yogi123··on Ask HN: Why isn’t there an open source Google with pick your algorithm?
For example, with a marketplace of search algorithms for different use cases that people can submit and which could be rated or ranked like browser extensions.

yogi123··on New York Is Confiscating Delivery Bikes, Hurting Immigrants, And Helping No One
I’m wondering how many commenters here actually live in NYC. Delivery bikes are a menace. A 20-something guy in my building recently started hopping around on crutches. Athletic guy. Got hit by a food delivery bike and fractured his leg. I have a near miss at least once a week. They’re like darts that pop out of nowhere even on sidewalks, at full speed, sometimes swerving at the last second. Zero respect for any traffic laws. It’s especiaily dangerous if you have a dog as I do, esp when crossing a street, bc a bike can slice into the leash in the space between you and your dog, since the bikes pop out of nowhere so fast. I’m exceedingly cautious at night now in scanning around me at crosswalks.
yogi123··on Can Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes Fend Off Her Critics?
I work at a hedge fund and spend most of my time shorting stocks, especially healthcare/biotech/pharma stocks given the plethora of fraudulent companies in that space. I remember reading about Theranos several years even though it's private, and thinking there is no way this thing is not a fraud. I predict this will eventually be revealed as the biggest fraud ever in silicon valley. It just checks off way too many fraud boxes, based on my personal pattern recognition.
yogi123··on Why investors don’t fund dating
Funny thing is that dating as a primary use case led to the creation of social networks in the first place: Friendster -> Facebook (poking, checking out classmates) -> $223 billion market cap.
yogi123··on Why Startups Need to Focus on Sales, Not Marketing
What's the reason for the gratuitous insult to people with an mba? It's quite a prevalent theme on HN. I'm an mba, and it's an offensive stereotype. I've noticed over the years that it's one of the more common strawmen that commenters like to use on HN. I did an mba at Harvard many years ago, and I would suggest that the level of entrepreneurial hustle among a typical cohort is far higher than that in a typical engineering program. It doesn't take much googling to find lists of mba's who've founded prominent companies in the valley or elsewhere. Anyone doing that would discover that your slam is nothing more than ignorance or just plain bias for whatever reason.

yogi123··on Google Acquires Titan Aerospace, The Drone Company Pursued By Facebook
The behavior of public technology companies that throw off lots of cash is entirely predictable. They are utterly shitty allocators of capital, esp when run by "visionaries." Some easy predictions:

-This acquisition will have zero to negative return on investment, just like Motorola.

-Oculus acquisition for 2B will have zero to negative return on capital

-WhatsApp will have zero to negative return on capital

The abuse of shareholder cash at cash-rich tech companies like Apple, Facebook, and Google is quite breathtaking to observe.

yogi123··on LSD, Reconsidered for Therapy
The most prominent researcher in LSD therapy was Stan Grof. Look up his books - they are the definitive material for psychiatric work using psychedelics. There are experiences in the books that will blow your mind. I believe he was head of the psychiatry department at Johns Hopkins, before this research was shut down.

However, it is interesting that he now appears to be a proponent of meditation and other methods, as far as I know. He teaches an interesting technique called holotropic breathing which aims to replicate the benefits without the risk.

I think a prominent meditation teacher summed it up best when he said that psychedelics can lead to a powerful opening, but they are not a path.

yogi123··on Depression is an inflammatory disease; where does inflammation come from? [pdf]
Recent articles have tied omega 3 intake to increased risk of prostate cancer. Got a lot of press last year. I took Omega 3 for the last 14 years. Spent thousands buying Nordic Naturals from Whole Foods at $25/bottle. Whenever I'd stop taking it, I felt a decline in mood so thought it had good systemic benefits. When I went off it this time, I felt zero change before or after (haven't taken since last summer).

This study was the last straw. I'd already given up supplements and even a daily multivitamin as studies indicate no positive effect and possible harm. Now I take no supplements. The more I read the more I'm convinced it's faulty science and marketing. A healthy, varied diet of mainly plant based foods should provide all that most people need. If you look at links to omega 3 studies on Wikipedia I don't recall there being conclusive positive evidence, but maybe I'm wrong. Couple of links on prostate cancer study and whether it's accurate or not:
