ygouzerh··on Replacing a $3000/mo Heroku bill with a $55/mo server
I will recommend to try GCP or Azure, the complexity is lower there! AWS is great for big corporate that needs a lot of lego pieces to do their own custom setup. At the contrario, GCP and Azure solutions are often more bundled.
ygouzerh··on Replacing a $3000/mo Heroku bill with a $55/mo server
Single server is very cheap for hobbyist.

Just something to consider if you are in a professional environment before switching your entire infra: maintenance cost is expensive. I strongly suggest to throw man-days in your cost calculation.

To prevent security vulnerabilities, the team will need to write some playbooks to auto-update regularly your machine, hoping for no breaking changes. Or instead write a pipeline for immutable OS images updates. And it often mean testing on an additional canary VM first.

Scaling up the VM from a compute point of view is not that straightforward as well, and will require depending of the provider either downtime or to migrate the entire deployments to a new instance.

Scaling from a disk size point of view, you will need to play with filesystems.

And depending on the setup you are using, you might have to manage lets encrypt, authentication and authorization, secrets vaults, etc (here at least Disco manages the SSL certs for you)

ygouzerh··on Claude Haiku 4.5
Github Copilot could help you, you can switch model from different providers on the fly (supports Anthropic, OpenAI, Grok,...)
ygouzerh··on Figure 03, our 3rd generation humanoid robot
Boston Dynamics is very good at the mechanical part of robotics. They only start recently to take a look at integrating more autonomy and long term decision making.
ygouzerh··on WASM 3.0 Completed
From what I understand, WASM is purely functional, to perform side effects, you will need a runtime like WASI to implement it
ygouzerh··on Myocardial infarction may be an infectious disease
For the Listerine part: they are referencing this study: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16373688/ that seems to show a correlation between poor oral health and sudden cardiac death, so it might help indeed, with other good oral health practices.

I never understood why Huawei is doing it. It seems like a "do it when you are young for the resume and then leave" type of things.

Only young people can support this schedule, how a company like that is expecting senior and experienced people to stay?

ygouzerh··on 996
I got this quote from a great boss, that didn't understood that here in Hong Kong, in traditional companies, employees needs to leave office only after their boss: "Boss like us are paid more, we are expected to work more, no need to wait for me". It was the only one however that thought like that
ygouzerh··on Stripe Launches L1 Blockchain: Tempo
Indeed! After, a distributed database made for financial systems, that could prevent double spending, provide immutability of the data, includes a mechanism of authentication, with some voting power distributed between a quorum of financial of institutions... it's actually exactly what Reth is.

To have deployed some blockchain layer 1 nodes, it's actually quite similar than deploying a distributed database.

Nowadays, it's actually just easier to fork geth/reth or other engine, and just deploy it. There are so many doc and tooling that can then be reused.

ygouzerh··on Vijaye Raji to become CTO of Applications with acquisition of Statsig
It seems a mix of analytics + session-replay (e.g MixPanel) and feature flags platform (e.g Growthbook)
ygouzerh··on Toronto’s network of pedestrian tunnels
In Tsim Sha Shui we have a lot of undergrounds too! I would love that it would be more full of shops like the ones in Seoul for example.
ygouzerh··on Toronto’s network of pedestrian tunnels
Indeed! It's as well quite needed here in Asia for still being able to walk even when the temperature is either too high (e.g Hong Kong) or too low (e.g Seoul in winter), without having to use cars all the time.
ygouzerh··on Jujutsu for everyone
Thanks for the explanation!

For the defense of git add and the index, I actually personally enjoy it. I discovered git add -p recently, and it's quite nice.

It's like a way to say: let's prepare a commit with only this part of the file, but not yet this one as it's not yet finished.

For example, you can git add -p only the dependencies of a package.json, push that so others have it, and continue working on the scripts part.

I use often as well the index in order to have more granular commits that follows well Conventional Commits, when I want to have a `docs:...` for the readme update and a `feat: ...` for the src change

jj looks interesting, I will take a look!

ygouzerh··on A visual introduction to big O notation
So impressive!
ygouzerh··on Databricks is raising a Series K Investment at >$100B valuation
So if I understand well, investors are not really investing for the company results, but more on the hope that people will continue to invest in the company?

In a kind of a ... ponzi pyramid?

ygouzerh··on Cursor CLI
Actually, I think where Claude Code shines, is with the VSCode Extension. It's a great mix between a CLI that could be used in a bash script for automation, as well as a coding assistant.

I haven't found however if Cursor cli provides this kind of extension

ygouzerh··on Cursor CLI
The permissions is quite well defined, by default it will ask you for your approval before every cli command that it will run
ygouzerh··on Jules, our asynchronous coding agent
It looks like there are two different entities inside Google who provides AI products.

From a professional context for example, we are using in my company both Google Workspaces and GCP.

With Google Workspaces, we have including in our subscription Gemini, Veo 3, Jules, etc. Everything is included in a subscription models, rate-limited but unlimited. The main entrypoint is gemini.google.com

However, everytime we need to use the API, then we need to use GCP. It gives us access to some more advances models like Veo3 instead of Veo3-fast, and more features. It's unlimited usage, but pay-as-you-go. The main entrypoint is GCP Vertex AI

And both teams, Google Workspaces and GCP are quite separate. They often don't know really well what the others teams provides.

ygouzerh··on Claude Opus 4.1
It seems for Opus the Max plan is almost always needed for being useful
ygouzerh··on Claude Code does our releases now
I am a DevOps Engineer, all the thing that he described in the prompt can be just done by Github Actions except the summary of the PR.

I don't condemn using LLM, but at least they could have use it in order to write better Github Actions instead.

ygouzerh··on Denmark to raise retirement age to 70
Peope are living and staying healthy for longer than they used to --> mostly impactful for middle/upper class and above. There is a correlation between life expectancy and job level/wealth: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7792745/ .

With retirement at 70, manual labours can already stop dreaming of taking a rest before dying.

ygouzerh··on LegoGPT: Generating Physically Stable and Buildable Lego
They probably have a culture of "patents".

They just won the market because historically they reused existing locking bricks concept from a company called Kiddicraft, found a way to make it more lockable... and patent it before the original company and other companies could implement it.

We can say that they became famous half fir engineering reason, and half from their legal department...

ygouzerh··on You can't git clone a team
Great idea to go to Grenoble (France). There is there a nice ecosystem of companies + grad schools + researchers, one of the birth place of IT in France.

If you are looking for the place to hire new engineers, or researchers to work on an advanced project, I would recommend it too.

ygouzerh··on Googler... ex-Googler
> It's a fact of life

I will argue the contrary. Companies with US mindset makes us think that.

Countries with social safety net have a better way of handling it. Even in the country where I am now living, Hong Kong, which is very liberal, half of the companies let you have 1 month of notice period.

ygouzerh··on Didn't realize it was this bad
Indeed! We are inventing illogical concepts like Planned Obsolescence, Guerilla Marketing and Over-Consumerism just in order to sustain a failed system that push people into poverty, even when there are enough goods and services produced for everyone already.
ygouzerh··on Didn't realize it was this bad
Everyone doesn't excel at every skills. The person needs to be great at coding + marketing + business management...

In a society, everyone should do what they are good at, and help each other. This is why we invented companies. One that is good at marketing, one good at business management, one good at coding will work together. And hire other people to come to help them...

We are going back in circle here

ygouzerh··on Helix: A Vision-Language-Action Model for Generalist Humanoid Control
So from what I understand it actually means that they were for example never trained on a video of an apple. Maybe only on a video of bread, pineapple, chocolate.

However, as it was trained using generic text data similarly to a normal LLM, it knows how an apple is supposed to look like.

Similar than a kid that never saw a banana, but his parent described it to him.

ygouzerh··on Magma: A foundation model for multimodal AI agents
The rate of progress on multimodal agents is impressive. OpenVLA was released in June 2024 and was state of the art at that time... 8 months later, on tasks like "Pick Place Hotdog Sausage" the success rate is passing from 2/10 to 6/10
ygouzerh··on Show HN: Cot: a Rust web framework for lazy developers
I just had an issue yesterday in my company where a backend keeps crashing, because a function blocking the main thread, which means that the healthcheck endpoint was not responding... Async is definitely a needs
ygouzerh··on Definancialization / Hyperfinancialization
One of the claim made here is that we are wasting time putting our money to work. I would argue the contrary. In a world where people are just putting their savings under their mattress, it's a shame.

Money is energy. Instead of let it aside "in case we need it later", it should help other people to grow, and give them an extra pair of hands.

If we don't want to waste time looking at where to invest it, then taxes to put dormant money into a sovereign fund, which in return will give out the interest in the form of social measures, is something that can be done as well.
