Agree with that. I find it opinionated but I gotta say I like it. I find some of the ideas (such as his lecture from YC startup class 'Competitions is for losers') from the books are a bit hard to accept and makes me thing for a while.

Most of us (younger generation) living in the country think this is ridiculous. But these kind of things are not a surprising thing to us because government do whatever they want to do. It is pretty bad few years back. They can send someone to jail by making up some laws and giving no excuse.

There definitely are development in technology area. There are now more "start ups" than 3 years ago. But the thing is the infrastructure is pretty much broken still. The Internet is (still) slow and expensive. (A year ago, I spent the whole morning by trying to 'bundle install' and then the other half of day, the electricity is gone). So, basically, small companies are struggling to roll out their own products and from months to months, they have to make their cashflow by doing services/outsource. Also there are foreign tech companies (eg Rocket Internet) who are trying to clone their existing stuffs into the Myanmar and trying to make it work. I can say they are struggling either because our culture is different. What works in Singapore/Vietnam might not work in Myanmar.

Recently, a friend of mine company tried to get some seed funding from outside for his startup and he had to set up a lot of extra work such as opening the same name company in Singapore, get the money for the Singapore company and then bring it back with him to Myanmar. Because there are still lots of restrictions around there. Feel free to ask me anything and I could try my best to answer them.

I used Eclipsed(ADT) and now using Android Studio. Eclipse has the decent vim plugin too. It can detect your vimrc and you can use your key-bindings. Only a while ago, Ideavim has this features where you can load the config with ~/.ideavimrc . Overall, IntelliJ is nicer IDE than ADT

Lately, IMHO, Gradle in Android Development(applicable for Java development as well) is a huge improvement over managing dependencies with pom.xml(ant) and linking jar files manually. Besides, you can totally customize build.gralde too.

Wow, seeing an article about our country on the front page of HN is like a dream.

There are more and more "start-up" who are doing (or want to do) product companies Such as nexlabs.co (Disclaimer: They are my very close friends), is a good example. The lack of payment solutions are stopping us. So, my personal advice is to go global rather than focusing local. Startups incubation and accelerations by companies such as (Ideabox, Project Hub etc) are offering lots of exciting opportunities.

And please, please don't get high hopes with the new telecoms (They even are struggling). We've been told lots of "this will happen, that will happen" and in the end, nothing happened. However, this is not to discourage or demoralize people who're hoping, especially, the "faster Internet". This is very likely the only hope we have.

Another thing I'd like to address is the lack of talents. As new companies and lots of opportunities are there, there aren't much people who are capable and catching with cutting edge techs. Recently, I attended RedDotRubyConf in Sg and had a chat with some folks. I told them there are only about 3 to 5 companies who are familiar with rails (and ruby) and using it in production. Half of my day is spent by 'bundle install' and the electricity is gone for the other half. They were very surprised. This is to say, the basic infrastructure such as electricity is not there yet. The education system in Myanmar is completely broken. But we're all doing whatever we can. Personally, I've been running and trying to help with Google Developer Group Yangon, Android User Group and trying to reaching out to the universities.

You could try something like Dokku, Docker powered mini-Heroku https://github.com/progrium/dokku If I am not wrong, DigitalOcean has dokku-installed images which you can just use within a few minutes.

It's just because it's stated inside the Android Code Style Guidelines for Contributors. I see a lot of other people, especially Android developers, use that field name conventions too. That's exactly what I was trying to say. I am from Myanmar, which is pretty lagging in telecommunication area behind other countries. Only recently, people can buy the handset with very cheap price. Of course, mobile phone OS ratio of Android and iOS is like 10:1. Thanks to Huawei, anyway. I recently made an app and I am quite amazed that majority android version is 4+ and very little number of 2.3 .Thus, we aim to make more quality android app for the local.
