ynac··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (June 2026)
Absolutely tried that. The tin gave up faster than Khalid at Zanzibar. It looked like Popeye used his pipe on it. It was a cheap 1384, so single wall and cardboard were the only resistance.

Since posting, I got it running, PTO and deck line up great, fuel filter is clean and clear, it runs better than it has in years.

ynac··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (June 2026)
3 hours trying to remove an oil filter from tractor. Chain clamp mishaped it, I ended up shredding it, ripped out the innards, all the tin down to the intake rim (yes, shredded metal everywhere) until finally used needle nose spread open in two of the intake holes and a plummers wrench for torque finally loosened it.

Reading Brand's quick little life changer kept me going with surprisingly few cuss fits:

The Maintenance of Everything: https://search.worldcat.org/title/1511798465

Thanks, Stew!

ynac··on Heathkit: America's Biggest Loss [video]
OP Here: Sharing this as I was just reading through the camera lens repair article on the front page:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48420148

And it made me wonder about a what pathways are still available for a HeathKit-ish revival. Between ESP flashers, swapping from really busted up originals for parts, and hacking for a new use...seems like there is already a culture out there waiting for another "accident" like Heathkit to happen.

I'll be noodling on this in the notebook for sure. Listing resources, possible kits, allies, etc.

ynac··on The new bibliomaniacs
The signs sure seem to be indicating a Gen Z rollback to the analog and middle tech. Newspapers, books, cursive clubs, letter writing (pen pals), cassettes and albums, printed photographs, even carb/gas based auto hacking. These are just in my circle, but I have seen stories in the paper too. Anyone else seeing interesting trends from the youngers? I especially like to see the blending of new and old - like building a music server for VLPFM neighborhood station, hyper local phone co, text clubs on paper, etc.
ynac··on I’ve built a virtual museum with nearly every operating system you can think of
Where is EMACS?
ynac··on Leaving the Physical World
Anyone see a link to the audio / video, or better transcription? The text seems to have been transcribed and the typos / mistakes are splitting the intended meanings of things. Some of which seem to be causing misunderstandings in here. (Dialup for the day here, or I'd do it myself)
ynac··on The Science Behind Honey's Eternal Shelf Life (2013)
To some degree and depending on the brew style, mead is also a very very long ager. Plenty of stories of finding vessels in archaeological digs - still ready for a sip. I still have some bottles from my first batches of mead back in the 90s, and I have to say, they continue to evolve slightly - especially given how hot they were when I was a beginner.
ynac··on Voice Modems
Similar setup for me as well. Later I copied the rig for a long distance and out-of-country call back system to save money. Loved that modem...
ynac··on Category Theory Illustrated – Orders
I once saw a man with a notebook and pencil drawing these kinds of diagrams, at the time I saw them as graph theory. I wasn't in an extrovert moment and missed my chance to ask. He seemed to be working recreationally on them. I'm wondering about puzzles that could be easily created using these theories / maths. You, practitioners, any suggestions?
ynac··on The SondeHub Tracker
Just added this to my Radar category. Along with ADSB, trains, boats, HeatMap, local weather stations, NOAA's solar weather, power outage trackers, quakes and fire. Anyone have any interesting things they track?
ynac··on Netflix Prices Went Up Again – I Bought a DVD Player Instead
Big ups on that! Not to mention your local library's collection of DVDs. Or, their inter-library loan system for the ultra weird and rare.

One note on Kanopy - they use a ticket system (10-15 tickets per library customer). So if you have a couple people in your household, all of your library card numbers contribute tickets to the login. And, if you have two library systems like we do here (KCLS and SPL) you can double dip on all the cards again. No hack required - Kanopy actually has a very nice way of failing over to other cards as your quota is used up.

And if that's not enough, try Scarecrow Video out of Seattle. They are the masters of physical digital film media right now. It's fun to try to stump them. And they provide mailorder system similar to the old red envelopes of NetFlix.

eBay has DVD collections go up for sale all the time. Fun to buy the "box of movies" for $100 and see what you get.

Another big haul for me is from local thrift stores - usually 50 cents to 2 bucks a disc.

ynac··on Linkding: A self-hosted bookmark manager
I've been working on mine on and off, tweaking and breaking it for years. I feed mine into a static HTML home page that's roughly based on the original index pages (e.g. Yahoo!)

My general categories are:

Libraries Sounds News Health Radar Shopping Movies School Tools Money

Somehow, these seem to work for me. The automated side is fun to work on, but ultimately, I end up manually updating once in a while as changes are needed. I just added a page linked from the home page - Libraries - that leads to categorized "reading list" of articles, sites, things to follow / explore. That's where the real potential for automation is for me, and where I keep failing to deliver it just right.

I'm going to comb through Linkding for clews to my failure and my ultimate success.

ynac··on In Criminal Cases, Moss Is Often Underfoot and Overlooked
As anyone who is a phan of the bryphyte knows, looking and watching these plants up close it's fascinating to see how they are really forests in miniature. From the tall trees of their sporophytes, to the low protonema that collect debris and spore.
ynac··on Tell HN: Apple development certificate server seems down?
Any other services down for anyone? I've had a credit service portal fail for hours today with a notice of server issues. As well as a credit union login with a similar message. These are all first times for me. Some big black cape / hat pressure testing?

[edit] And FreeUSATax portal. Solar cone today?

ynac··on Why the US Could Blame AI for Blowing Up the Iranian School
Kinda right there at #1. Explanations are one thing, but Humans have to own it. We'll see!

The DoD AI ethics principles adopted 2020

1. Responsible – Humans remain accountable for AI development, deployment, and outcomes.

2. Equitable – AI should minimize unintended bias and discrimination.

3. Traceable – AI systems must be transparent, auditable, and understandable.

4. Reliable – AI must be safe, secure, and perform as intended.

5. Governable – Systems should detect and avoid unintended consequences and be able to be disabled if necessary.

ynac··on Worldwide Sidewalk Joy: Adding whimsy to neighborhoods
We've got a free art exchange box on main street in town. Always fun to see what's in there. Never empty and always different. Maybe it's from reading Capitalism by Beckert, but libraries, art exchanges, fix it parties, and other GNP lowering activity really feels awesome.
ynac··on Fontcrafter: Turn Your Handwriting into a Real Font
We had a science teacher in 7th grade whose teaching style was all overhead notes. She'd give us time to copy them into our spiral bounds or 3-rings and when we were all done, she'd swap for the next slide.

She didn't lecture but she did tell stories about her farm, hunting, and occasionally some science. We could ask questions and tell stories if we finished copying the notes before everyone else was done. So, one of the takeaways from her class was getting very efficient and neat with my writing. I tried to write in a clean all caps and eventually learned which strokes were best for speed and spacing. I still use that hand-font and I always think of her sitting on the wall radiator laughing through some story of trying to fix a bad situation.

ynac··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (March 2026)
* Remote viewing stock market trading programs - One version is with a buddy who shows me a colored board depending on the outcome for the week. The other is a solo version using a Swift app on Mac. We're just out of buggy beta (the analog version was laughably more difficult to get clean. We'll see if either works and which one wins.

* Telephone handset for my mobile phone with side talk.

* First draft of a book / workbook on Work Flow. Outcrop of the work flow consulting I do, stuff I've learned, and so on.

* Short film script - trying to convince a local actor to play the lead before we lose the rainy season here - otherwise we'll need special effects or just wait until the fall.

* Polishing firmware, OSX, and iOS suite for a wearable neuromodulator unit. Deadline in a week!

* Nmemonic community and app - been poking at this for years and finally had a breakthrough on the UI. My first app to release in the wild, so pretty exciting.

ynac··on Show HN: ANSI-Saver – A macOS Screensaver
It was a weird time frame. My partner was living in the house, and I was moving to Seattle. The backup was pretty much inches from the system itself. Not the last time I learned that lesson. But, the original SCSI drive did survive, even if the machines and desk and couches, etc. were all ruined. With HTML coming along we didn't rebuild. It's still seems like such a huge loss not having entities like BBSs on the internet. Just like the loss of IRC and other basic systems / plumbing of the capital I Internet. Yeah, they needed upgrades, but that's what IETF, RFC, and scrappy hackers are for. <sigh> Loving on the ANSI!
ynac··on Show HN: ANSI-Saver – A macOS Screensaver
You're inspiring me to attempt a rescue of my last BBS (MajorBBS system) from 1991-1993. It had some great ANSI room and section screens. It was run from a single 1GB(!!) drive that cost us $1000. We had email, a couple stores (one of the first online book stores) and store-n-forward mail systems, maybe finger and telnet(?). Unfortunately, a neighbor got stoned, had a cigarette in bed and burned up his house and ours. Nobody hurt, but the BBS wasn't backed up offsite.
ynac··on I'm 60 years old. Claude Code has ignited a passion again
Just checked out MoveOMeter.com Great idea - and I get how pitching to "an old coot" like my parents would get a laugh out of them before an insulting hurtful pass. Very clever positioning - I'd lean in on that. Your audience is there and waiting - which is tricky since your customer is actually the sales person and you need to give them the training up front to close the deal with their elder. Nice work!
ynac··on Tell HN: I'm 60 years old. Claude Code has re-ignited a passion
Same here - it's like programming with a couple of buddies. Occasionally they goof off and wreck everything, but we put it back together and end up with a finished project. I'm literally going through my backlog of projects from the early 80s! There are parts of each of these projects that were black holes for me - just didn't know enough to get a toe hold. With Karl (that's my agent) he explains everything I don't understand, does stuff, breaks stuff, and so on. It's really a blast.
ynac··on Ask HN: Anyone else feel this community has changed recently?
It has felt that way lately, but I can't say it is limited to HN. It's pretty tough to have a conversation last for more than a few minutes without it ending in a political discussion, a news item that isn't good, or a local issue that isn't good. A only slightly less than world war can do that. On top of that is the AI thing. Not going to unpack that here, but yeah, exciting and kind of crappy at the same time.

What I'm about to say isn't meant to be mean, but all you said up there? That's on you. That's all you. Keep doing the right thing with your votes and downvotes. Keep trying to come up with that great startup project and build it out and find an audience. Use AI to make you better, smarter, and stronger. Tolerate the ignorant and the different. Pfft...what does it matter anyway what we think of a goofball mouthing off about the remake of Like Water for Chocolate?

Take care of your self and find more fun stuff! If that means taking a vacation from HN, do it. I took a year off a while back and it did wonders. Also dumped most news. Even now, I'm writing Atari 800 programs for the next two days as a small retreat myself.

Yes, the world is on a little decline right now. That just means there's a chance coming to fix things, and the time to prepare for it just happens to be NOW! Be ready! If you do drop off HN, drop me a line and stay in touch!

ynac··on New imagery suggests U.S. responsible for Iran school strike
Agreed with others here...and updating intel for primary targets is customary. Which obviously didn't happen here. The targeting cycle and the F2T2 cycle, dynamic targeting loops (probably) should have brought the latest intel about the school to light.

As for whether it was AI - the US DOD Ethic's first tenent is Responsible - personnel remain responsible...

ynac··on Ask HN: How many of you hold an amateur radio license in your country?
Newbie here! Still shopping for elements of my system. : )
ynac··on Show HN: Swarm – Program a colony of 200 ants using a custom assembly language
My "hello world" for a new stack is always a version of Worm. Somewhere between Life and your Swarm, Worm wanders around looking for food and water, trying to avoid birds and other issues. Each round the worm survives it grows by a segment. If it doesn't get food or water, it is reduced a segment. And so on. Your Swarm is a few levels up from my iterations, totally inspirational! Thanks!
ynac··on The government uses targeted advertising to track your location
I hope you don't go! It's clearly a minority position you hold, but that doesn't mean it's a bad one. Or wrong. I've been perplexed by this and many other related issues. I wonder and hope every year, every step in the wrong direction that gets attention, we'll get to that magic 3% that stands up and corrects things for citizen good. No matter how your up or down votes end up in a few hours, know you aren't alone or wrong. At least from my point of view.
ynac··on Global Consciousness Live Data
I've messed around with remote viewing and GC data for stock trading systems. Less for the profit than just to have a separate system for balance. It's fascinating stuff. It's not nothing, and yet it's just so weird. And, it divides / scares people instantly. If this isn't on your list of resources or area of interest, give it a look!
ynac··on 19th century silent film that first captured a robot attack
Going on the list! Thanks!

It reminds me of a story I was told about a certain vault in Hollywood that contained hundreds of priceless films that were destroyed in a fire...but they locked up the vault and pretended everything was fine. And to this day...
