ytNumbers··on Why Don’t People Who Can’t Afford Housing Just Move Where It’s Cheaper?
As Sam Kinison used to say: "Move to the food!!!".

ytNumbers··on Young Chinese are sick of working long hours
In terms of using high tech for oppression, the Chinese are the world leaders by far. However, I have to admit that plenty of countries are slowly evolving towards emulating the new high tech Chinese model of tyranny.
ytNumbers··on Americans Are a Lonely Lot, and Young People Bear the Heaviest Burden
If a guy is very lonely, his chances with women will be nearly zero because he will reek of desperation (and women can smell that a mile away). Fixing a tough situation like that requires a lot of time, effort, and courage. One method for overcoming loneliness is to take some dance lessons and learn to dance. Dance provides an in-your-face experience with plenty of women which should go a long way towards ending that vibe of lonely desperation.

I have concluded that, in the USA, most ordinary folks have, much to their detriment, never heard of Dave Ramsey.

ytNumbers··on US and allies launch strikes on Syria chemical weapons sites
It's sad that the top comment here is a conspiratorial hypothesis with game theory as a supporting argument. It seems wrong to cite game theory as evidence that a gas attack was unnecessary when that gas attack achieved victory by forcing the Douma rebels to, just hours later, agree to surrender. It's sickening to contemplate, but one could argue that in this case, the despicable use of chemical weapons brought a remarkably swift end to the fighting in Douma and in the longer term actually saved lives in that region of Syria.

ytNumbers··on Many teenagers report that they’ve never been so bored
There's plenty of great content on YouTube. If you spend a day or two watching quality videos, YouTube will then start recommending other quality videos with a similar worldview. How do you find that first day or two worth of quality YouTube channels?

ytNumbers··on Ask HN: What can motivate senior developers go work in startup with low salary?
Early stage startups always entail challenging tasks and shares. You're trying to persuade senior developers to gamble on a couple of founders with no track record and an idea. You had better have a truly incredible idea! Care to share what that might be? Right here and now is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your superior management skills by utilizing HN to pitch to the best developers in the world. It's a free spin of the wheel, so why not try to hit the jackpot?
ytNumbers··on Ask HN: Would you pay to have a penpal?
I don't think people will pay for a penpal. However, they might pay for advice if the person giving the advice qualified as some kind of expert in the area in question. Perhaps you could consider an idea pivot to something similar that people would be willing to pay for.
ytNumbers··on Ask HN: How to stop chronic worrying?
Negative reinforcement can be very effective at curtailing any bad habits you might have. Put a rubber band on your wrist. Then, any time you find yourself needlessly worrying, just pull on the rubber band, and let it snap hard enough to sting. If, shortly thereafter, you start worrying again, pull that rubber band a little further so it stings even more. Repeat as needed.

A less painful technique for addressing this is to click on the following link, have a laugh, and then vow to stop being "that guy"...

ytNumbers··on Ask HN: Is it important your partner/spouse be interested in your tech career?
It's perfectly fine that your SO is a non-tech person. It might even be a good thing. If you can't explain in layman's terms why your side project is so fantastic, then you might realize it's just not so wonderful.
ytNumbers··on Show HN: Find a co-hacker for your project
McAfee Web Advisor has labeled your web site as not to be trusted. I was so looking forward to seeing what you built. Perhaps your site has been compromised in some way?
ytNumbers··on Show HN: Pay-per-minute video/audio calls with WebRTC
Congratulations, it looks like you've built something really awesome! Going with WebRTC and peer-to-peer should save you a ton of money. Since your service works 24/7, your service seems a lot better than Clarity.fm, and your revenue cut is quite reasonable. I hate to nitpick, but you've got a typo on your home page at "receive you earnings". Best of luck!... It looks like you're going to be a big success.

ytNumbers··on Free Money: The Surprising Effects of a Basic Income Supplied by Government
I can see how basic income could help some types of people, but it can also hurt other types of people. If only there was a way to determine who it would help/hurt, and then to only give it out when it would actually help.

ytNumbers··on [dead]
Based on my personal travel experiences, I've long believed that Trip Advisor is being paid to delete bad hotel reviews. I came to that conclusion because I couldn't think of any other reason why some truly awful hotels lack the brutally honest negative reviews that they so richly deserve.
ytNumbers··on Top medical experts say we should decriminalize all drugs (2016)
There are often negative consequences for society when someone becomes a drug addict. There are the costs to society at the macro level. And, of course, there's the devastation suffered by families.

ytNumbers··on Ask HN: Potentially Moving to SF / SV with a Family
This subject could be easier to address than you might imagine. Moving away from your wife's family is a big sacrifice for her. Is there any advantage to this move besides money?
ytNumbers··on What Is Ethereum?
During the past decade, the Federal Reserve has created 4 trillion dollars out of thin air in an attempt to prop up the economy. The Fed seems hesitant to unwind that as it carries the risk of harming the economy. Fiat money can always be created out of thin air, and it seems to be proving difficult for those in power to resist that temptation.

ytNumbers··on Ask HN: Take over family business or pursue my own professional goals?
Those born wealthy usually fail at being an entrepreneur. While you could be the next Bill Gates, you'd face unbelievably long odds. Becoming a CEO looks like a sure thing for you. I'd go with the safe bet for ten years, and then after that you can move on and then do whatever thrills you.
ytNumbers··on 6 Corporations Control 90% of the Media in America
Here's a long list of YouTubers who cover the news. Some of these people I've never heard of, and some of them I'd stay far away from [e.g., Alex Jones]:

http://www.usmessageboard.com/threads/which-youtuber-channel...

For online news aggregators... He's overly right-wing for my tastes, but the best truly independent aggregator I've been able to find is Drudge. I'm frankly stunned that after 20 years, the powers that be have not yet found a way to shut him down.

ytNumbers··on 6 Corporations Control 90% of the Media in America
Some might ask why this matters. The problem with these six mega-corporations is that they are controlled by a handful of billionaires and a few distasteful foreign governments that do not have the best interests of Americans in mind. These corporations own the US legacy media outlets (e.g., CNN, MSNBC, FOX, etc) and most of the larger online US news sites. They have, in my opinion, been quite effective at brainwashing a huge segment of society with regard to the important political issues of our day. I've long ago moved on to better news sources, but I don't personally know anyone else over the age of 30 who has also done that. It looks like it's going to be many decades before these giant media outlets finally lose their relevance. And that's a crying shame.

ytNumbers··on Which Tech Giant Would You Drop?
I can't resist... Try Googling it! Or Alphabeting it. Or whatever they're calling themselves these days.
ytNumbers··on Weed will soon clobber beer sales, Wall Street says
That wikipedia page lists more than a dozen potential side effects; many of them are quite devastating. I will never understand why a majority of the younger generation views this kind of Russian roulette as something to be celebrated. Perhaps someone in this forum, who is so inclined, can explain their reasoning on this? Why do something that can so easily ruin your health?
