> it's still trash > The app is so full of garbage

Can you elaborate?

zachberger··on Toll signs on 101 report your transponder setting
This, I have lived in the Bay Area for ~5 years now and I've seen <5 cars pulled over on a highway since being here.
zachberger··on Tell HN: Thailand pass applicants receive malicious code via email
I received this but never saw it until I read articles about this. It was automatically sent to the spam box on gmail.
zachberger··on How “latency numbers everybody should know” decreased from 1990–2020
I don’t think it’s important to know the absolute numbers but rather the relative values and rough orders of magnitude.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to explain to developers why their network attaches storage has higher latency than their locally attached NVME SSD

zachberger··on FAA says 5G could impact radio altimeters on most Boeing 737s
> The problem is that radio altimeters are pretty old

Interestingly the 737-200 is excluded from this airworthiness directive. 737-200s are the oldest, still-operating members of the 737 family.

zachberger··on About adding a static route to my DOCSIS modem
But why do this on the modem, why not on the router?
zachberger··on Old.reddit.com Does Not Work
App is dead for me, has been for two hours now. Their status page[1] shows extremely low QPS for this time period. Their twitter[2] has acknowledged a problem, but the status page still shows green.

zachberger··on Thich Nhat Hanh has died
I’ve had a few day trips up to Abhayagiri monastery near Ukaih, CA. It’s incredibly peaceful.

zachberger··on T-Mobile begins blocking iPhone users from enabling iCloud Private Relay in US
Strange, I'm on Verizon too and its not blocked
zachberger··on Twitter Permanently Suspends Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Account
Her official congressional account was not suspended, only her personal account.
zachberger··on UniFi Network Application 6.5.54
I’ve had regular issues with the software. Every few versions of the AP firmware seems to break mDNS. All wired clients in the VLAN will see the multicast packets but none of the wireless clients will. Super frustrating since it breaks Chromecast and airplay. Luckily when I upgrade to a broken firmware it’s easy enough to downgrade to a working version.
zachberger··on Details of some 100M visitors to Thailand exposed online
Discussed previously here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28603247
zachberger··on Mobile LTE Coverage Map
"Just" as in August 6th.
zachberger··on Signal Is Down
Status page now reflects the outage
zachberger··on Ask HN: Is Signal Down?
Down for me in California

Downtime detector shows it down since 7:30PST which is about when I started having issues: https://downdetector.com/status/signal/

zachberger··on Database containing personal info of 106M visitors to Thailand exposed online
Yes, but it's been taken down. I can't query the dataset to see if I, personally, have been exposed.
zachberger··on Database containing personal info of 106M visitors to Thailand exposed online
Name -> passport # isn't concerning?
zachberger··on Database containing personal info of 106M visitors to Thailand exposed online
I visited Thailand about six times in the last four years so this is a bit concerning to me. I really wish there were more details and hope that I can find out if my data was exposed as a part of this.
zachberger··on Headscale: Open-source implementation of the Tailscale control server
It's in the App Store here:

zachberger··on Did AS8003 just disappear?
Some corporations have exhausted the RFC1918 address space. After exhausting that they tend to fall back to the space allocated to CGNAT. And once that is finally exhausted they tend to fall back to privately used public IP addresses (PUPI addresses). We allow all of this on GCP in our VPCs: https://cloud.google.com/vpc/docs/vpc#valid-ranges
zachberger··on Ask HN: How much is Google collecting and keeping on Android if not signed in?
Disclaimer: I work at Google. In cloud, not on Android.

I am privacy conscious so I though I would give a try at Graphene OS, it was brutal. It was overall stable and the stock android R was refreshing. The app selection available through F-droid was very limiting and the quality of apps was a struggle compared to those in the app store.

I wish there was some incentive for the better apps to open source and publish on F-droid. I donate to many apps on Patreon, should I just message to the devs and ask them to go open source and publish on f-droid?

zachberger··on Welcoming our first riders in San Francisco
"beginning later today"
zachberger··on Windows 96
I think it is still helpful, at least for MacOS. My work 2018 MBP was feeling slow. I reimaged it last October and now it feels like new.
zachberger··on An app for M1 Macs that plays the sound of a fan as CPU usage goes up
And that's only on the laptops. Two monitors are supported on the Mac Mini.
zachberger··on Senior Google exec opposes remote work, moves to New Zealand to work remotely
Over the winter covid case rates were pretty bad in Latin America. Thailand was at less than 100 cases/day, with a large fraction being caught in these quarantine facilities. Thailand seemed like the safer option.

Also it was a 7 week stay, so 2 weeks of quarantine was quite short compared to the duration of the trip.

zachberger··on M1 MacBook battery life so good Apple thought indicator was broken
Hmm I have no issues with it on my Pixel 5.
zachberger··on Senior Google exec opposes remote work, moves to New Zealand to work remotely
Agreed. I did this in December in Thailand and I had no problems. Just come in with a plan to stay busy the two weeks. I was able to work remotely which took up the majority of my time.
