ytNumbers··on Our ongoing work to tackle hate
It's often a shame that network effects are nearly impossible to overcome. It looks like the feature of "less censorship" will never be enough to mount a challenge to YouTube. But, perhaps posts like these from Google will one day succeed in persuading people to start looking elsewhere for videos.

ytNumbers··on What happened after my 13-year-old son joined the alt-right
I suppose UKIP not wanting to submit to their EU bureaucrat overlords makes them radical, right-wing, authoritarian, ultranationalists. Can't someone just finally be sick and tired of all the consequences of EU globalism without being labeled a racist? Sigh... I guess someone has to live for decades in one of the areas worst affected by globalism in order to grasp what has been squandered. For most people, they're not paying the price, so they don't see the problem.
ytNumbers··on What happened after my 13-year-old son joined the alt-right
You think UKIP is fascist? Wikipedia defines that with the phrase "...dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition...". Many powerful politically inclined groups are forcibly silencing their opponents these days, but UKIP is not among them.
ytNumbers··on Ask HN: How to deal with a senior colleague who acts like he's boss?
Since the person who has an issue here is the new junior developer, complaining to upper management that someone "doesn't understand logic" seems like a terrible idea to me. Such an action could make this new junior employee look like he/she is the real problem here.
ytNumbers··on Ask HN: How to get this fraudulent copy of our website shut down?
Perhaps, if you provide links to those who have been scammed, you could get Cloudflare to drop them. With enough time and effort, you might be able to stop these scammers who are abusing your company's reputation. Sadly, it's likely these criminals reside in a country that will never prosecute them. Until browsers/anti-phishing improves enough to flag/hide scams like this, there will always be plenty of suckers on the internet, and thus, no way to force these sorts of bad guys to find something else to do with their time.
ytNumbers··on Life of Brian at 40: an assertion of individual freedom that still resonates
Because if you really thought about it, you'd realize that you have so much in common with the religious zealots of old (and be so horrified by this) that you'd have to go home and completely re-think your belief system. In the 21st century, people want to believe that they have nothing in common with the Spanish Inquisition.... "Put her in the comfy chair!".
ytNumbers··on Under-18s face 'like' and 'streaks' bans on social media
Predictions are typically made by looking at recent trends and then extrapolating from there. It would take some time, but I could provide you with a bunch of links to reputable news sources on this subject. Instead, to save time, let's go with a one page summary of the new internet censorship that is being proposed (or is already taking place) in some western countries in just the past month:

ytNumbers··on Under-18s face 'like' and 'streaks' bans on social media
Don't view any such purchase as a long term investment. It probably won't be long before the UK government demands that ISPs block all VPN usage. It looks increasingly likely that many western countries will soon be taking a Chinese-style approach towards the internet. There's always some small benefit to restricting liberty, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
ytNumbers··on Why Don't Americans Understand How Poor Their Lives Are?
Which approach is better is very difficult to objectively evaluate. There are a vast number of yardsticks you could use, and I can't see two people ever agreeing on which yardstick is the right one to judge a health care system. Since cancer is one of the top quickly fatal medical conditions, I consider the wait to get treated for cancer to be an excellent yardstick for evaluating any health care system. In this regard, the USA is way better than many countries that have government run free (but rationed) health care systems.
ytNumbers··on Why Don't Americans Understand How Poor Their Lives Are?
Even when health care is free (but rationed), there's a ton of people who are killed by delays to receiving a needed medical procedure. Every approach to health care has its down sides.
ytNumbers··on Entrepreneurism Is Overrated
>Overall, entrepreneurship is overrated. 5 successes for every 100 failures

If failure is defined as going out of business, and success is defined as surviving, then the real five year survival rate for new businesses is ten times higher than the author has written.

ytNumbers··on Show HN: The future of dating → no swipes, no online chats
Sounds very old-school! It's hard to believe that it took this long for someone to come up with an approach to dating that uses just the right amount of tech. I would imagine many other web services could improve their site by considering: "How much tech is the right amount of tech?"
ytNumbers··on France Plans 5% Digital Tax as Governments Chase Internet Giants
This seems like a remarkably easy way for governments to raise revenue without directly harming their citizens. Not all 193 sovereign countries in the world can (or would want to) implement such a tax. But, I can imagine that there are dozens of countries that are going to view this new approach to taxation as the easiest money they've ever confiscated.
ytNumbers··on Want to Stop Fake News? Pay for the Real Thing
I'd love to find out which startups attempted this. I guess the network effects of YouTube/Patreon were simply too big for them to overcome.
ytNumbers··on The Buzzfeed Lesson
Some of the journalists who used to work for companies like Buzzfeed have joined the YouTube cottage industry of reporting as an independent journalist. Unlike 90% of the mainstream news media, these individual journalists are not owned and controlled by six billionaires. They make their living via the tiny percentage of their audience that is willing to pay them through sites like Patreon. The recent Covington mis-reporting by the mainstream media should start to wake people up regarding the need to receive one's news from independent journalists. Regarding specific recommendations... He's a little more left wing than I'd prefer, but I'd still recommend Tim Pool's YouTube channel.
ytNumbers··on Ask HN: I think I want a divorce
If you're uncertain whether or not you've earned a divorce, then you haven't earned it. If you choose to begin the divorce process, your wife will suddenly be hugely financially incentivized to take steps to make sure that she gets the maximum amount of money from you. You will likely be amazed at how different her attitude is once you begin to divorce.
ytNumbers··on Ask HN: I think I want a divorce
Pick an upstairs room to do your work in. Put a big sign on the door that says you may only knock on the door if the house is on fire. When you're ready for a break from working on your project, then open the door. Anyone who ignores the sign gets an immediate "Hey! Can't you read?!!"
ytNumbers··on [dead]
I got: "Unable to connect to Mysql Server".
ytNumbers··on What I Learned About Upwork from a Bumbling Scammer
Excellent post! Just to get a sense of what percentage of upwork freelancers are scammers, roughly how many freelancers have you hired through UpWork?
ytNumbers··on Google denies altering YouTube code to break Microsoft Edge
YouTube's not done until Edge won't run.
ytNumbers··on Ask HN: I need to make extra $20k for a mortgage balloon payment. Any advice?
The stock market has been falling hard lately. If ever there was a time NOT to take such a risk, now is probably it.
ytNumbers··on Introducing Votable, the spiritual successor to DMOZ
What approach are you taking to cope with trolls who would vandalize your site?
ytNumbers··on Ask HN: Should we waive technical interviews if candidate contributes?
What if a friend of the candidate is the actual person who contributed the code patch? You can't be too careful these days.
ytNumbers··on My startup is being impersonated all across the board, help?
When you make a mistake, you have to pay the price. It's time for you to pick a new name, and then nail it down every which way. Then you can make big announcements about what your startup will be doing, and not worry about being impersonated.
ytNumbers··on Bootstrapping a $60K/Month Online Lending Business
An interest rate of 190% ? Wow. For those with no credit, I guess 190% APR represents the risk that the lender is taking. I'm sure that 190% rate sucks way less than your typical payday loan rate, but this is why many states have outlawed payday loans.
ytNumbers··on Start colon cancer screening at 45, not 50, American Cancer Society urges
Always check the online reviews before going to any doctor. A bad doctor with zero ethics might be tempted to do a "rush" job on you. If you want to know what that experience would be like, click the link below:

ytNumbers··on Show HN: Pravda for the People: We Rate Billionaires.club
A nice start. However, there seems to be plenty of room for improvement. You seem to have "Founded Own Company" set to "No" for everyone. Perhaps that field is not actually getting pulled from your database?
ytNumbers··on Ask HN: How do you make life's decisions?
Since you feel you have poor judgement, I recommend you try these steps: 1) Find some smart friends. 2) When you need to make an important decision, ask your smart friends for advice. 3) When multiple smart people are giving you essentially the same advice, take their advice.

When it comes to advice, "Wise men don't need it, and fools won't heed it. And those who want it the most like it the least."

ytNumbers··on Ask HN: How have you handled existential crisis in your life?

ytNumbers··on Doctor bought jet and Maserati from proceeds of unnecessary chemotherapy
People will read the online reviews when they buy some trinket on Amazon, but they won't do that for their doctor. About two thirds of this doctor's patients rated him one star. These days, your life may depend on your willingness to read some online reviews.
