ysangkok··on Man-made super flu could kill half of humanity
http://dictionary.reference.com/help/faq/language/g63.html

What is the plural of virus?

Viruses. It is not viri, or (worse) virii. True, the word comes directly from Latin, but not all Latin words ending in -us have -i as their plural.

http://linuxmafia.com/~rick/faq/plural-of-virus.html

The plural of virus is neither viri nor virii, nor even vira nor virora. It is quite simply viruses, irrespective of context.

ysangkok··on "I've isolated the bug to a database query"
Why not? It's probably computer-generated. You can actually see the first page, and if you look at it, it uses nested SELECT statements. No one said it was smart, but it certainly is reasonable.
ysangkok··on Programmers' Day
There are only 128 ASCII characters.
ysangkok··on Get started with WebGL: draw a square
People are already making games in OpenGL and C. This was totally impossible before, using JavaScript. Redesigning the whole API would delay the process, and it would have to use OpenGL as it's own backend anyway, so you'd inherit a lot of the problems.

If you want something that's easier to use, wait until game engines for JS appear. This is supposed to be low level.

With NaCL you might end up being able to use OpenCL to construct your own 3D rendering stack and use it in the browser.

ysangkok··on Life on the Command Line
> When Ronald Reagan was a radio announcer, he used to call baseball games by reading the terse descriptions that trickled in over the telegraph wire and were printed out on a paper tape. He would sit there, all by himself in a padded room with a microphone, and the paper tape would eke out of the machine and crawl over the palm of his hand printed with cryptic abbreviations. (...) His listeners, many of whom presumably thought that Reagan was actually at the ballpark watching the game, would reconstruct the scene in their minds according to his descriptions.

> This is exactly how the World Wide Web works: the HTML files are the pithy description on the paper tape, and your Web browser is Ronald Reagan. The same is true of Graphical User Interfaces in general.

ysangkok··on PhpDaemon: An event-driven server-side framework
Does anyone know any use cases? Does it really scale? I always though PHP wasn't the fastest scripting language around. Does the PHC even speed it up? How does it compare with Twisted?
ysangkok··on The Mother of All Interview Questions
You know the know and understand the goals, but you don't understand the internals.
ysangkok··on Google Native Client 0.5 : released with stable ABI
It's called Software Fault Isolation. There is a link to the paper on it in Wikipedia.
ysangkok··on Google Native Client 0.5 : released with stable ABI
It already is. You need to enable it manually though. If you use NaCl 0.5 you need Chrome 14.
ysangkok··on OTCC: 445-line C compiler written in C
No. That was TCC.
ysangkok··on Airbus reveals aircraft of the future
Maybe because people expect better from an aircraft maker. You'd think they'd have some kind of realistic view on matters, but it looks like they hired a sci-fi author to do their PR.
ysangkok··on Ask HN: When was your "ah-ha" moment when learning how to program?
And it should. The "=" is misused like this. ":=" should've become the norm...

Mathematics and programming are similar in so many regards. No reason to confuse people like this.

ysangkok··on Ask HN: When was your "ah-ha" moment when learning how to program?
Goto considered inspiring :D
ysangkok··on Writing a blog platform in Go
What's with his impatience? Scala isn't that hard.
ysangkok··on Netflix To Come To Linux Via HTML5
There are more Firefox/Windows users than there are Chrome/Linux users.
ysangkok··on Netflix To Come To Linux Via HTML5
This doesn't even work in Chrome unless you enable it. They are not using this, it would make them to dependent on an immature technology.
ysangkok··on Skype protocol reverse engineered, source available
The latest Linux version is from April this year.
ysangkok··on Google Apps dropping support for older browsers
You can get Firefox and Opera in portable versions that don't require admin rights.
ysangkok··on Open source remakes of games you're still loving
Don't forget Warmux. There's OpenLieroX and NiL too, but they're Liero clones instead. Like Worms, but not turn-based.
ysangkok··on Open source remakes of games you're still loving
There is an RA1 reimplementation called OpenRedAlert.
ysangkok··on Open source remakes of games you're still loving
There are many tested evented I/O frameworks for other languages. Node.js is a good thing, but people are hyping this stuff too much.
