zachinglis··on On sexism in the tech industry - rebuttal
Basically; I copy edited this article once she was done so I'm biased. But I do agree the rashness didn't help. HOWEVER! She was planning on writing something like this for many months. In the long run, I think a calmer article would have helped her but I absolutely agree with what she has to say.

I'm really disappointed you decided to use phrases like "Laura The Troll."

It's funny. Those who've disagreed with Laura have come down to name calling and such.

Faruk's a good guy. But because he worked for Apple means nothing. Absolutely squat. If you judge people's worth on who they've worked for, then that's worrying. It's not who you've worked for - it's what you've done (Modernizr was a good link in this.) I know many Googler's, Appler's who spend a lot of time writing minor code for example.

But how does working for Apple and writing Modenizr qualify him to speak about sexism? That's got nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Laura's not the only person who's expressed this view. Many people in the comemnts have agreed (and disagreed)

I think it doesn't say volumes about the sexist attitudes. It says volumes that people agree with her more. I'm sorry it doesn't fit in your belief box, but that doesn't make it trolling, nor does it make it wrong.

Rape and sexism are not the same thing.

Rape is genderless. Despite the fact that rape happens more to women, it happens to both genders.

Secondly, just because someone is sexist it doesn't correlate to whether they're rapists or not. Sexism is about ignorance, rape is about many things often anger or control.

If you mention rape any time someone says "I get paid less because I'm a girl", it sensationalizes it. It's like mentioning slavery, every time someone says "I'm only paid minimum wage"

zachinglis··on On sexism in the tech industry - rebuttal
I'm confused. She's not allowed to call herself a girl?
zachinglis··on On sexism in the tech industry - rebuttal
I know both the writers very well.

Faruk and I have known each other for 8 years, we tried to start a business together and I have a lot of respect for him.

Laura is my flatmate and best friend.

They tried to talk on Twitter beforehand, and it wasn't going very well (as Twitter does.)

She wanted to write a post on sexism for a very long while now. This was a catalyst to finally get it done. She also wanted it to be public so people got a full view of the opinions.

I, as a man, feel if I don't agree with posts like Faruk's, a lot of people take it as I don't care about women's rights. It can get messy easily.

Her opinions were not destructive in my opinion. She was frustrated that yet another man was telling all us what sexism was and that she felt his intentions weren't necessarily good, but more "holier than thou" and that it didn't help anything.

I have biases, so take it with a grain of salt.

While I (and she) do agree that she's not the best person to represent women in tech (she says so herself) a lot of people who have been do agree in the comments, and she does work with a big company that does development (.net, Windows Phone work, design and everything else in between too in a giant open plan office. So she does see more than you'd initially think)
zachinglis··on On sexism in the tech industry - rebuttal
Aggressive behavior will get you nowhere. ESPECIALLY because of your earlier post.

This is not against men having a view. But a woman is far more likely to understand sexism AGAINST women - because of (shock horror) being women.

zachinglis··on On sexism in the tech industry - rebuttal
You'd be surprised. A lot of people took the original post as gospel. Some because if they didn't, they'd be labelled against women. (It's a sort-of mob mentality.)
zachinglis··on On sexism in the tech industry - rebuttal
So you think posts like this shouldn't be on HN, but comments like this should be? That's not the Hacker News I love.

What a useless comment.

If you actually read it, it's against over the top feminism.

zachinglis··on Ruby vs. Python
Another Ruby vs Python post. I wrote a few about 4 years ago, and so has everyone else. It seems to be a Rubyist/Pythonist's version of a Bar Mitzvah.
zachinglis··on Bootstrap Toggle Buttons
I'm mixed on using these buttons. I've seen people in user research tests use them well, and then I've seen people use them horribly in such a situation too. However, there are times when they're perfectly acceptable.

I've forked and pull requested.

The background states were light at the top and darker at the bottom giving a button feel, rather than an inset feel. :)

zachinglis··on Bootstrap Toggle Buttons
Isn't that against the point of Bootstrap? The fact Bootstrap is opinionated is what makes it's rapid development.
zachinglis··on Announcing the First Beta Release of Persona
That intro video really doesn't explain much. I know it takes 15 minutes to integrate into my site, and works with any browser, but I have no idea why I truly want to spend those 15 minutes doing so.
zachinglis··on RIM CEO: We want to be the number three platform on the market
Reach for the stars, RIM. Reach for the stars!
zachinglis··on Github redesigns Profiles
Less information? I can now understand people's projects far quicker, and read information about them far quicker.

As both a designer, and a programer, neither side of me has complaints. It's much cleaner and very much a step in the right direction.

Just because you're not fumbling to say what a beautiful new change it is, I am betting without realising it will make your life easier.

People don't like change.

zachinglis··on App Store Bit Rot
As much as I agree that Apple should keep support, I am not upset they're not keeping support for a phone from 2007. We live in an age where most people replace there phone every 1-2 years. 3 at a very big stretch.

While you may not replace your phone that often, a very large majority do.

zachinglis··on IPod nano: Lumia ripoff? :)
I was in Apple's corner for the Samsung debacle, but seems they're doing exactly the same thing. Which changes my whole mind on it all.
zachinglis··on Apple's iPhone launches no longer excite
Yes. It's called Market Share.
zachinglis··on Apple's iPhone launches no longer excite
I agree with most of these points. Good design is iteration though - you want it to be familiar to the last. However, iOS was good design from 'nothing.' 5 years on, it's boring design now - it should have had some serious reiterations.

Going from 0 to iPhone 1 was a huge advancement. It would be nice to see half of that again. Each new iPhone comes out with one or two gimmicks, and an iOS update that'll run on the last version anyway.

Saying that; I'll still be replacing my 4 with a 5 at this event. And I'll still continue buying Apple products. Not trying to suggest we boycott them, but I am feeling like they're not showing their innovation qualities.

I do disagree with the Samsung point. I think their case was beyond fair.

zachinglis··on Helveticards - 100% CSS playing cards
Which email?
zachinglis··on Helveticards - 100% CSS playing cards
Glad to see you've apologised. I respect that. (Not often I see people do that, rather than burying themselves deeper.)

And as the 4 emails and one tweet I have sent you over the years, I never received them.

zachinglis··on Helveticards - 100% CSS playing cards
Erm. Wow.

This is CSS demo that was purely meant to be a learning/teaching exercise. There is absolutely no competition.

But how about rather than complaining that someone else 'took your name', though yours is obviously equally inspired from LinoType you work on building a better business?

I know I personally bought your cards a few years ago and still have yet to receive them despite emails/Tweets and the like.

You're doing yourself absolutely no favours with behaviour like this. This sort of behaviour only works with giant companies, and still then it often creates bad blood for the consumer.

zachinglis··on Blizzard is secretly watermarking WOW screenshots
If you've ever dealt with giving support to people, they usually love to give as little information as possible. I suspect this could potentially help solve any issues or disputes.
zachinglis··on Why you can’t read 9to5Mac on Instapaper
Marco has a history of doing this. He's a developer, and an opinionated one at that (which is saying something for us guys.)

His actions here stink of foul play rather than any genuine worry. Maybe he has another side to this – but if he does, telling people to fuck off isn't the way around it.

zachinglis··on Every '… is down' posts.
Very good point about the discussion. I just look back to when Heroku was going nuts and remembering a good 15 "Heroku is down" posts every time it went down again.
zachinglis··on HP Spectre looks remarkably like the Apple Cinema Display
Whenever people copy Apple's hardware design they miss the point completely and wreck it with a giant brand name smacked on.
zachinglis··on Cubieboard: A small, high-performance ARM box
Erm. That doesn't work the same for a web app as it does for a product site. If you start off with absolutely zero trust and have a shitty first launch, your next few ones will notice a difference.
zachinglis··on Working on a few things in your bedroom doesn't make you an expert
I get thousands of hits of people reading my articles. You are perhaps the first who really cared that much over the last 13 years. But I mainly write on my blog for me and those who want to read. I am not mad hungry for visitors - I have plenty - but if people want to read then all the better.

I have read a few lines in the Bible, there for I am an expert. I have read a few lines of a medical text book, therefore I can perform operations. I have read a line of a blog post, therefore I know what the blog post says and about the author.

(Also, in response to your earlier criticism about design. What do you think design is? Prettiness? Design is about the simplest answer to the problem. As you would have read - that was a Live Redesign, and since has been changed with yet more fiddling. It was not meant to be.)

The truth is I received hundreds of responses via Twitter and Email (some seemed scared to talk so openly about such a problem for fear of being ostracised.) It is a problem and one I wanted to discuss. I've seen it less so in the Ruby world mainly because front-end is much easier to master and slower moving. The Ruby world is less forgiving - remember Yehuda's heckling earlier this year.

So I wrote a post about what I felt was a serious matter and you decided that you had read one sentence and it offended you because of your snap judgement that you knew who I was. You decided that I know nothing about design based on your subjective knowledge (and looking at your Geocities-style abomination of a website - this doesn't help you any further) and the fact that I am dyslexic and perhaps don't always get the words that I want to say out correctly. It was a needless comment that held no value to the thread, to the subject matter or anything.

If you had said "This content is hard to read. I wish the author would rewrite it" then I would have acknowledged that and even perhaps done that. As I have done once before. Instead you tried to act clever (even failing the mark on one of the corrections.)

zachinglis··on Cubieboard: A small, high-performance ARM box
And yet he's selling it. So he obviously does care somewhat - otherwise it would be just a video of it working and maybe some assembly instructions. (Something my grandfather did with the Williamson Amplifier: He published how to create it in Wireless World rather than patenting it and making tons of money from it.)

The point is: he built a business, whatever his intentions before he started, his intentions are now in selling.

zachinglis··on Working on a few things in your bedroom doesn't make you an expert
> Fix the problem and get on with your life. You see the irony in your trolling right?

I know all about copy, rewriting and reiterating on such. This is a blog, not a high level advertisement. Most advertising can't be changed when in the Real World™ - whereas a blog can be.

If you don't like the article, you don't have to read it. If you want to comment about it, read it so you actually know what you're talking about.
