youngtaff··on What happened to the Snowden archive
We don’t know whether Assange committed a crime because he refused to go to Sweden to face the rape charges

He did of course commit several crimes under UK law by absconding to the Ecuadorian Embassy

youngtaff··on Why MCP Was Always a Bad Idea?
Well Malte came up with AMP so there’s a history of doing odd things
youngtaff··on We made Playwright 2x faster and 80% more token efficient
Are you using CDP over web sockets or via a pipe?
youngtaff··on No Atlantic hurricanes by Sept. 12 breaks a 60-year record
Thanks I’ll have a proper read of the paper when I’m on a larger device

Generally I’m skeptical of Carbon Capture and Storage schemes (and Hydrogen) as it’s a way for oils and gas companies to delay the transition to cleaner energy

IMV hydrogen does have something of place in industrial processes e.g. reduction of iron ore, and maybe fuel cells but not for general combustion

youngtaff··on Dropping eBPF CPU Cost by About 90% with Memoization (Not AI Gen)
OT but… it’s nice to see someone use a legible font with good character height and line spacing

Makes the post a joy to read

youngtaff··on No Atlantic hurricanes by Sept. 12 breaks a 60-year record
Reading Frontier’s website it’s very unclear how much they’re going to remove and how they’re going to do it - though there’s a lot of mentions of biomass

Trouble with techies is they tend plumb for techie solutions like carbon capture aka ClimeWorks rather than low tech options like trees or seagrass

youngtaff··on Among European Companies That Use a CDN, Nearly 9 in 10 Use Cloudflare
Last I heard (was a few years back) Cloudflare had more enterprise customers than Fastly

Should be relatively easy to work out who uses what CDN

I get your point about the long tail but what’s the value in a government MITM those?

youngtaff··on Among European Companies That Use a CDN, Nearly 9 in 10 Use Cloudflare
Amazon and Akamai is their scale, maybe Fastly too
youngtaff··on Decapitating a MacBook (2025)
There are people “deshelling” Mac Minis and driving them via other power supplies

Here’s an M1 and somewhere in this guys Insta are photos of an M2 which is even easier as the cable is easier

youngtaff··on Google avoids a breakup of its ad tech business
Companies that spin off separate businesses do this stuff all the time, staff up the new business to fill the gaps, license tech from the parent to the new spinoff etc
youngtaff··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
Yes, we certainly need to re-wood uplands in the UK, but we also need to make rivers meander, reintroduce marshes and let place live the Somerset levels flood
youngtaff··on P99 0 ms* autocomplete for 240M domain names
I can see both viewpoints here and don’t have a strong personal view

But for reference browsers fire the keypress event on keyup

youngtaff··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
Reality is much of Northern Europe hasn’t needed air conditioning until about 5 years ago

Throughput the summer my phone regular tells me the temperature is 15°C above the average for the time of year

youngtaff··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
If we move to an electric future then the number of cargo ships should decrease

Something like 40% of all shipping is moving hydrocarbons around the globe

youngtaff··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
We’ve engineered so that rain water goes into rivers and out to sea.

Whereas we really need to slow it down so that it permeates the ground

youngtaff··on Bug Blindness
What does the author have a against a text size that’s readable?
youngtaff··on How Universities Should Prepare Founders
Article also ignore’s that very few founders succeed

Has anyone ever plotted the lifespan of YC companies from each cohort?

Most of them end up dead…

youngtaff··on Fast drilldown dashboards from a single Parquet file
I’d loved to have seen more detail on how the Parquet file was actually built — are there any good resources that cover this?
youngtaff··on I Became the Scapegoat in the Jason Arday Affair
Why did the WSJ give space to this loathsome man?

His hit piece on Arday casts doubt on many claims that have been verified to true since Arday's death

Amongst other things Confas also promoted views that intelligence is related to race https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cevmrjd9lj1o

youngtaff··on Super El Niño Keeps Growing as New Forecasts Reach Record Territory Ahead Winter
Reality is much of Europe hasn’t needed air con until recently

mMy phone tells me that the temperature this week has been 15°C above the long term average for this time of year.

Don’t really need air con when the peak temperature in the past has been 20–25°C

youngtaff··on $580M undersea cable rerouted to avoid the grave of Dobby the House Elf
If you every get the chance, go visit Freshwater West… it's a beautiful part of the world
youngtaff··on The computer that helped win World War II
They weren't all destroyed, some were moved to what became GCHQ (UK's equivalent to the NSA)

See Influence and Fate: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colossus_computer

It's Tommy Flowers I always felt sorry for, after the war he wanted a loan to build a computer was refused on the grounds that what he wanted to build was impossible. He knew it was possible but couldn't disclose that due to secrecy laws

youngtaff··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
I adored my MiniDisc too but the limited storage of a single disk makes it easy to find the music you want

Given how much we can store in solid state not sure I’d want to navigate my library without a screen

youngtaff··on Postmortem of a British Startup: Tract
Lack of tradies is part of the problem but house builders tend to rely on sub-contracting so they don't have to bear the cost of employment, training etc and want someone else to solve the problem for them

House builders essentially buy land, get planning, pay a bunch of sub-contractors to slap together a house and then sell it to some poor sap

Saying they build houses is a bit of a misnomer in my view

youngtaff··on Postmortem of a British Startup: Tract
But what problem does move to the US actually solve in this case?

House builders don't seem to have a problem acquiring land and rights to develop it

Indeed there're permission granted for over 1mn yet to be build residential properties in the UK

The problem is UK house builders drip feed houses on to the market to keep their profits up, and slow down building when house prices fall

youngtaff··on If you want to create a button from scratch, you must first create the universe
<input> with <datalist> can provide a combobox

Missing part is dynamically updating the datalist in an efficient way

youngtaff··on SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
And they claimed their TAM was 20% of world GDP!!!
youngtaff··on SpaceX's newest Starmind will make earth data centers obsolete
> And no, that launch rate does not "wreck the planet".

What's the impact of the atmospheric pollution from both launches and the burn of space craft and satellite's burning up on re-rentry?

youngtaff··on Real-time map of Great Britain's rail network
Although it's a bit rougher design wise I prefer https://traksy.uk/live

Amongst other things it shows all the signalling segments so you can actually see where your train is when waiting e.g. https://traksy.uk/live/T+CDU+BRI+d+@2026-07-06T15:00/S+G1548...
