-spec to be very black and white, especially from the email and private communication i've received from this. :)
However, I think we had the issue that Lloyds Cardnet wouldn't play nice with SagePay as it didn't do 3D-Secure. I could be wrong though.
And thank you for your offer. :)
I'm whining about my problems because I know countless others have had the same issue. I want to incite discussion on what problems people should expect to face and how they can go about it. So others can learn.
However, Cardnet is a separate entity to Lloyds technically and that's how they saw it.
I've recently come back to the UK from living abroad so I have been rebuilding contacts.
But you are correct; networking is incredibly important.
