Why use lot word when few word do fine.
yesthisiswes··on Show HN: I built 48 lightweight SVG backgrounds you can copy/paste
These are awesome! I’d love to use some of these for my solitaire game.

Weird thing when I preview one of the backgrounds then scroll down the page on mobile the images disappear. I have to refresh the page to view all the backgrounds again after selecting one.

I wonder if you should add names for the patterns so we can pick favorites?

TIL I should never be responsible for hot swapping pumps! Great idea and execution. We need more of these types of projects to exist in the world.

It needs to be at least three times this size!
yesthisiswes··on What is the nicest thing a stranger has ever done for you?
I live in a neighborhood where every street has a cul-de-sac. Outside our neighborhood is a busy road. About 6 months ago our 100lb Great Dane escaped out the front door while we were bringing in groceries. My wife and I chased her around the neighborhood trying to get her back. We lost sight of her and she eventually ended up in the middle of that busy road. A young college aged kid saw her in the road stopped his car and chased her back into our neighborhood. We cornered her and I grabbed her collar. The guy headed back to his car after the dog was caught. I should have got the guys name. I was so angry at the dog I didn’t really know what to say to the him but I am still so thankful. It could have been a very sad day for our family without his help.

yesthisiswes··on Animals Made from 13 Circles (2016)
This is so true. I took a figure drawing class in college and we were instructed to draw with a cloth and charcoal dust. Easily some of the best work I made came out of that restriction.
yesthisiswes··on ‘Bluey’s World’: How a Cute Aussie Puppy Became a Juggernaut
The cricket episode is so good! It gets me everytime.
yesthisiswes··on How to Implement a Cosine Similarity Function in TypeScript
I liked your article. The chart with the vectors on it was cool though kinda hard to use on mobile.

I went to the typescript tag and tried to read a few other articles and got 404 errors. Just wanted to let ya know.

Nice blog and good work!

yesthisiswes··on Show HN: SQL Noir – Learn SQL by solving crimes
Awesome thanks! I’ll give the second challenge a go
yesthisiswes··on Show HN: SQL Noir – Learn SQL by solving crimes
This is cool! Great job! I completed the first challenge.

I guess I’m used to sql server management studio I tried running multiple queries at once and wasn’t able to. I also tried writing a comment with two dashes to keep track of the id’s and it replaced most of my query with dashes. It might have something to do with being on mobile on iOS.

yesthisiswes··on Show HN: SmartHome – An Adventure Game

My neighbor and I were talking a few months back and he had the same idea. He said he drove by the historical markers all the time it would be cool to know what they all said. Cool idea just sent him this app!
yesthisiswes··on Show HN: Outerbase Studio – Open-Source Database GUI
I used to love table plus. My favorite part was that you could hook a query up to a chart. Then you could have the query fetch fresh data every second to give you a live dashboard.

At the last company I worked for I made a command to ssh into our servers and extract job data. I saved the data in a local SQLite database. Then I made a dashboard in table plus to show the it in a chart that would refresh every second.

I had a real-time dashboard in about an hour once I figured out all the job info I wanted to capture. It was really cool!

yesthisiswes··on Daisy, an AI granny wasting scammers' time
My father setup his own solution for robocalls. If the phone rings more than three times it kicks the call to the fax machine. Apparently fax lines are supposed to be kept clear because of legal reasons? All I know is half the time I call I get a dialup sound as my call gets routed to the fax machine.
yesthisiswes··on Direct Sockets API in Chrome 131
Awesome demo. I’ve really missed that map it’s been too long.
yesthisiswes··on Ink: React for interactive CLI apps
This! I hit both of these issues. I tried building a solitaire game using ink. I couldn’t stack and offset the cards on top one another so they took up a lot of screen real estate. Then when I had re-renders the screen would flicker. Other than that it was a joy to use. I think I even tried flipping the solitaire board horizontal but that felt too weird.
yesthisiswes··on Show HN: I built an open-source local-first app to track my workouts
Congrats on shipping. This is a cool project!

One thing I noticed I was able to start a workout without giving it a name. Then when I got to the timer the time in the top left of my screen was a second faster than the main timer. When I clicked done it told me the time from the main timer and not the one in the top corner. I’m wondering if you need the timer in the corner at all?

I like the design I think I might try it out for my next workout.

I tried editing the bid and ask prices but wasn’t able to. I’m on mobile

yesthisiswes··on The rise of the disposable car
I had no idea they did discounts Thanks for the tip!
yesthisiswes··on The rise of the disposable car
$800 is steep.

I have a 2018 Subaru Outback. I got in a fender bender that caused the right front headlight unit to snap near the top bolt where it attached to the car. I found out when my car failed inspection.

I called the dealership and they quoted me $500 just for the headlamp. I went on rock auto and bought one for $250 and installed it. I had to take the front bumper off the car to install the headlamp. Passed inspection after I installed it though so it was all good. Just can’t believe they were marking up parts like that.

yesthisiswes··on Building the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (2014)
That’s a fair take. I normally have cruise control on. I wonder if anything will change when they add more lanes.
yesthisiswes··on Building the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (2014)
This article is excellent! I grew up on the Eastern Shore. It’s a place most people in central parts of Virginia don’t even realize exists.

I’ve been across the bridge probably close to 100 times by now. I’ve often wondered why parts of the bridge were built the way they were. For example I’ve always wanted to know why the bridge near fisherman’s island was so tall. I never realized it was for fishing boats makes total sense.

I’m glad the bridge exists and can’t wait for the new lanes to get added. I think two way traffic in the tunnels freaks people out. I always go into the tunnel cruising at 55 or 60 and come out the other side doing 45 behind the one other car in the tunnel ahead of me.

The bridge toll also changes depending on when you cross it. The weekends are more expensive by a couple of dollars. Back in the day I remember it being $12. Now it’s getting closer to $20. I wish I could pay a dollar a mile and make it constant. I think the bridge is 17 miles long.

Also side note I believe the filmed mission impossible 3 on the bridge.

All in all great read. Would have been terrifying building that bridge back in the day. Couldn’t imagine a world with out it though.

That is very helpful thanks. Did microacquire just rebrand to acquire?

That helps a lot I acquired a small project on microns but with less structure around the buying process.

Good luck with zeplo!

AppHunt https://apphunt.org

It’s a newsletter that sends out posts about interesting iOS apps every week. I bought the newsletter on microns.io in December 2022.

It’s a ghost blog / newsletter hosted on a VPS which isn’t expensive. However I’m using mail gun and that part is pricey. I’m thinking about switching to something else soon but mailgun integrates pretty easily with ghost.

I write software at work so I figured a newsletter would take me out of my comfort zone. I have to do things I don’t think I’m great at like writing and marketing. I find the deadline of putting out an issue every Monday keeps me honest.

Also I love these posts it’s fun scrolling through all the different projects!

This is really well done. I completed it on my phone. I wonder what the gap between typing on a phone and keyboard are?

Anyway awesome project!
