yonz··on Ask HN: Scam from `service@paypal.com` email, How?
Two reasons why its not a proper invoice. 1) I checked the mobile app, web page and any mention of this on my account and it never made it there.

2) The format of the email leads me to question it, the top part has the text: " Hello, Suspicious transaction of $399.90 detected. If not done by you contact Fraud Investigation team at +1 (833) 902-0431 to cancel. Service hours(9AM-6PM) Email cs-billings@hilton.com"

Is there a free HTML text field for sending invoice? And how did the break out of the email box and get to the top. This would be easier with a picture.

yonz··on Ask HN: Scam from `service@paypal.com` email, How?
Couldn't fit it in the 4k char limit. It is for sure a scam and I actually called the number and they have an operating person ready to pretend to be from Hilton. All in all it is the best phishing campaign I have witnessed to date. Even email header verification through email app came through cleam.

Here's your invoice Marquis Pleasants sent you an invoice for $399.90 USD

NoSQL is definitely a breeze for data model use cases like that.

Thanks for sharing your experience, what was the app? Personally, I don't think I would have gone through the trouble as well. For example, I used to have a ton of Evernote entries and don't think I would setup a personal CouchDB just to get access to it.

A middle ground could be a file path to an sqlite file that can be copied, opened or backed up in the cloud.

Yonz here, I run the community and can be blamed for the 20+ swipes at the discord choice. We started in February 2023, and it has been amazing to see the now ~1k developers coming together and building awesome collaborations like Tinybase + Cr-sqlite.

Yes, we need a community platform aligned with our mission, but it is already hard enough to get people together. Before the website or the discord, it was just a bunch of people following each other on Twitter and a few disparate talks. Starting from there and asking new joiners to set up a new platform adds prohibitive friction. 'There is a platform for that is not enough'; we need most interested folks to also be on it.

A matrix bridge makes perfect sense, but I haven't had the time to set it up.

Read this first: https://www.inkandswitch.com/local-first/

> Anyone who's worked inside a large organization knows the cloud is the solution to be able to get things done and deliver value to the business.

Local first is focused on end consumer experiences and is orthogonal to the on-prem vs cloud argument; ideally there wouldn't even be a server. @pvh and i&s team have done a great job threading the needle in articulating the ideology. At a high level it is advocating for products that can provide the benefits of the cloud without being locked on or turning your phone into a paper weight if it doesn't have internet access.

This is interesting, been putting off setting up a discord <> Matrix bridge but will have to tackle this.
yonz··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
"Quite a few people in business have paired a liberal arts undergrad degree with an MBA. They seem to do just fine. But I think that’s a missed opportunity—much better would be an MBA on top of an engineering or math undergraduate degree. People with that combination are invaluable, and there aren’t nearly enough of them running around."

I needed to read that today, (Purdue computer eng + Harvard MBA here)

yonz··on BlockSuite: An open-source Notion-like editor with multiplayer support
The in page add database holds amazing promise, how can I reference a record that I create in the database? Lets say I have a block with a database [User|Title] and I want to refer to a value TasksDb[user=yonz].title. or something.

We had the pleasure of hosting one of the co-founders at our latest local first meetup https://lofi.software, feel free to checkout the recording https://www.youtube.com/live/Z0nzsxhoToo?feature=share The team has put in a lot of background effort to allow for a seamless https://affine.pro app using blocksuite

yonz··on Ask HN: Discord broadcast keeps f'n up. Any tips?
Maybe Holepunch's https://keet.io/ is the way to go, definitely inline without our local first mission.

yonz··on Launch HN: Fuse (YC W19) – Unified API for financial data aggregators
Forgive me if this is dumb, but is Fuse connect a direct route to connect to banks orthogonal to third party aggregators? Is there a way to say no third parties?

My priorities are privacy first then wider coverage for bank accounts. I'd rather some consumers are blocked form accessing the service than having their transaction data getting leaked to intermediaries.

yonz··on Launch HN: Fuse (YC W19) – Unified API for financial data aggregators
Maybe orthogonal but I am looking for a financial one api proxy that doesn't store my customers' data (only routes them). Do you have any plans to have a Fuse native aggregator that doesn't scrape customer transactions?

I don't use any product that forces me to use Plaid because they copy my transaction info. If anyone knows of aggregators that respect privacy please share them, AFAIK there are none.

yonz··on FCC Launches New ‘Privacy and Data Protection Task Force’ [pdf]
Is it just me or is it more focused on breaches than privacy? Consumers need some sort of a collective voice to counter the continuing erosion of privacy and disregard for user data control.

yonz··on Sniffnet: Open-source, cross platform application to monitor network traffic
Past attempts at mentioning rust didn't work. Hard to tell what makes a thing get to front page.

https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&qu...

I am excited to try out sniffnet, I have given up on using burp, activity Monitor and Wireshark to investigate running connections. Sometimes you just need to feel good about a random process that has an outbound connection.

yonz··on I wrote a static web page and accidentally started a community
To folks interested in Local First (LoFi) software, join us on our upcoming meetup tomorrow (May 30th) at 2PM ET.

Details are on our home page: https://localfirstweb.dev/

We will be hearing from:

1) Christopher (co-creator of react-native)

2) Aaron (Helped build Google Chrome)

3) Kyle (11+ JS books and over 800,000 of dev tutorial viewing time)

Hope to have you join our motley community dedicated to re-inventing how consumer products are built.

yonz··on Replacing Electron with react-native-destop – FB Messenger
Most promising part of the article- "With Meta’s adoption of React Native Desktop, we are working together with Microsoft to continuously contribute improvements to the React Native macOS and Windows GitHub repositories."

yonz··on Do LLMs Understand User Preferences? Evaluating LLMs on User Rating Prediction
I've often pondered the idea of semantic recommendation but it is a dynamic problem with an aversion for repetition. I am looking forward to digging into this paper. A big question for me is if you can successfully avoid repeating different coverage while maximizing affinity.
yonz··on Local First Meetup: James Arthur CEO of ElectricSQL – Tuesday 2PM ET
Meetup: Tuesday April 25, 2023 @2PM ET

Community Discord Link: https://discord.gg/lfwdev

Talk Details:

At https://electric-sql.com/ we're working on a local-first software platform that syncs between Postgres in the cloud and SQLite on local devices. As part of this, we've dug into different models for controlling what data syncs on and off device, from pinned queries to whole database sync and various options in between. Through this we've explored a bunch of interesting challenges, like how to do discovery queries when you don't have the whole dataset and the integrity challenges with partial replication boundaries.

In this talk, I'm proposing to:

o Introduce the types of application patterns/architecture we've been looking into

o walk through the range of different sync models we've explored;

o discuss their implementation challenges

o discuss their impact on user experience and data integrity

yonz··on Clocks and Causality – Ordering Events in Distributed Systems (2022)
Nice write up, have you looked at Conflict free replicated relations?

We have been discussing Lamport clocks and CRDTs in the context of building local-first applications in our LocalFirstWeb discord https://lfw.dev.

Causality approximated with temporal proximity is a nice way of putting it. I've been trying to wrap my mind around an append only DAG to represent user actions so that multi account, multiuser and multi device experiences can run offline and get to eventually consist state when synced.

Got down voted for my comment, save yourself.

I am still figuring out participating in HN conversations but this downvote seems excessive no?
