yroc92··on Show HN: Relica – Cross-platform local, remote, and multi-cloud file backups
Great questions!

> Can I sign up somewhere to get notified when "back up to your own cloud destinations" is complete?

If you edit your backup, you can create a custom hook (https://relicabackup.com/docs/backup-hooks). We plan to implement email notifications when such events occur as well.

> As great as cloud backup solutions are, the weak point is always getting things out.

We're implementing "Bring your own cloud" now, so you can provide your own S3-compatible, SFTP, Azure, or Google storage (more to come). This feature is almost done.

> Also, trust and security are going to be huge.

Backups are encrypted on the client, and the key is kept on your local device (don't lose it!). We can't access your data, and even your file selection is encrypted.

Hi, I'm Cory. I worked with Matt (who introduced himself above) to make Relica. I can confirm that two humans are attached to this project.
yroc92··on Lambda School Announces $14M Series A Led by GV
I can understand a strategic acquisition, but this is just a long-term investment. I can see how the two companies relate (Stripe loves to be there at the inception of engineering ideas), but I just imagine investing in something that won't return your capital for years to come while you're still strapped for cash being a little... odd?

You must not live in the US then. Housing prices are climbing to all-time highs because of demand.

yroc92··on Instagram launches IGTV (vertical videos platform)
I'm thinking you aren't the target market. I hate vertical video as much as the next guy, but it's very popular amongst the Snapchat and Instagram demographics. I see younger people (including myself) using vertical video very often.

yroc92··on Best Practices with CSS Grid Layout
I've really enjoyed CSS Grid, to the point where I wonder how I ever got by without it. It makes managing complex layouts, or even simple, much easier to manage and control.
yroc92··on Starbucks creates policy on non-paying guests
In my local college town, there was a trendy cafe/restaurant in the middle of the newest, hottest apartment complex. They were so desperate for customers, it was almost palpable. They would badger you about their latest deals if you sat in there. There was tons of space for hanging out, but it was always vacant.

Fast forward to after a new business moved in (a trendy soda shop). They encouraged people to hang out there with game nights, open mic, etc. Suddenly the same location with the same design was the coolest place in town and always packed with paying customers.

I'm not sure why everyone wouldn't think this is the best route, especially at an eatery.

yroc92··on Show HN: Vuido builds desktop apps using Vue.js without Electron
Why don’t I see more “native” applications just running through a locally hosted web server? It’s the best of both worlds: file system access with your server, and a great environment for developing a UI (any browser).

yroc92··on Announcing Caddy Commercial Licenses
It’s me, the other guy. That bio is pretty old, but it was accurate at the time. Caddy required a legal entity a few years ago for several reasons, so we went with “Light Code Labs”. LCL owns Caddy and is the legal entity through which we do business. mholt was (and still is) very concerned about making Caddy sustainable. I am also concerned about this, since I knew that mholt wasn’t going to maintain the project for free forever. So he invited me to join him and help with logistical things (money/taxes, trademarks, etc.), along with some technical things (currently working on an API for Caddy, as well as implementing apt-get with the build server). mholt is his own person, and I am not in a position to coerce him into doing things he doesn’t want to.
