yoz-y··on Vibecoding Photoshop: Time and pressure
And if you’re in the middle?

I’ve decided to build my alternative because every time there is a prosumer tool I like (Pixelmator, affinity) they get bought out (affinity to canva), or the developers suck (Pixelmator developers cramming all features people wanted into a different “pro” version)

More info in another comment. One of the reasons I’m doing this is to also see how (and if) it is actually possible to build a complex software that I can use.

Tiny tools I’ve made tons, but something that needs actual architecting is different. Image editing is also a middle ground candidate. The output is what matters and is the final test. “Subtle” bugs will not ruin your day as long as you use a periodic backup

So. I’m vibeslopping my photoshop too.

Not yet production ready although working pretty well.

I based it off babl, GEGL and MyPaint. It is binary compatible with gimp through xcf and also supports svg natively.

Since I’m a Mac user it uses metal rendering for speedy painting, gradient and filter previews, then commits changes through GEGL asynchronously. It does work quite neatly.

It already found a couple of bugs in GEGL and Gimp, which I have tucked in patches and tickets. My plan is to go through these manually and do contribute the fixes, if the community accepts them (and if they’re indeed problems) However I don’t think an LLM should send patches.

yoz-y··on An AI agent emailed researchers for help. It told us why
I disagree. For me this shows that people can fall in love with a non-human, and being human is unnecessary for the purpose of giving (some) therapy advice.

LLMs do sound human, I’m not contesting that. But if pressed they will not react as humans. There is an infinite amount of questions that an LLM will answer for which a human would give you a blank stare, told you to shove it or call the police.

The conversation varies between “can’t be” and “isn’t”.

Most sci-fi AIs are way beyond our current models. I’ve yet to see one that would actually pass a Turing test (that said, I’ve not tried models that were post trained to actually try to behave like a human).

Consciousness itself is a term that is not really defined anyway, so depending on each’s take the answer will be different.

yoz-y··on Barcodes are about to go extinct
Yeah, shopping at decathlon feels like stealing honestly. Uniqlo has them too iirc
yoz-y··on Barcodes are about to go extinct
Yeah. But this is a problem this can fix, in theory. Instead of having multiple codes you could just have one with the info for every piece of the chain that needs it.

Sometimes is just nice to have a tab related to an activity, which might involve having two web sites open
yoz-y··on You Are No Longer Invited to Dinner
You don’t need a big house to throw a party. After divorce I decided to relive my teenage years and thrown many parties in a 40m2 apartment. You can easily fit 30 or more people in.
yoz-y··on AX – Google’s Open Agentic Orchestrator
One thing I’d say, is that I find it progressively more interesting/fun to rollout your “everything”. I mean… hello security, but by the time I’ve read somebody’s documentation I’ve already halfway done making thing exactly how I want it.
yoz-y··on I don't like passkeys
I just don’t get how passkeys are supposed to be an improvement.

On any site where I create them the login experience gets worse. Sometimes I get a QR code to scan (terrible, almost never works too). Sometimes I am offered to login with passkey which I have and it doesn’t work. Almost always I need to fallback to password and it just sucks.

I hate passkeys. I wish there was a checkbox somewhere to tell all websites that I never want to use them.

yoz-y··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
It is achievable in theory yes. But it was also achievable without LLMs and yet, here we are.
yoz-y··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
We are not deluding ourselves that we will maintain our standard of living. If the boss’ dream of replacing all workers by AI that does their job poorly but cheaply will be realized. We will go to the gutter with the rest of the economically worthless people.

There are many of them today, their needs are not met (but could be, the production output is largely there, but captured) and their political views don’t matter because the votes are captured by populists. I’m sure the powers that are will find a way to go around educated people voting.

yoz-y··on Chopping up books when they're physically too big
Wow. I’m almost 40 and never knew this!
yoz-y··on Vibe Coding is the new Internet Dating?
For tools I want to have I don’t care. For hobby projects I’ll happily code. The want ebbs and flows.
yoz-y··on Gemini 3.8 Live and 3.8 Live Extended Thinking
For me 3.8 has been good enough that I don’t think I’ll be extending my Claude subscription.

Web version of Twitter has become unusable now. So much so that I wonder why they still keep it.
yoz-y··on Eating Fruit Skins
You're right. Mash with skin is much better!
yoz-y··on Fuck it, make it anyway
Me too I use my apps every day. But the main thing coming out of this is that they are tailored to me. Turning hobbies into hustles is one of the worse things that happened in the post social media days.
yoz-y··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
Yup. Now we have a choice of either using a terrible website with popovers and cookie bars (never remembering the choices) or apps that have insane onboarding, and bombard you with ads through notifications, with zero benefit.
yoz-y··on What algorithm did Windows XP use to choose your initial user picture?
Because it would always return the first match in that case.

You still need to see all of the items once.

Imagine you have 2 items.

First one has 100% chance to be selected. So it does. Then the second has 50% chance to be selected. If it isn’t you effectively chosen the first one and have 50/50 chance to return either.

Now you add a third item. There is 50/50 chance of having either selected. And 1/3 chance of replacing the selection with the new one. Resulting in a 1/3 chance of selecting any of the three. (Because 1/2-1/6 = 1/3) 1/6 because there is 50% chance you will “steal” the selection.

I commute by train. I would never watch a tv show on a phone but watched plenty on my iPad. If the big screen gives you an actual access to “desktop” web, then suddenly more web starts working (the switch in Safari is perfectly useless)

Tmux does not work that well on a tiny screen, and I use it a lot.

yoz-y··on iPhone Duo
I was ready to switch to a foldable. Then they said there is no FaceId and that idea went out of the window. I sure hope they will include it in later versions.
yoz-y··on I'm going back to coding by hand
Power to you!

I started building a Claude which retains some brain power. After each pass it ablates a function or a portion of code and forces you to write it out by hand. My hope is that I can get something that deals with boilerplate and makes me focus on the interesting stuff. We'll see.

> Many people still think AI images output the wrong number of fingers on a regular basis.

Last time I used a frontier image model it made me a seal with three hands so…

yoz-y··on ChatGPT Images 2.5
It would be an improvement, probably, because they are still using Dall.e 1 apparently.
