ykonstant··on Talking to strangers at the gym
I don't have a stake in this thread, but I am stealing "maladjusted weaklings" (≧▽≦)
ykonstant··on Newton's law of gravity passes its biggest test
Yes. Yes, it would. This is so tiring.
ykonstant··on 'Point of no return': New Orleans relocation must start now due to sea level
Damn, those poor and homeless are really living it up.
ykonstant··on City Learns Flock Accessed Cameras in Children's Gymnastics Room as a Sales Demo
Jesus Christ.
ykonstant··on Your phone is about to stop being yours
Oh yes, a very unfortunate side-effect that companies are implementing with tears in their eyes, tearing their clothes apart.
ykonstant··on The West forgot how to make things, now it’s forgetting how to code
Unnecessary emphasis can get... quite comical... indeed.
ykonstant··on Viktor Orbán Could Lose
Is that a genuine "he could lose", or "he could lose" the way Erdogan "could lose"?
ykonstant··on Claude Code's source code has been leaked via a map file in their NPM registry
Don't spread the misery?? Wow, fucking thanks.
ykonstant··on Why the US Navy won't blast the Iranians and 'open' Strait of Hormuz
I read shakes dice as a Latin term and had a good laugh. "Ah, if they bomb us, we will retaliate on Ecuador shakes dice."

>Vote for better politicians.

I cannot. I can only vote better politicians if they are there. That is without even going into the minefield of what is "better". My implication is that I have no confidence whatsoever in any current politician in my state.

> Donate money to causes that you think are important.

I have no money.

> If you think you can do it better, and this isn't meant to be facetious, run for political office.

I have no money, no visibility and no connections. Even if I was magically given tons of money, I would still need a strong network to attempt any real change, even without taking into consideration the strong networks already in place preventing it.

Telling random citizens "run for office" is facetious, whether you mean it or not.

"That's Larry; he does most of the work around here."
ykonstant··on "Roadrunner": a bipedal, wheeled robot for multi-modal locomotion [video]
I agree. I wish I could be more optimistic.
ykonstant··on Ask HN: Founders of estonian e-businesses – is it worth it?
I am sorry, but under the current circumstances in the US, your second paragraph sounds like satire, and I actually laughed out loud.
ykonstant··on The 'paperwork flood': How I drowned a bureaucrat before dinner
I have often heard this story. To my ears, inexperienced in the tech industry, but experienced in others, it sounds absurd. If a modification improves performance even in the slightest perceptible way (of course it needs to be perceptible by the user), it is the job of the sales team to hype it up to the heavens.

To me, these stories sound like a ridiculous failure of the sales team or of the executive team to communicate the change to the sales team.

ykonstant··on AI overly affirms users asking for personal advice
I got worried when I read the title, so I asked ChatGPT if I have fallen into this trap and it guaranteed I have not; that was a relief!
ykonstant··on Further human + AI + proof assistant work on Knuth's "Claude Cycles" problem
Yes, too many people here do not understand the distance between the problems the article is discussing (and LLMs have solved) and the big problems in math and CS.
ykonstant··on Why mathematicians are boycotting their biggest conference
What an utter piece of shit comment. I have had friends (research mathematicians) who were harassed at the border and you have the temerity to do the "cite your sources" shitcrap for "data" which is available with a single click of the mouse -- as the very gracious sibling comment showed, doing your work for you.
ykonstant··on Data centers are transitioning from AC to DC
Soon they will replace all the iron railings with maiden.
ykonstant··on The truth that haunts the Ramones: 'They sold more T-shirts than records'
I really enjoy their songs, and I first listened to them in my late 20s, long after the age where bands imprint on you like a baby chick.
ykonstant··on Hormuz Minesweeper – Are you tired of winning?

Ooh remmina looks really cool.

ykonstant··on Why users cannot create Issues directly
>2. The psychological impact of the "open issue count" has real consequences despite being meaningless on its own. People will see a project with 1K+ issues and think "oh this is a buggy hell hole" when 950 of those issues are untriaged, unaccepted, 3rd party issues, etc.

Fully agree with this; as a beginner in the space I get nervous when I see a project having a thousand open issues since 2018.

And based on historical trends, they are doing the clever thing. If there are enterprises today still running IBM mainframes, MS is probably right to expect that today's enterprise contracts will be paying off at least 40 years down the line -- especially when you factor in the motte of regulatory traps and labyrinthine compliance checks.
ykonstant··on Microsoft kills official way to activate Windows 11/10 without internet
Is there a way to chain launch a "qemu VM --> windows 10 client --> autodesk product" in a transparent way? If we could do that reliably and with a stripped down win10 image, I think the serious office users could just pretend they are running autodesk or whatever software in linux. The big downside I presume is this will not work with software that need tight interaction with custom hardware (mocap suits etc).
ykonstant··on Linux kernel security work

Security is not a dirty word, Blackadder.

ykonstant··on 2026 will be my year of the Linux desktop
