yw3410··on Detecting Dementia Using Lexical Analysis: Terry Pratchett's Discworld
Personally I just ignore them(Raising Steam and Snuff). There are too many inconsistencies with how Vimes and Lipwig are characterized in those books, that I can't see them as the same characters. I haven't started the Shepherd's Crown for the same reason.

I don't think that any fan of his is under any illusion that those books are up to his standard, but he has so many good books that his legacy will be safe.

yw3410··on The Time I Lied to the CTO and Saved the Day
Could you elaborate what you mean when you say they broke the team?
yw3410··on How to Use the Foreign Function API in Java 22 to Call C Libraries
You can't be as aggressive at removing functions in Java than in Rust though since it's dynamic dispatch (e.g., if you use toString once in your code, you need to keep all implementations of toString which are reachable even if users don't use reflection).
yw3410··on The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Emacs
The best reason to use Emacs is because it is _yours_ in a way no other software is.

You can change practically every aspect of it; and crucially it's really, really easy like no other editor or program.

yw3410··on A Proposal for an asynchronous Rust GUI framework
I've just wanted right click menus and second screens on Wayland for ages.

My herd of yaks is only getting higher over time...

yw3410··on This isn’t the way to speed up Rust compile times
The author uses NixOS.
yw3410··on Leaving Haskell behind
To be fair, mixing higher order functions with effects (exceptions) is really hard without changing the type system completely. At that point you're moving into novel encoding territory.
yw3410··on Leaving Haskell behind
The Scala community is incredibly committed to stability; every open source maintainer I know of in that space checks for binary compatibility when releasing as well as cross-compiling for multiple targets (Node, Web, Native) and versions.
yw3410··on Leaving Haskell behind
Also, Mavens metadata model is recursive. You want need a dependency? You're going to have to pull in the parent, which is probably an Uber pom. Take a look at your M2 cache, it's probably got a kubernetes pom even if you've never touched it before because your logging library uses an Uber pom...
yw3410··on Show HN: Python can make 3M+ WebSocket keys per second
Yes, though hopefully it's been packaged up by the distro otherwise you'll end up having dependency problems if you compiled against a wrong libc or something else.
yw3410··on Gopher Wrangling: Effective error handling in Go
Monads have nothing to do with laziness and we're talking about the Result type anyway.

OP is correct. If it has a bind, pure and map (which it does!) then for all intents it forms a monad.

Now the fact is you can't _manipulate_ monads in Rust easily (see kinds and discussions wrt GAT), but nonetheless monads are present in all languages with ADTs in the same way that rings are present in all languages with addition.

yw3410··on Killing Community
Correct me if I'm wrong but, you and others are saying that posting racial slurs, CP and gore for shock value are an integral part of the culture?

I don't understand why it's important to be flamed at all by people who are anonymous? I might banter with friends, but there's a shared history of understanding there; in an anonymous message board there's none of that so I don't understand what it's trying to achieve?

yw3410··on Killing Community
Really? Would you not think that being anonymous, performative moral actions would be fewer than a social network which was tied to an actual identity?

I don't understand why in your example, the point couldn't be made without specifically using crude language. It doesn't seem like that racial slurs would contribute to the threads topic.

yw3410··on My friends who cheated in interviews are getting promoted (2022)
My intuition would expect the two to be correlated.

All anecdotal evidence I've seen points to the language mattering a great deal since only those people who are enthusiastic about niche languages, tend to put more time in learning/practicing programming and all other things being equal, spending more time on a skill correlates to being better at said skill.

yw3410··on Z Garbage Collector: The Next Generation
But what you call promptness is predictability from the PoV of the programmer, no?

I don't think I've mentioned performance anywhere; thanks for the paper I'll take a look.

yw3410··on I Wrote an Activitypub Server in OCaml: Lessons Learnt, Weekends Lost
There is pyml for interopt but I've never used it.
yw3410··on I Wrote an Activitypub Server in OCaml: Lessons Learnt, Weekends Lost
GUIs are a PITA like in most languages.

I think most people use something which binds to gtk (such as lablgtk) or Qt.

For scientific computing there is Owl, but I haven't used it personally.

yw3410··on I Wrote an Activitypub Server in OCaml: Lessons Learnt, Weekends Lost
Vscode works since there is an LSP server.
yw3410··on Z Garbage Collector: The Next Generation
It does give better performance predictability! Decrementing a refcount may either be a no-op or expensive but crucially the op can happen only during that particular call, nowhere else.
yw3410··on Most of my skills are now worth nothing, but 10% are worth 1000x
I usually code in more estoteric bits of tech and problems which I didn't expect ChatGPT to do well in but I tried it at work on a standard backend stack (Java, Ivy, Ant) and it was absolutely _terrible_. It kept making stuff up and then I kept correcting it. I cannot understand how people are using it for work?!
yw3410··on Stop Building Closed Ecosystems
My personal applications tend to use only monospaces fonts and stick to Latin characters so I can get away with glyph rendering and then a very simple layout algorithm so something like ab_glyph or freetype is enough and I don't need harfbuzz.

I'm aware of swash and the other libraries in that stack, but it was going through a rewrite. The Linux support was incomplete, for example, it was dependent on a piped call to fc-list and parsing the output to get the system fonts.

Also, if I were doing it via web, I'd be tempted to render to an offscreen canvas and call it a day.

yw3410··on Stop Building Closed Ecosystems
Rust does well on the text-shaping and glyph rendering, but the rest of the ecosystem is still massively geared towards Windows and game development.

I am rooting for Vello to succeed!

yw3410··on Kenji López-Alt spent 5 months studying Chicago thin-crust pizza
I have fond memories at midnight barbeques.

yw3410··on Testing GPT 4's code-writing capabilities with some real world problems
Do you find AI to be good with art generation? I can't use any of the art in the projects that I do without extensive inefficient editing since the stuff it spits out isn't how a human would draw.

It's good for concept browsing, but not much more for me at the moment.

yw3410··on Of regrets
The term used is fiduciary duty/responsibility.
yw3410··on Apple announces full Swift rewrite of the Foundation framework (2022)
If I recall Swift has a very interesting ABI for generics.

yw3410··on Learning Modern 3D Graphics Programming (2012)
Honestly, if it's a desktop application and you're not using heavy 3D graphics, why not use wgpu with Cairo? With some smart region tracking it should be plenty performant.
yw3410··on Emacs should become a Wayland compositor
There's meow-mode and others.

yw3410··on The Sam Bankman-Fried empire crumbled. What happened?
That's essentially Kant's argument as to why you should have universal morals (see the classic not lying to an axe murderer).
