yrcyrc··on Couchers is officially out of beta
Very fond memories of couchsurfing met very nice people both as a traveler and a host. But this was long ago. Not sure this will ever work again though
yrcyrc··on Nvidia's RTX 5050 GPU starts at $249 with last-gen GDDR6 VRAM
Not following much hardware news. What can I do with this or the Intel Arc? Play games? Run AI workload? Genuine question
yrcyrc··on Apple's Liquid Glass is prep work for AR interfaces, not just a design refresh
«If history is any guide, we'll all be using glass-like interfaces within five years, wondering how we ever lived without them». Thanks but no thanks. I’ll keep my current phone until I can’t anymore but that’s it then.
yrcyrc··on Body Doubling
This, absolutely. Can totally relate.
yrcyrc··on Ear muscle we thought humans didn't use activates when people listen hard
Nope. Came here to find such relating experiences and only found yours.
yrcyrc··on Apple and Meta go to war over interoperability vs. privacy
I got rid of all of Facebook and Google apps and services years ago I really hope they won’t get anything as they clearly can’t be trusted with any data. See Noyb.eu for illustration.
yrcyrc··on Human Civilization at critical junction:authoritarian collapse or superabundance
Cant’t get my hands on this one yet but would highly recommend his previous work: « Failing States, Collapsing Systems: BioPhysical Triggers of Political Violence » read it a few times and it still resonates with me.
yrcyrc··on OpenERV
Great thank you
yrcyrc··on OpenERV
Would you have a link/reference?
yrcyrc··on Stop Ignoring Your High Performers
I don’t either. Didn’t mean it that way, sure, interesting point. I could learn that translation layer and I surely tried. But so far it’s been pretty unsuccessful to say the least.
yrcyrc··on Stop Ignoring Your High Performers
Consistently been such a high performer, but being gifted, ADD and on the spectrum made absolutely sure I can’t be politically correct enough to get any form of compensation, approval or recognition commensurate with my achievements. You get used to it I suppose, both a blessing and a curse.
yrcyrc··on EU top court sides with activist Schrems in privacy dispute with Meta
Legend. Well deserved to him and NOYB
yrcyrc··on Show HN: Selectric – macOS Search for Gmail, Outlook, Drive, Slack
Good luck on the launch! Do you plan more connectors? Would love to see Teams, onedrive etc
yrcyrc··on Zero-Click Calendar invite vulnerability chain in macOS
Apple still not paying bounty or needs to be publicly reminded…
yrcyrc··on Launch HN: Martin (YC S23) – Using LLMs to Make a Better Siri
would love this, especially being in the EU where Apple Intelligence fearures might not be released or would need one of the latest devices, but 30$ a month is a big no no for me, i'd rather do my own implementation for a fraction of the price!
yrcyrc··on The flip-flop on whether alcohol is good for you (2023)
Funny he calls it the French paradox. Last I heard of that concept it was about secret services giving up on setting traps to spies whose wives couldn’t give two effs about their husband being unfaithful. “I know and I don’t give a damn”

Otherwise, and being French, we heard it all. Sometimes it’s wine, others it’s butter, cheese, etc when it’s not like “God was born in France” type of thing.

I’m Breton first, Irish second and then eventually French when they’re playing the World Cup, but seriously there are some enzymes, dietary habits and so on that do justify some of the findings.

They used to serve red wine in schools until late 70’s or 80’s can’t remember but there are definitely DNA, habits, regional effects that do come into place I believe.

yrcyrc··on Ask HN: Have you beaten extreme arachnophobia?
Thank you. Been reading about all that but exposure… can’t even see a picture, or when watching documentaries I get so scared I have to leave the room… So extreme.

yrcyrc··on Show HN: Strada – Cloud IDE for Connecting SaaS APIs
Love the idea and will take a look!! One nitpick: the delivery is way too fast on the video. Can barely follow what he says. But I got it in the end.
yrcyrc··on The Shadowy Global Network Vilifying Climate Protesters
I doubt that left-wing think tanks are as powerful or billionaire-backed, or bankrolled by destructive industries. If there's a balance, so-called left-wing groups are probably outpaced 10 to 1.

Shadowy is perfectly apt. The criminalization of protest uses deceptive techniques, out of proportion labeling, smearing, intimidation, the enactment of new laws, its arsenal is quite endless.

Haven't seen any left-wing groups do any of it.

yrcyrc··on Allowing mass surveillance at Olympics undermines EU efforts to regulate AI
It’s insane how this government is hell bent on pushing solutions that were all but outlawed. The mandate covers to the end of 2025, much further than the intended purpose.
yrcyrc··on macOS CLI tool to configure multi-display resolutions and arrangements
I think spectacle app can help. https://github.com/eczarny/spectacle
yrcyrc··on FlightRadar24 crashes due to surge in users tracking SPAR19
Update: She's just landed in Taipei
yrcyrc··on Cheat sheet for if I'm gone
Maybe I just don't see it but how do you keep credentials/such sensitive information secret in an .md on Github?
yrcyrc··on Actions rooted in open source culture can make a big impact
These are important to be better equipped to tackle issues, it's no silver bullet, but in a multi-pronged approach having the right information is detrimental for a meaningful company ESG policy.
yrcyrc··on Listening to songs can cause a physiological response known as “frisson”
Previously reading on this topic and found out only a small percentage of people feel music emotionally. I was very curious, as my experiences are very intense, from frisson to full blown breakdown, chills, crying and overwhelmed completely.

Was recently 'diagnosed' as gifted but there's no explanation as to why I feel music so intensely. Perhaps part of the whole thing, I became an autodidact musician and music is pure bliss to my ears.

yrcyrc··on Cities with Nice Weather
For having lived in Dublin, La Paz and spent quite some time in Reykjavik, there is something really wrong with the data as suggested in earlier posts. I find European cities like Cork and in Brittany would fit to what he is seeking.
yrcyrc··on The Insane Innovation of TI Calculator Hobbyists
Circa 1995/6 was it for me but on Casio calculators [1] There were books devoted to it, I was able to program games, school cheat notes, brilliant memories. [1] https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casio_CFX-9960GT
yrcyrc··on BirdNet – Identify Birds by Sound
Perfect, there are weird birds making a racket every night I needed to identify, timely!
yrcyrc··on Ask HN: Could EU residents comment on how the GDPR has improved their privacy?
Had an old debt I never honoured, but still under law it became invalid and extinct. Yet it gets resold and some specialist companies try to get anything from you, under 'amicable' terms.

They were harassing me, calling etc, and I wondered how they got my details after so long. Made requests for data they held on me, and complained to CNIL about their practices. They dropped everything and are now being investigated by CNIL on how they handle GDPR.
