ygram··on Svante Pääbo awarded Nobel Prize for studies of extinct human ancestors
It is illegal to own people in Sweden, so you can't steal them.
ygram··on Mercedes and Ferrari’s edge in the electric car age: high-end axial motors
If you want to buy an EV today you are looking at months and months of waiting for the car to be produced and delivered. Sales numbers right now reflect production capacity more than demand for a specific brand or model. Tesla is ahead on production capacity.
ygram··on The layoffs at Klarna
Do people ever try to negotiate higher salary instead of health endurance from employer and then have a private one instead?
ygram··on The layoffs at Klarna
I have never understood why health ensurance is handled by the employer in the US, why don't people buy private health insurance instead? It feels insane to put yourself in that kind of dependency on your employer.
ygram··on Why Rust is a great choice for startups
It's the same for all languages, premature abstraction is a plauge in this industry.
ygram··on Ask HN: How do you stay afloat in the subscription economy?
I think the current state of things is pretty sad. I only subscribe when I use the service a lot, I would like to subscribe to more services (to avoid being the product) but they are usually priced way too high. Take worflowy for example, I use it, free tier is enough for me, I like the service but is is far from critical to me. I would pay for it but maybe 10 USD per year would be my limit. There are a lot of services like that that wants 5 USD per month or something ridiculous. I think the real problem here is the cost of payments, but I haven't researched this.
ygram··on Ask HN: How to migrate from employee to freelancer as a SW engineer?
I find it easier to get work on a short notice. But that requires a stable economic situation. Personally I don't mind going without work for a month or two, I even like it. May be stressful for the first contract though.
ygram··on Google introduces mandatory 2-Step Verification for Google Accounts
You need to own the domain in your email adress, then the email provider does not matter that much.
ygram··on Busting the 10x software engineer myth
Your coworker is better, sounds like you spend a lot of time on premature generalisation.
ygram··on Rich people do have trouble understanding what it's like to be poor
If you are injured or get sick in that situation you can fall into a hole that you never get out of.
ygram··on E-Scooters roll into New York
Well, there are plenty of companies operating in for example Stockholm, Oslo and Helsinki. Just like regular bicycles thre are more riders in the summer than in thr winter.
ygram··on Futures explained in 200 lines of Rust
Python got async/await in 2015, so not exactly new.
ygram··on Ask HN: Where do you draw the line between a co-founder and early employee?
Why does it matter?
