yodon··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
The SR-71 is cool, but this article is not at all confidence inspiring on many fronts.

Guy being interviewed by a reporter about a secret project. A secret project that is trying to resurrect an antique plane that has been subject to weather and on display as a museum piece for many years.

It sounds like a clown-show staged around a cool looking plane that's older than 90+% of HN readers.

yodon··on Show HN: Museum of Numbers
> 2147483647

It's also known as the most common phone number on the web[0], because of programmers trying to store phone numbers as 32 bit integers, and hitting overflow.

yodon··on Show HN: Durable Actor Session Protocol
My question wasn't about transport - it's more do I have to repeatedly poll for events, or can I make a request that effectively subscribes me to a stream of events.
yodon··on Show HN: Durable Actor Session Protocol
Is this purely polling, or am I missing how to subscribe to events?
yodon··on Show HN: I checked 1M free proxies – 1 in 5 working ones injected scripts
As a real question, why would anyone provide a free proxy other than as a criminal or monetize-the-user-some-other-way scheme? Someone needs to pay the costs of providing that service (even if they are exploited via a cracked 3rd party enterprise).
yodon··on Two and a half years without a gallbladder
> What would be the sypmtoms?

Of an infected gallbladder?

Don't worry - the pain is so incredibly intense, there is zero chance you'll not be aware of it, regardless of how high you think your pain tolerance is.

yodon··on Cloudflare Quick Tunnels
That's handled by all the prior releases of cloudflare tunnels
yodon··on GitHub is having trouble counting things
>EEE

My god what an ancient trope.

Presumably you realize most current Microsoft employees were not even alive when the EEE memo was written.

Must we also talk about some decision Henry Ford made in 1906 every time the automaker is mentioned, or something the Gauls did in 200 BC every time England is mentioned?

yodon··on Show HN: Most Penalized HN Stories
So, maybe it's a huge conspiracy, or, alternatively, maybe it's a case of a person who attempted to reverse engineer the HN ranking algorithm missing a couple terms in the equation.

Everyone can apply their own form of Occam's Razor. Some will conclude conspiracy, others, missed second and third order terms.

yodon··on Show HN: Graphify C# – Compiler-accurate Find Usages for coding agents
I don't understand why Microsoft and JetBrains aren't shipping versions of this. It seems like exactly what Roslyn was designed for
yodon··on What will our economic future look like?
I try to never be that guy who complains about the way a web page scrolls, but this page is completely unreadable.
yodon··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
Obligatory xkcd: https://xkcd.com/2347/
yodon··on Christmas Village shoppers no longer will be allowed to enter booths
>I presume the lecturer read from a script.

You presume wrong. No college professor will waste the amount of time required to fully write out everything they will say in class in advance. Notes, yes. Detailed notes, not unlikely. Full script to be read verbatim, nope.

yodon··on Paint.net 5.2 alpha now runs on Linux
This is via Wine, so presumably it should also run on Macs now.

Paint.net is the only thing I miss from my days on Windows machines, so super excited about this!

yodon··on GitHub Down Again?
Commit is failing in the US.

githubstatus.com is currently green.

yodon··on A spy satellite simulator in the browser, except the data is real
This would be impressive work for a mid sized game studio. Free, real, and from a solo dev is incredible.
yodon··on The "File" menu isn't about files
That's how language works. Eavesdropping once referred to water dropping off the eaves of a roof. There is mostly no "log" that "logging in" writes to. The menu itself has nothing to do with food or eating. Is the meaning clear to contemporary readers or listeners? Yes.
yodon··on Hook, hold, harvest and hide: Meta's alleged strategy laid out in first week
>Microsoft actually said it

Not quite

yodon··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
>Are you saying in the eventuality that...

Legal cases are adjudicated by human judges who have been dealing with scenarios like this for thousands of years, since long before the invention of software and laptops, and who are not the least bit challenged when presented with strawman scenarios like the one you called out.

yodon··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
> Can you provide a statute number for this crime please? Any federal or even state statute will do

The google search required to find the answer ("federal statute for destruction of evidence") is shorter than your question here.

"Whoever knowingly alters, destroys, mutilates, conceals, covers up, falsifies, or makes a false entry..."[0]

yodon··on Copyright does not protect AI-generated content in EU
There was some related discussions of US law recently[0].

yodon··on Who owns the code?
I know we're just supposed to upvote and downvote here, but every now and then there's a comment that feels like it deserves an actual thank you for the effort that went into it.

So thank you, for pulling together exactly the kind of details I've looked for but hadn't been able to find.

yodon··on Cloudflare's AI Psychosis
Cloudflare's UI is basically the web equivalent of the git CLI.

Powerful, but the densest collection of UI anti-patterns known to man.

Their "designers" obviously walked up hill both ways in the snow to school every day while being eaten by a walrus and feel anyone who doesn't enjoy a suitably opaque navigation scheme isn't worth acknowledging.

yodon··on Ask HN: How do you keep up with HN these days?
Huge fan of https://serializer.io as a help with this.

It shows you what is new that you haven't seen, then lets you move on so you're not digging through the same stories repeatedly. No account or registration required. Syncs across all your machines if you want to (just use the randomly generate heroku-style link). Defaults to showing you a few sites, which you can edit with a few clicks in the menu. Easy, lightweight, totally changed my life when I found it.

yodon··on "That's not SOC 2 compliant"
> What is less clear here is approvals

This. My understanding is that SOC2 does require approvals (eg 2nd person reviews/approves the code change). This approach doesn't seem to include that step. Is that not a requirement?

yodon··on Implant – an extension to VS Code that exposes its APIs to coding agents
I don't understand why Microsoft and JetBrains haven't already done this. I don't need an IDE for myself anymore, but I'd sure like my agents to be able to right-mouse-click and refactor a method deterministically
yodon··on Show HN: See every Google ad any company is running (free, no signup)
Google doesn't ship an API for general purpose ad transparency data, so various 3rd party services exist to fill the gap (like this one?).

For anyone interested in this space, see for example [0].

yodon··on Show HN: Lightweight, S3-compatible object storage server
This looks pretty amazing, but it also looks like it's essentially one dev with no business model.
yodon··on LG to ban residential proxies from smart TV apps
If other non-Android-based TV manufacturers follow, this will have a much bigger impact on the spread (and cost) of scraping than either Anubis or Cloudflare.
yodon··on The Psychology of Software Teams
Giant cookie banner says "Do not sell my personal information" + "switch the toggle to opt out".

Which is it? Am I switching the toggle to opt out of selling my personal information or am I switching it to opt out of NOT selling my personal information?

I shouldn't have to read a paragraph of fine print to tell if they are intentionally using a dark pattern or merely incapable of composing a simple declarative sentence.

It's a shame, because it looks like an interesting book.
