z3phyr··on Part two of Grant Sanderson's video with Terry Tao on the cosmic distance ladder
The important thing is to be self aware enough to clearly differentiate between good and bad, even when doing bad stuff sometimes could be beneficial.
z3phyr··on OpenBSD Innovations
Computer science evolved during the time when most people did not have a computer.

The concepts of compilers, operating systems, databases, file systems, computer graphics all evolved from the 60s to the early 90s.

After that, it was mostly scaling.

But it is anti-alternative. It discourages alternative ways to do things.

This is bad in the long term because alternative ways of doing things open other avenues of investigation and development.

But all we get are improved versions of hammer when everything is made out as a nail.

z3phyr··on AMD: Microcode Signature Verification Vulnerability
Are there any tutorials on writing custom microcode? I imagine it would be like ring0 driver programming on steroids! Pretty cool.
z3phyr··on Ask HN: What is interviewing like now with everyone using AI?
Who do I want to work with? A person who can work with me, get stuff done and somewhat match vibe with their coworkers. They can be good in spelling bee, swimming, chess, marathon or leetcode, its on them. I do not get much useful information out of it.

What I usually do is case study that I also do not know at the start of the interview. The case study does not imagine spherical cows and are not usually leetcode style. Its a case of role playing a problem. We brainstorm it together and I determine if I can work with them.

z3phyr··on Nvidia’s $589B DeepSeek rout
I want the LLM to decide not to do anything, or write a new OS.

Whenever I prompt: "Do not do anything"

It always does <something>.

z3phyr··on Psychedelic Graphics 0: Introduction
Slightly offtopic: Is there a way to do create meshes and animate them directly inside blender, pragmatically? Sort of like shadertoy, but instead of drawing, sculpting and rigging manually, I write some code that generates meshes and run shaders on them for effect?
z3phyr··on Stargate Project: SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, MGX to build data centers
I consider many successful military leaders and politicians to be geniuses as well. In my books, Caesar is as genius as Newton!

Having said that, we do not to understand the world to exploit it for ourselves. And what better way to understand and exploit the universe than science? Its an endearment.

z3phyr··on It's time to make computing personal again
Single player video games are not going to die. And the market seems to punish any push for always online model (which is obviously a scam). I say this because a bulk of market for personal computing is driven by video games.
z3phyr··on TikTok goes dark in the US
Does the constitution apply everywhere?

We take the global world for granted, but it is made up of sovereign states many of them have their own constitution.

z3phyr··on The Chaos (1922)
I would love to listen to an Eminem rendition of this poem as a rap.
z3phyr··on The GPU, not the TPM, is the root of hardware DRM
Most of the people using Microsoft have OEM licence. When people buy new hardware, people are buying a new license of Windows as well.
z3phyr··on Apple Photos phones home on iOS 18 and macOS 15
The initiative is for the user to command their computer to communicate or not with the information of their choosing.

"Computer, I command thee to send this and only this information over the channel of my choosing, using following encryption scheme, for here be my seal of approval for anyone who might want to verify, and here be the key"

"Sicut Vult"

z3phyr··on What's Next for WebGPU
I agree; however, engine developers are already dedicated to building massive behemoths of software that is the game engine and they constantly do collaborate with driver devs, essentially sharing much of the same skillset.

Also, the onus is actually on the GPU manufacturers (not game engine devs) to simplify the programmability of the GPUs to the level we have for CPUs (we also do not write microcode, however, the programmability is much much simpler with access to good compiler toolchains). This will massively help non game engine developers who need GPUs for other kinds of compute.

z3phyr··on What's Next for WebGPU
I think the future is getting rid of all the APIs and driver overhead, compile directly to GPU compute and write your own software renderers in a language targeting GPUs (Could be Zig)
z3phyr··on What's Next for WebGPU
Another reason is that exploratory programming is hard by design in Rust. Rust is great if you already have a spec and know what needs to be done.

Most of the gamedev in my opinion is extremely exploratory and demands constant experimentation with design. C/C++ offer fluidity, a very good and mature debug toolchain, solid performance ceiling and support from other people.

It will be really hard to replace C++ in performance/simulation contexts. Security takes a backseat there.

z3phyr··on Two galaxies aligned in a way where their gravity acts as a compound lens
When we do start getting anywhere else in the solar system in reasonable time, then and only then will eclipses be "not special events". Until then..
z3phyr··on It's legal for police to use deception in interrogations. Some want that to end
Simply in India, anything told to the police is not applicable as evidence in the court of law.

Only statements in front of Judges are applicable. So it makes no sense for police to interrogate to get answers.

z3phyr··on How 'Factorio' seduced Silicon Valley and me
Are you working at Black Mesa research? Or maybe space communist office? Do you work on interplanetary industrial stuff?
z3phyr··on How 'Factorio' seduced Silicon Valley and me
Well loved? It runs on network effect mostly. hg is well loved but not well used.
z3phyr··on Wikipedia article blocked worldwide by Delhi high court
The opposite of censoring is putting out information at scale. What if the Chinese government decides to generate so much information at so much scale that people start believing it? Advertisements work, do they not? Saturate the internet with speech, so much speech that speech loses meaning.
z3phyr··on 4K Gaming on Raspberry Pi [video]
I want to experiment with graphics programming without using APIs like Vulkan and write GPU code at the lowest level possible. I believe a lot of complexity can be shaved off with added advantage of a custom rendering toolchain. I can do native voxel primitives and ideas from Ken Silverman's old voxel engine, all implemented in the GPU. The only problem will be cross platform support.

I would really love a low cost board with open GPUs for that. Custom software renderers are the future I am looking forward to. Its the holy grail to ultimate developer freedom, without the complexity and verbosity of current day situation. Cross platform will need work from hardware manufacturers though!

z3phyr··on Escaping the Chrome Sandbox Through DevTools
Malwares are going to be written in rust; What difference does it make? Also Its not memory based vulnerability but policy based vulnerability.
z3phyr··on Escaping the Chrome Sandbox Through DevTools
Sell it to governments. Biggest good guys bad guys.
z3phyr··on Escaping the Chrome Sandbox Through DevTools
You only risk prison if you sell it to the "bad guys" on the black market. Sell it to people who can jail the bad guys instead; that is, our governments.
z3phyr··on An exoskeleton let a paralyzed man walk, then its maker refused repairs
Skunkworks airforce projects of old did provide long term support to their customer, even when a lot of their initial prototypes remained just that.
z3phyr··on An exoskeleton let a paralyzed man walk, then its maker refused repairs
Maybe allow others to replace the firmware with their own?
z3phyr··on PS5 Dashboards Flooded with Unwanted Ads–Sony Claims It Wasn't Intentional
I like most immersive sim games. However, the market does not seem to like them. They are very hard to make and get right, but the RoI is mostly cult following.

If you liked Deus Ex, you might also like Dishonored and Prey.

PS: I would love to build an immersive sim if I get enough time, but I know for sure that it would just be a labour of love, like a painting which may or may not sell.

z3phyr··on CISA boss: Makers of insecure software are the real cyber villains
> Same is true for many kinds of malware.

Would you prefer to not have Doom at all? (Over only some malware not existing)
