younata··on Ginger Tech Stack (Realtime + Django)
I get that you want to make a joke.

I also think you need to understand it's not a joke. The fact that there exists "kick a ginger day" [0] is proof that it's not a joke. Abuse is not funny, ever.

I'm sorry, but what are you referring to?
younata··on Show HN: Flutter - Control Spotify or iTunes Using Gestures thru Webcam
That's amazing.

I... wow.

Take my money.

younata··on MPAA Publicly Threatens to Stop Writing Checks
Except that, in the US, bribing congress(wo)men is legal.
younata··on Poll: What keyboard layout do you use?
Dvorak user. I also use vim heavily (I switched to dvorak before I started using vim, so I've always been used to having h,j,k, and l being separated.
younata··on iTunes Connect is closed for the holidays (until Dec 29)
Every iOS developer has been made aware of this for quite some time now. Most of us knew it was coming before it was announced because they've been doing this every year for quite some time now. The itunes connect/app approval team needs a break. They work 51 weeks out of the year, including weekends (I've had an app get approved on a Sunday). They deserve a vacation more than anyone I know.
younata··on Ask HN: What should my first smartphone be?
You (supposedly, I haven't looked into it) can develop for iOS on a windows or linux machine. (I believe the Unreal dev kit works like that - you must develop from a windows machine.) If you're willing to figure out how to do that, I'd suggest an iphone.

If you're set on android, then my recommendation is to get a Nexus.

younata··on Proving you can't make 2011 out of 1,2,3,4
think are doing: reddit, hn, etc.

supposed to be doing: what the post indicates. Grading papers. (dis)proving p != np. (dis)proving one of the other millennium problems.

EDIT: formatting.

younata··on Nest thermostat teardown
and... now I want one. Nest made an excellent PR move by letting Sparkfun do a post of the teardown.

There should be more manufacturers who encourage costumers to take apart and examine their products.

younata··on FalseCall - iOS app for the polite introvert
I'm the creator of the app.

Uses fakecall.net, which was discussed a month ago. [1]

Scott (the creater of fakecall.net) has been immensely helpful in creating this. I really can't thank him enough.

younata··on Good UX in the Wild: Dropbox's attention to detail on their download page
Techies forget how something as trivial as downloading and running a file can be a huge deal for the average user.

I learned today that one of my friends (up until this past summer) thought that the internet was something on her computer.

I hold this person in high regard as one of the most intelligent people I know, she just doesn't know computers.

younata··on Mythbusters experiment goes awry, sends cannonball through two houses
You have described my parents. I can't stand to be in the same building with them when they talk about anything politics related.

Also known as 60 Senators are required to vote to force him to stop.
younata··on Student Loan Debt: Who Are the 1%?
Depends on the type of loan. I have friends with non-government loans, and for them, interest starts accumulating the instant they take the loan.
younata··on How I survived one week without an adblocker
My 'adblock' is simply not having flash enabled. I haven't seen a particularly annoying ad in ages.

> Thus, it is more illegal for me to go and buy a DVD which I then play on my Linux laptop than it is for me to just torrent it.

Huh. I have several hard drives filled up with dvds that I've ripped. I always that it was at least slightly less illegal (if not completely legal) for me to do that than it would be for me to just torrent the content.

On the other hand, I'm in the US, so things may be completely reversed here.

younata··on How Dropbox Got Its First 10 Million Users
It was obviously some rather sophisticated speech-to-text program that didn't realize that "ycombinator" is what he meant in the video

The actual article is rather good.

younata··on Google+ launches ‘Ripples’ visualisation
What he means is, on a mac when you use two-finger together in a swiping motion, it'll scroll whatever document the mouse is on.

The google stuff (eg maps) has it where if you do the two-finger swiping motion, instead of scrolling, it'll zoom. Which is incredibly annoying.

younata··on Easy To Cancel makes it Easier to Sign Up
Isn't it also easier to implement if you don't force the customer to go through a rather long and annoying cancel form?

Win-win for the developer and the user, then.

younata··on Protect IP Renamed E-Parasites Act; Would Create The Great Firewall Of America
People have been breaking copyright law for ages. The only thing that has changed is that it's easier to break copyright law. It's a trade-off really. As you make content easier to create and distribute, you will inevitably make it easier to break copyright law.

The argument against this law is that it's better to have content be easier to create and distribute, and worth the trade-off.

younata··on The $36 soda: Overdrafting in America
He probably doesn't keep active tabs. I doubt he wakes up and says "I wonder what <my name> bought yesterday" (if he did, that'd many boring weeks, followed by a day where I went grocery shopping).

as caw[1] said, it's really more so that he can easily transfer money to the account in the event I need it.

younata··on The $36 soda: Overdrafting in America
This is precisely why I have USAA as my bank.

I was originally going to get a Wells Fargo account, but that changed when I decided to go to uni in Florida - before the wachovia merger happened. My father decided that not being able to keep tabs on my account was a dealbreaker, so I ended up getting a USAA account.

Worked out for the best, because USAA has some of the best customer service in the industry.

younata··on In defence of Objective-C
This is why I do most of my editing with objective-C in xcode, while I do most of my editing with python in vim.

Tab completion of methods is very nice to have, and makes using xcode as fast as using vim for me. (now, if I could have vim keybindings with xcode tab-complete, then I'd rocket through my editing...)

younata··on How to use epoll? A complete example in C
Don't have an example, but I've come to really like kqueues (Freebsd's equivalent to an epoll). I heard they were ported to linux as part of getting GCD to run on it, but I haven't done any research on it.
younata··on Who killed videogames?
I disagree. I play tf2 quite a bit, and have been playing since before the free to play update. I actually started playing more often since the free to play update, because my friends who didn't want to spend $20 on the game can now play.

Other than the (rather common) offers of trade from people wanting my earbuds [1], I'm finding that I'm coming across players who are as skilled or more skilled than I am. I'm actually learning how to better play the game.

My enjoyment of the game has increased since TF2 went free to play.

[1] http://www.teamfortress.com/macupdate/earbuds/ My response to offers of trade for my earbuds is to ask for $600 in return, which is about the cost of a new mac mini.

younata··on What does "it's a good start" really mean.
> I have Dropbox account #314

Did you wait until they had 313 accounts before you signed up, or was it by random chance?

Excellent.

It'll be interesting to see how this and the ai-class will affect my performance in my other classes.
