ygouzerh··on OpenAI Status: Multiple engines are down
Knowing all the increase in term of load that they are having these two last months, 99.53 % of uptime on three months is actually quite impressive.
ygouzerh··on Launch HN: Odigos (YC W23) – Instant distributed tracing for Kubernetes clusters
Wow congrats guys, that is a game changer ! That have the possibility of becoming a standard in some companies I worked with
ygouzerh··on What if your entire worldview was just because of near-zero interest rates?
The central banks are controlling the rates, but they don't have so many freedom in doing so then we think. They need to think about inflation projection, consumer spending, geopolitical factors,... They seems more responding to the environment than dictating the market.
ygouzerh··on Ask HN: Why isn't there something like Let's Encrypt for document signing?
Corda is a special blockchain,it's based on need-to-know basis system. It means you can host your own node, and share your data only to the peers you want.
ygouzerh··on Ask HN: Why isn't there something like Let's Encrypt for document signing?
Corda is a special blockchain where you can control with which nodes you want to share your info. In this way, you can host your own nodes, with your own documents, and share the document only with your peers, instead of sending them away in a more centralized solution like Docusign.
ygouzerh··on Ask HN: Why isn't there something like Let's Encrypt for document signing?
What do you mean by "Company title" sorry ?

Thanks for the feedback regarding the delete account option, I will transmit it.

ygouzerh··on Ask HN: Why isn't there something like Let's Encrypt for document signing?
In my company, we are building a new free product, Kentro Sign, which his a document signing based on Corda blockchain. If you want to try it, it's free (not even a free tier) and it's there : https://sign.kentro.network/ .

Feel free to give back any feedback. I am a mere DevOps Engineer, but I will forward it !

ygouzerh··on A Debugging Manifesto
I love the design ! Just for the first one, to add additional info, it's good for debugging in a day-to-day mode.

In incident mode, when there is a major prod incident, often the process is to fix quickly the bug by any work-around you can find in order to restore the service, takes some logs, and debug / fix cleanly the problem later after the incident have been fixed.

ygouzerh··on Just don’t
Yeah same ! I don't like hearing the word just, but sometimes it helps to stop over-engineering things, or to find arguments against the one saying "just"
ygouzerh··on Ask HN: Is programming a “young person's game”?
I don't know if it's scientific, but I like to refer as the 10,000 hours rules : to acquire a very good level, you need 5 years of work.

If you are 30, at 35 you will have a very good level. So there is still time. Even if you are 70, it's always time to invest in a new skill.

ygouzerh··on Writing down what I do in Obsidian
That's a very good idea to write down what you did during the day, it saved me from a bad burnout. I was working on multiple projects in parallel, and got the feeling that I was doing nothing productive on my day, but was always stressed and tired.

Writing down what you did during the day allows to see that you actually did a lot of things. I put even meeting and technical discussions with others, because it's still takes work time.

ygouzerh··on Ask HN: What is your Kubernetes nightmare?
More distributed system than Kubernetes, but quite fun : We deployed a MongoDB cluster on our Kubernetes Clusters. Our application was a having a chat feature that stored the messages into the MongoDB cluster. After some months, we realized that we got some weird issues, some messages was arriving in the wrong orders, like : 1. A : Hi ! 2. B : Bye ! See you next time ! 3. A : Great and you ? 4. B : Hello ! How are you ?

We thought it was an application issue, but it was that actually on the database side : the timestamp of each message was using the local time of the mongodb instance. And between different instances, the time was different. We realized that the Kubernetes Nodes had issues to connect to the NTP server, due to a rule in an random firewall.

When we fixed it, every other messages where in the good order

ygouzerh··on We don’t use a staging environment
It might be enough for this company, but if you are a big corporate, it's definitely not something to do. You cannot expect millions of consumers to just be ok with the fact that the mobile app is done because it's too hard to keep in sync staging and prod.

I am maintaining the infra for a big mobile app and our staging environment allowed us in the last year to have only two production incidents and they were not due to code source (networking).

I really recommend any serious business to at least try it and see by themselves the advantages

ygouzerh··on 38% of remote workers work from bed
It depends of the country. In my country-side town in Europe, I would have no issue.

Now I am in Hong-Kong, and it's really hard to find a place that have enough place for a desk in a bedroom / place in the living room, without breaking your bank account. I heard that it's the same for Singapore.

ygouzerh··on Terraform 0.15 General Availability
Thanks for the share, didn't heard about it before, I see the advantage in a use-case that we have :

We have are actually working on : "How to manage Terraform resources". We ended up having a conflict dev <-> ops where dev teams are messaging the terraform guys to create resources. For example, to create a database, it will take only 1 hour writing HCL, but 2 weeks of emails to align on the specs.

We are currently building something on top, to have resources that can be created in a self-service mode by the devs themselves. (Behind the scenes, it uses Terraform modules to generate resources that will comply with the company policies).

For the moment, it's a bunch of Jenkins pipelines. Having a CDK can actually help us a lot there. (Can plug it to a CMDB database, have a UI on top, etc)

ygouzerh··on Terraform 0.15 General Availability
We decided to go for Terraform Cloud in our company, it works really great.

You can setup a workspace per subfolder, setup to automatic planning or not at each new commit, and put a team on it.

Main features I see : store the state and take care about the durability and the encryption + can create teams + cicd pipeline + manage variables.

There is a free tier until 5 active users also, good for experimenting it / showcase the advantages to stakeholders

ygouzerh··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
Wow thanks ! It's really the perfect app that I was looking for !
ygouzerh··on Ask HN: If you could work remote where would you live?
I'd like to go nomad, let's travel! I am french, but I think that if I want to settle, I will go Taiwan : mountains, beach, city, good foods. And the life there is a mix between innovations and traditions, it's really nice.

If it's for a short term, I will go back to Philippines, the life is really sweet and enjoyable there.

ygouzerh··on A Case for a New Language
I will have a look ! Thanks you for this sharing !
ygouzerh··on A Case for a New Language
Interesting use case ! I think model driven engineering deserved to be treated better nowadays. For people against DSL, just try to play with Ecore (Eclipse) and Xtext, you will be amazed by the speed of conception, and by the powerful reusability of your model. DSL is just the tip part of the iceberg, the concept of meta-model for example is a very interesting to study.
