yoyohello13··on No AI Fridays
Links? What’s the business?
yoyohello13··on No AI Fridays
Objectively, it actually would be beneficial for most people to walk to work once a week…

Also, being intelligent is still important. Enabling the dumbest people in the room to dump their tidal wave of slop on others isn’t really a positive.

yoyohello13··on No AI Fridays
I guess you’re the exception. Congrats
yoyohello13··on No AI Fridays
There was a well known phenomenon people called ‘tutorial hell’ where when learning to program you could understand all the code from tutorials, but when it came time to actually create your own solutions for stuff you got stuck. I think AI is basically enabling eternal tutorial hell, you never actually need to break out of it anymore.
yoyohello13··on The internet is kind of a predatory cesspit now
If my history reading is any indication the answer is ‘getting drunk at the pub’
yoyohello13··on The internet is kind of a predatory cesspit now
Sort of the paradox of humanity. I actually like the majority of people I meet in person. But ‘humanity’ in the aggregate is just fucking terrible and constantly finds new and interesting ways to lower my expectations further.
yoyohello13··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
This is the solution to the Fermi paradox. Civilization just automate themselves into useless meat sacks.
yoyohello13··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
They’ve broken their own record of massive breaking updates in the last year.
yoyohello13··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
If you actually cared. You’d do something about it.
yoyohello13··on Did Meta's Big Settlement Actually Help It?
Paying pocket change over the course of 10 years certainly didn't hurt Meta. So what was the point really? To further embolden companies to do whatever they want and at worst they get a slap on the wrist? The US legal system is a joke.
yoyohello13··on Taylor Farms: How One Company's Reach Became a National Risk
I know this sounds crazy, but maybe we can stop eroding regulations. This obsession with 'regulations bad' is going to destroy us all.
yoyohello13··on AI boosted homework scores, then exam scores dropped: study
Flipped classroom was a popular method when I was teaching math. Some students found it very helpful. The trouble was getting the students to do the reading before class. If students came in unprepared they struggled to keep up.
yoyohello13··on The August 17 outage
Layoffs by the 10s of thousands, food prices out of control, people barely able to afford gas. At least some tech bros can launch their 50th B2B SaaS. I didn't realize a booming economy sucked so much.
yoyohello13··on Tidal Cycles – Live coding music with Algorithmic patterns
The main benefit of strudel is it’s much easier to get started. Maybe it’s changed but when I tried Tidal Cycles a few years ago it was a massive pita to get installed.
yoyohello13··on Malicious Rust crate Arrayref runs a build-time payload
This was actually the main thing that put me off of Rust. I get the argument for a small std lib. I just also don’t agree it’s worth it. Go seems to handle having a batteries included standard lib just fine.
yoyohello13··on Being ambitious and being a dad
It is always funny to read these threads where all the men are saying how you don't need to compromise when they have a stay at home wife keeping it all together. It's a totally different ballgame for the majority of women.
yoyohello13··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
I’ve been on HN long enough to know that a disturbing number of people do actually believe that line and act accordingly.
yoyohello13··on We Are Forking dotenvy into dotenv-ng
Ah, ok. That makes sense.
yoyohello13··on We Are Forking dotenvy into dotenv-ng
Maybe this is a dumb question but what does -ng mean? I see a lot of forks seem to follow the <project>-ng naming convention.
yoyohello13··on AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read)
Wow! that comment you linked speaks to me. I was watching a review video for a game yesterday that was so obviously written by AI it was actually painful to listen to. I started reading the comments and there were several people praising this Youtuber on their great use of metaphor. Literally "subbed because you're such an amazing writer." It actually shook me to my core. If those were real people making those comments, there is no hope for us. I need to believe those were mostly bot comments just to maintain my sanity.
yoyohello13··on uBlock Origin is giving up the fight to keep ads off Facebook
IDK. I haven't interacted with Facebook in over 5 years and my life is better for it. Facebook's value prop to me personally is negative.
yoyohello13··on uBlock Origin is giving up the fight to keep ads off Facebook
Unpopular opinion but if people don’t want to pay for a thing, it’s probably not worth a whole lot to n the first place.
yoyohello13··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
I felt the same thing at 30 and still sometimes feel it now at 36, although to a lesser extent as I've worked on it.

My wife and I have been together 13 years and we found out fairly early that we can't have children. It's taken a lot of internal work to be ok with it, good days and bad. Ironically the same 'not over-thinking it' strategy is the most helpful for my well-being. Just focus on what I can do today.

Seems like kids really are the quickest path to meaning making, it takes a lot of active effort to try to get a sense of fulfillment without them, at least for me.

yoyohello13··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
I wouldn't wear them when I'm walking in the woods or hanging out at home. Having 'incoming car warning', or waypoint nav when I'm biking/running? That would be great!
yoyohello13··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
Tech is so frustrating in real life. I feel like we have all the cool sci fi stuff I always wanted, but everything comes with a monkey's paw style gotcha. The idea of meta glasses is so awesome, I want a heads up display to show me whatever I want. But there is no way in hell I would use them because the company that makes it can’t be trusted.
yoyohello13··on How I use LLMs to learn complex topics
I’ve found that if I’m not struggling I’m not learning. If stuff is coming fast and easy that’s a sign that what I’m doing is not stretching existing skills enough.

It’s true of most things. Running, dieting, weightlifting being uncomfortable is a sign of progress.

yoyohello13··on Silicon Valley misreads science fiction and undermines democracy
Honestly, at this point both the government and private enterprise are fucking me so vigorously I don’t know who to hate more.
yoyohello13··on Silicon Valley misreads science fiction and undermines democracy
I never said government should be in charge of everything or claimed our current government to be perfect. I’m pointing out the prevailing ideology (especially among HN and the rich) that government is incapable of being efficient so we don’t even try. Then we hand over critical services to private enterprise with no checks and balances.

Our current ideology is so skewed toward “gov bad” that the first step toward moderation is acknowledging that it’s possible for government to do things well in the first place.

yoyohello13··on Silicon Valley misreads science fiction and undermines democracy
We seem to be quickly approaching, if we are not already there, a point where you can no longer choose to simply not associate with the billionaires anymore. They have such extreme access to resources and power they essentially control the direction of society whether we want them to or not.
yoyohello13··on Silicon Valley misreads science fiction and undermines democracy
> weren't they right during the Cold War?

Very possible they were right. Hell, I'd agree it's true of the US gov today. If the message was "the government is currently bloated and corrupt, let's fix that" that's great. Today though the message is "government is inherently bloated and corrupt by it's very nature, and therefore unfixable, let's burn it all down" which is not true and actively harmful to democracy.
