z500··on Tourists stranded in Australian wilderness following faulty Google Maps route
I just keep going and tell the GPS to deal with it until it stops chiming at me and finds a new route
z500··on .ai website registrations are a windfall for tiny Anguilla
I remember .cc being marketed as "the new .com" 20 years ago or so. Never did see many .cc domains.
z500··on Do Elephants Have Souls?
Considering viruses are basically just spring loaded injectors, I guess about as much of a soul as a rock ready to fall over in a strong wind.
z500··on Why did words that end in "tron" once sound so futuristic? (2017)
> What suffixes and embodied symbols capture the spirit of our own times?

z500··on How to Design an ISA
Oh that sounds cool. I guess that would make it a ZISC? What kind of applications did you have in mind for it?
z500··on How to Design an ISA
What's the architecture specialized for? Like a GPU or something?
z500··on How to Design an ISA
Me too! Having your own working CPU design running actual programs is a whole different rush. Hopefully this year I can get mine running on an FPGA.
z500··on German developer guilty of 'hacking' for exposing hardcoded credentials in app
According to the linked heise.de article the defendant assumed the credentials were for a database that only contained his client's data, and immediately disconnected as soon as he realized he was actually seeing data for all of the complainant's clients.
z500··on What happens when a school bans smartphones? A complete transformation
Hell, at my school you couldn't even listen to a CD at lunch. It boggles the mind.
z500··on 32GB of RAM is becoming the standard
I remember in the late 90s/early 00s PC Magazine or something had an ad in the back for a "monster" 47 GB hard drive. That's so quaint now.
z500··on Tell HN: Bash.org is no more
I remember that one! It was d-_-b
z500··on Motorola's pioneering 8-bit 6800: Origins and architecture
Yeah I love this blog, but pretty much every post is like this.
z500··on My favorite restaurant served gas
I had to laugh at the mundanity of the author's revelation as a nearly lifelong Pennsylvania resident.
z500··on Ask HN: Coolest thing you learned in 2023?
There's an excellent video series by Ben Eater on YouTube where he builds an 8-bit CPU on breadboards. I followed along and built something like it in Logisim, but 16-bit. Logisim wasn't very fast, and I was getting really sick of dragging wires around, so I eventually migrated to Icarus Verilog, then Verilator, and GTKWave to examine traces. I'm one of those developers who uses Windows, so WSL came in really handy for all these.

For the RISC CPU I couldn't tell you exactly what resources I used, it was kind of a blur lol. Basically it was Wikipedia, what I remember from computer architecture class 10 years ago, and a lot of googling, mostly lecture slides from classes I didn't get to take in person. I used ChipVerify for Verilog reference a lot. I can't remember what tutorial I used, but there are plenty out there.

z500··on Ask HN: Coolest thing you learned in 2023?
How to design a microcoded CISC CPU, then a RISC CPU. Nothing fancy in terms of getting modern applications to run on it, but it was a lot of fun seeing how much faster it could be than the CISC CPU. I've been looking into FPGAs but maybe I should just pick one and take the plunge.
z500··on How to pronounce the trickiest English words
They probably meant cases. Nominative, accusative, dative, genitive, and vestiges of the instrumental.
z500··on Which Interpreters Are Faster, AST or Bytecode?
That's really interesting. I found a StackExchange answer on this

z500··on Wireless is a trap (2020)
I don't know what they're talking about, my mouse takes a couple AA batteries and I can count on one hand the times I remember changing them out.
z500··on Write more "useless" software
Man I always miss these. I have so much half-baked stuff to show off!
z500··on Psytrance Guide
Hi tech psytrance is some of the most aggressively weird stuff I've ever heard. I love it.
z500··on Nomnoml
I have a tool I've been working on on and off, and after several years it's actually working. But I was barely smart enough to do even that. If people actually started using it and asking for features that would be a nightmare for me lol
z500··on 12,000-year-old realistic human statue was unearthed
More like anatomically correct.
z500··on Why does trying to break into the NT 3.1 kernel reboot my 486DX4 machine?
When I was a kid I used to have this Charles Petzold book that I learned this stuff from, it was basically my Bible. I don't have it anymore, I wish I could remember what it was. People recommend Code a lot, but I don't think that was it.

Edit: it wasn't Charles Petzold at all, it was DOS Power Tools by Paul Somerson

z500··on Why does trying to break into the NT 3.1 kernel reboot my 486DX4 machine?
Tech history is basically crack.
z500··on My Unhealthy Relationship with Keyboards
Maybe it's because I learned to type in chat rooms and never bothered with the home row thing, but I guess I just don't type enough numbers to have muscle memory for the number row. But the numpad is stupid easy to develop muscle memory for.
z500··on Google Podcasts is going away
Great recommendation! I already like how it doesn't randomly stop playing my podcasts.
z500··on Double Commander – Changes in version 1.1.0
I assume that's what's going on, I guess to discourage hotlinking.
z500··on Double Commander – Changes in version 1.1.0
If the link doesn't work, try copy pasting into a new tab instead of clicking.
z500··on Time to preserve those floppy disks
I once wrote a program to actually do this for me when that was all I had to migrate files off my computer. But that was like 25 years ago so the files weren't so big.
z500··on If you can use open source, you can build hardware
Any tips for getting started for a software engineer? I built a couple CPUs in a circuit simulator, I'd love to get these things running on silicon of some kind and benchmark them against each other, but I wonder if I would be biting off more than I can chew.
